The Maccabi Tel Aviv “Avi Cohen” Youth Academy began training sessions today for the 2018/19 season as the Under-21 side Maccabi “Shachar” Tel Aviv was the first team to start preparations for the upcoming campaign. Head Coach Guy Tzarfati, assistant coach Nissim Dvash and new goalkeeping coach Shura Uvarov were all on hand as the squad will head to their training camp in Bulgaria next Monday.
The Under-21 team who won the league title last season, will be comprised of veterans from that squad along with players from the Under-17 side who also won their respective league championship. The session was attended by Performance Director Patrick van Leeuwen, together with assistants Raymond Atteveld and Robin Verheul. Head Coach Guy Tzarfati who is entering his third season with the team led today’s session and spoke about his feelings as the new campaign begins: “It’s great to get back to the Penguin Pickup Training Ground at Kiryat Shalom to see the guys and the staff. Today is the start of our journey to put together a team that will battle and that’s also intelligent on the pitch. Of course, the goal is to put an emphasis on developing the players and prepare them to make it to the next level, the first team.”
The Maccabi Tel Aviv “Avi Cohen” Youth Academy has a wide range of departments whose goal is to promote and streamline the development of young players. Just before the Academy teams open up training, the staff is already preparing for the upcoming season. Let’s meet the medical and sport science departments whose responsibilities include the continuous evolvement as per the philosophy of Performance Director Patrick van Leeuwen.
Medical Department
The Youth Academy Medical Department staff aims to give optimal attention to each and every player that requires it, from health, rehabilitation, anthropometric monitoring and medical-sport education whether they are in the South or North Branches or if they are players on the Under-19 or Under-10 or any other team at Maccabi.
As far as the staff is concerned there is no difference between players and they will do their utmost to get them back on the pitch if injured. The Club has given the coaches and players a mandate that training sessions must be as close as possible to match conditions as the role of the department is to make sure that injured or ill players return to action as strong and as healthy as possible in order to minimize the risk of future injuries.

Sport Science Department
The Sport Science Department features five fitness trainers and four analysts, who are in essence the operational arm of the department. The staff analyzes everything that happens on the pitch by using a variety of technologies such as GPS and video. They also gather information that is put into a database in order to keep track of the content that has been used in each training session. The ultimate goal is to give the coaches guidelines so they can properly plan training sessions, to analyze what they are doing via the bigger picture, when to do certain sessions during the week and on which day, all the way to analyzing methodology, sets, rest times and conditions.
In addition, there is a staff that helps manage video analysis. The staff films both matches and training sessions in order to build individual or team video clips according to the philosophy of Performance Director Patrick van Leeuwen. The goal is to provide the coaches with material and video information for group or individual meetings. The video is also used to test match play according to the predefined specifications which can analyze both quantitatively and qualitatively what occurred during the game itself. This will allow the ability to give both positive and negative feedback in order to make corrections where needed.

Maccabi Tel Aviv wil make their way back to Israel this morning from Hungary after a 1:1 draw at Ferencvaros in first leg first round Europa League qualifying,
Maccabi Tel Aviv opened up the 2018/19 campaign with their first official match of the season under new Head Coach Vladan Ivic which ended in a dramatic 1:1 draw at Ferencvaros in the first leg of first round Europa League qualifying action. Eliran Atar provided the Yellow & Blue with the valuable away goal in the 91’ as Maccabi will look to advance next week back in Israel in the return leg next Thursday.

“This was the first half of the game and we finished 1:1. The second half will be in Israel next week. We came here to win the game but this was a good result over the first 90 minutes.”
The Coach continued: “We pressed from the start and we had a number of good chances. After we gave up the goal we pressured our opponent even more and we created more chances near the end of the game. Fortunately we scored in the last few minutes.”

“This is not our final squad, but the players we have now put us in a good position and we will work hard towards the upcoming match.”

“I try to play the game with the players at my disposal and I will see what the best system will be for us. This was the first game away and we played with the two strikers. We will see in the future what will be best for us.”

