Maccabi Tel Aviv goalkeeper Daniel Tenenbaum kept yet another clean sheet on Monday in the goalless draw against Beitar Jerusalem at Teddy Stadium and said it was a tough encounter.
“This was not an easy game at all, it was really, really difficult. We had to work hard we didn’t win but we also didn’t want to concede a goal. Our target is to win the title and this is another step towards that aim. We work hard in training and the results are evident.”
Maccabi Tel Aviv captain Sheran Yeini delivered his verdict after the disappointing goalless draw against Beitar Jerusalem at Teddy Stadium on Monday and said the players did not perform to their best abilities.
“This is not a game that is typical of our play and I think the same can be said of Beitar Jerusalem. This was a placid encounter and we didn’t create many chances, Beitar had a few more. It’s a pity because we wanted to continue our momentum from the last two wins.”
“I think we prepared for a different game against Beitar We expected them to press us more and allow us more space but they stayed back. We tried to adjust our play but it wasn’t enough. We will learn from this game and we will be ready for the next fixtures.”
Maccabi Tel Aviv coach Vladimir Ivic was clearly disappointed with the goalless draw against Beitar Jerusalem at Teddy Stadium and said that although he had expected a difficult game against tough opponents, his own players did not perform to their usual high standards.
Maccabi Tel Aviv and Beitar Jerusalem played out a goalless draw at Teddy Stadium on Monday in a playoff phase fixture that had its moments of nearlies but in which neither team was able to find a vital moment of inspiration.
The result leaves Maccabi with a 12-point lead over Maccabi Haifa in second place, they drew 2-2 with Hapoel Haifa on Sunday, while Beitar are in third place in the upper playoffs, 20 points off the pace.
Beitar, looking composed early on, had a good chance when Levi Garcia beat two men in the area and shot at goal but Daniel Tenenbaum was his usual calm self and he blocked the shot that was then cleared by the defence.
In the 28th minute, Beitar came close when a Garcia curling free kick from 22 metres on the right beat Tenenbaum in the Maccabi goal, but the post came to his rescue and the score remained goalless.
Beitar captain Idan Vered had a decent try in the 40th minute when he sped into the area from the left and shot diagonally at Tenenbaum, but it wasn’t enough to spur the scoreboard operators into action.
The second half opened with a bit of a flourish as there was a chance at either end early on as first Dor Peretz had his powerful shot cleared parried by Itamar Nitzan in the Beitar goal and it was followed almost immediately at the other end with another Vered shot that was parried over the bar for a corner by Tenenbaum.
The game then petered out into a battle to avoid defeat, although towards the end Nick Blackman just failed to connect with the ball as he slid in at the far post after an excellent cross from the left by Yonatan Cohen.
The result means that Maccabi have set a new record against Beitar in not conceding a goal in five consecutive matches. It was the second consecutive goalless draw between the two outfits this season.
The Maccabi Tel Aviv Youth Academy convened a group of players on Monday that will be the squad to play in the under-18 age group division next season. The boys, born in 2013, who will compete in the youngest of the Academy’s three youth teams.
Following on from last week’s “Match of the Season” when Maccabi Tel Aviv beat second-placed Maccabi Haifa 2-0, Vladimir Ivic’s charges travel to Jerusalem tonight for a clash against Beitar Jerusalem at Teddy Stadium (kickoff 20:45), in a match that will complete the 29th round of league action.
With a win, Maccabi’s 12-point lead at the top of the standings will increase to 14 points. That is thanks to Maccabi Haifa drawing 2-2 with their city rivals Hapoel on Sunday. With seven matches remaining after tonight, only a very brave person would bet against Maccabi retaining their title well before the league is concluded early next month.
Beitar Jerusalem have had a far less successful return to action and drew their opening fixture after the restart 1-1 with Hapoel Beersheba. They then lost 3-0 to Hapoel Tel Aviv. Roni Levi’s men are third in the standings on 50 points, 20 points behind their rivals tonight. Hapoel Beersheba are on 47 points in fourth place, Hapoel Tel Aviv have 45 and Hapoel Haifa are on 39 points.
Unless Beitar win tonight, they will not have even a theoretical chance of winning the title, but they do want to try to consolidate their third position in the standings and give themselves the chance of gaining a place in European club play next season.
Both outfits have met twice already this season. The last clash at Teddy ended in a 4-0 win for Maccabi, in what was one of their best showings in the current campaign. That was followed by a frustrating goalless home draw that was played at Sammy Ofer Stadium.
Stats of note:
Maccabi have not conceded a goal against Beitar in their last four league meetings and if they keep a clean sheet this evening, it will be the first time ever that they have done so for five consecutive matches against Beitar.
Overall, there have been 126 league clashes between the two clubs. Maccabi have won 51 times, 37 have ended in draws and Beitar have won 38. The goal difference is 178-133 in favour of Maccabi.
Beitar have the slightly better record when hosting Maccabi, who have won 22 times against Jerusalem, draws have been recorded 18 times and there have been 25 wins for Beitar. The goal difference is marginally in Maccabi’s favour at 70-68.

Beitar have hosted Maccabi three times in the past behind closed doors because of disciplinary issues and that does not bode well for the visitors, who have not won any of those three fixtures, losing twice and drawing once.
Maccabi’s 4-0 win this season was also Beitar’s biggest loss in the current campaign, and their biggest-ever defeat in Jerusalem, alongside the 5-1 defeat at the hands of Bnei Yehuda last season.
The clubs have met in the playoff phase 13 times before, 11 in the upper section and twice in the lower section and the record is seven wins for Maccabi, two draws, and four wins for Beitar.
Maccabi Tel Aviv will play their third TASE Premier League match in the playoff phase on Monday, and after two victories at home, they will play in Jerusalem against Beitar in the 29th round of action. Maccabi have a 12-point lead at the top of the standings and eight matches remain. All Maccabi’s rivals have continued to falter in their effort to keep up with the pacesetters but coach Vladimir Ivic is not taking matters lightly and is preparing his players for a tough encounter.
Maccabi Tel Aviv forward Matan Hozez is in red hot form as he and his teammates prepare to take on Beitar Jerusalem in the third TASE Premier League match in the playoff phase at Teddy Stadium on Monday (kickoff 20:45).
“I had a positive outlook during the lockdown and I looked after myself. I knew we would be back in action, although I didn’t know when,” he said.
“I am pleased that I have been able to show my worth and I told my family that even though I couldn’t be sure that I would play, I will be with Maccabi all the way to the end. I believe in myself and the hard work has paid off, it is very satisfying when you succeed, but I want to show more and continue to shine.”
“Beitar will be tough and I’m sure it will be an interesting game, but we want the three points and we are looking only to win.
