Eran Zahavi’s scored his 19th league goal this season to cancel Ashdod’s earlier lead but that wasn’t enough to help Maccabi collect three points after being held to a 1-1 draw at Bloomfield.

The 35-year-old skipper on the night, who had a goal disallowed in controversial circumstances before uncharacteristically missing several chances, faced the TV cameras at the end of the match and admitted: “I take full responsibility for the chances I missed today as we were unable to win the match. I feel that the first goal I scored shouldn’t have been disallowed.

I saw all the possible angles and for me I was onside. There are little things in a game which change the momentum – such as decisions like that one. From what I was told, VAR is allowed to intervene only if there is a 100% clear cut mistake, and I didn’t see anything to persuade me there was one”.

To sum up a disappointing night, Zahavi concluded: “There was only one team on the pitch here today. Ashdod didn’t create any chances and on the other hand we had plenty. We are still unbeaten in the Playoffs and will keep on trying to do our best until the end of the season.”