“There was a good atmosphere, but I hope that our fans will come to the match next week and create the best atmosphere possible.”
Opening up the European Campaign: The Yellow & Blue drew 1:1 at Ferencvaros in Budapest in the first leg of first round Europa League qualifying. Stefan Spirovski gave the host’s the lead in the 61’ but a 91’ strike by Eliran Atar in added time gave Maccabi Tel Aviv the equalizer and a valuable away goal as Vladan Ivic’s squad will look to advance to the second round next Thursday, July 19th at the Netanya Stadium (20:00) when they host the Hungarian outfit for the second leg.

Head Coach Vladan Ivic’s Starting XI included keeper Predrag Rajikovic, Eli Dasa, Eitan Tibi, Jair Amador, Enric Saborit, Dor Peretz, Eyal Golasa, Avi Rikan, Dor Micha (C), Aaron Schoenfeld, Vidar Kjartansson.
Available on the bench were keeper Haviv Ohayon, Eliran Atar, Omer Atzili, Sheran Yeini, Dan Glazer, Roslan Barsky, Shachar Piven.
First Half
The match began with fast paced action by both sides as the host’s had the first chance in the 7’ of the contest when Varga crossed a dangerous ball into the box, but Saborit cleared it for a corner. Rikan had Maccabi’s opening opportunity in the 11’ as his scorcher from outside of the area went over the goal while ten minutes later, Varga received the ball just to the right of the goal, but his shot missed the target.
In the 22’ Rikan fed Vidar the ball in the box, but his chance went wide left of the goal and 12 minutes later Rikan’s attempt from just above the box missed the target to the left. Golasa was issued a yellow card in the 36’ for a reckless tackle on Botka while two minutes later a give and go between Golasa and Micha resulted in a chance by the former, but his long distance attempt didn’t threaten the Ferencvaros goal.
Dasa sent Schoenfeld the ball in the box in the 45’ as the striker tried a half bicycle kick but the keeper was in place to make the save while at the other side of the pitch, Rajikovic was up to the task as he collected Varga’s opportunity just ahead of the break. Second Half
A free kick in the 50’ found Lanzafame’s head in the box but his attempt was caught by Rajikovic while at the other end, Vidar’s free kick went into the Ferencvaros wall, Dasa’s corner was headed out by Peretz and Rikan’s ball via a hard working Schoenfeld went wide of the goal as Maccabi poured on the pressure.
Dasa’s 57’ corner was headed by Amador into the waiting hands of the Ferencvaros keeper Dibusz but as the Yellow & Blue continued to press it would be the host’s who would take a 1:0 lead in the 61’. Varga’s free kick made its way into the Maccabi box where Stefan Spirovski found the back of the goal to the delight of the locals.
Kjartansson’s 63’ opportunity was taken care of by Dibusz and one minute later Ivic made his first substitute introducing Eliran Atar in favor of Golasa. In the 74’ Atar’s attempt from the top of the box was stopped Dibusz while Peretz’s header off a Dasa conner went over the bar and out as Maccabi looked for the equalizer. In the 79’ Omer Atzili came on for Vidar Kjartansson as Maccabi made their send substitution of the match. Four minutes later, Atar stole the ball in the midfield and passed it to Atzili, but his chance went out while in the 85’ Sheran Yeini entered the match for Rikan.
In the 88’ Dasa made his way into the box, handed the ball off to Schoenfeld who left it for Micha, but his chance went out as Macabi looked for the tying goal which would come in the 91’ off a tremendous shot from Atar outside of the box to draw the Yellow & Blue even 1:1 as the match came to an end following 4 minutes of injury time. Maccabi Tel Aviv will look to advance to the second round as they play the second leg of their two legged tie against Ferencvaros at the Netanya Stadium next Thursday night, July 19 at 20:00.
While Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ferencvaros were preparing for the first leg of their Europa League qualifying match, a ceremony took place at the Groupama Arena honoring former Hungarian footballer and Ferencvaros coach Istvan “Potya” Toth who saved many Jewish lives during the Holocaust.
The ceremony was attended by the Owner’s Representative Jack Angelides, Club CEO Ben Mansford along with Barak Itzhaki and Moran Meiri who were invited by the World Jewish Congress and the Federation of Jewish Communities in Hungary. Mansford presented the new 2018/19 kit to the organizers of the ceremony as well.
István “Potya” Toth was not only a legendary figure of Hungarian football history, but also a righteous hero. He became a member of the Hungarian anti-fascist resistance following Germany’s invasion of Hungary, helping several hundred people escape from Nazi custody and death. He was arrested by the Gestapo in late 1944 and executed in February 1945.
As the Maccabi Tel Aviv players were putting the final touches on their preparations for this evening’s match against Ferencvaros in Hungary, a surprise visitor in Serbian midfielder Nikola Mitrovic paid a visit to his former club.
Mitro, who came to Budapest from Serbia was given a warm welcome by the team and gave them support ahead of the first round Europa League qualifying match. WATCH:

Adar Kamiel: “I’m a Maccabi fan since the age of five and now I’m 29 years old. I’ve been a season ticket holder since I was 12 and of course I renewed my tickets for this seasons as well. The last time I traveled to Europe to see Maccabi play was the match in Alkmaar.”
Ron Ashrov: “I’m really looking forward to the new season. It’s really exciting and I love the new Kit. We have a new coach, new players and I think it will be really great. Football is coming home”
Kamiel: “We came to Budapest from Saint Petersburg after attending the Belgium and France World Cup semifinal. Prior to that we were in Saransk, Moscow, Samara and Kazan. We went back and forth from Samara and Kazan a number of times and now we are here. This trip came about when we were on the bus in Samara and we started thinking about how much a ticket to Budapest would be and if we could make the trip.”
Ashrov: “I love Maccabi and animals so when I saw the penguin on the shirt with the stripes I thought it was amazing, I knew I had to have one.”
Kamiel: “It would be really exciting to meet Raijko (Predrag Rajikovic) and we waited for him after the match against Brazil but we missed him.”
SURPRISE! Raijko: ”I have a gift for you guys as an apology. One Kit for each of you.”
Ashrov: “The penguin is awesome, it’s the best part of the shirt. There’s no question that the penguin will help bring us the title. It’s the best good luck charm.”
Kamiel: “It’s fantastic to be in Budapest for the match with the new Kit and especially with the penguin. I hope that this is just the start to a great season.”
European competition is upon us. Maccabi Tel Aviv will begin their Europa League campaign this evening (20:00 Israel time) in a first round qualifying tie at Ferencvaros in Budapest, Hungary as the Yellow & Blue will look to advance to the group stages of continental play for the fourth straight season.

This will be the Yellow & Blue’s first official match under new Head Coach Vladan Ivic and the new recruits Itay Shechter, Jair Amador and Enric Saborit will all look to make their debut for the Club. Also with Maccabi in Hungary are players who returned from loan including Dan Glazer, Matan Hozez and Shachar Fiban while Haviv Ohayon will be the second choice keeper for the contest.
Last night, the Club held the final training session at the Groupama Arena, which is considered to be a very homey stadium for Ferencvaros. “We are very excited about the first match of the season,” acknowledged Dor Micha. “We studied our rival very well and they are a tough opponent. We hope that we can continue our European tradition.” The midfielder also spoke about his feelings ahead of the match: “We feel good and we are optimistic as always. We are coming into the match extremely well prepared and ready to go. Our goal is to leave Hungary with a victory.”
Head Coach Vladan Ivic also spoke about the Club’s Budapest based opponent: “This is the first game of the season for both clubs. Maccabi is the biggest club in Israel and Ferencváros is the biggest club in Hungary. There are no favorites in a game like this.”
Avi Rikan added: “We had plenty of time to get ready for the match by playing a number of friendlies. The new players have adapted very well. The professional staff did a good job and we are coming into the game ready to go.”
Fast Facts:
Five years ago, Maccabi faced their first Hungarian foe in European competition when they played Gyori in the second round of Champions League qualifying. The Yellow & Blue won the opening leg 2:0 to begin a memorable continental campaign under Head Coach Paulo Sousa.
Should he play, Eitan Tibi will record his 53rd European appearance, Maccabi’s all-time leader in continental play.
Marcel Heister, who played for Beitar Jerusalem the last couple of season joined Ferencvaros this summer.
