Barsky: “I feel that I am moving forward and improving at Maccabi”

Ruslan Barsky, Maccabi Tel Aviv’s midfielder looked ahead to Monday night’s contest at Hapoel Hadera (21:00) at the Netanya Stadium:

“I don’t believe that this will be an easy match. They are a strong club especially at home and we are preparing accordingly. We are expecting a tough match. We are going to press high up and we want the 3 points and that’s what is important to us.”

About being part of the club:
“There was no question that from the first moment that I arrived here that I was going to enjoy both the professional side and the friendship amongst the team. I feel like I am moving forward and improving. The friendship that is here within the club is what is helping us win games.”

Looking to succeed:
“We are focusing on ourselves and we have an excellent coach who prepares us well and makes sure that we are hungry to succeed.”

Ivic: “I’m sure the players will be ready to give 100%”

Vladimir Ivic, the Maccabi Tel Aviv Head Coach spoke ahead of his squad’s Israel Premier League Ligat Japanika Matchday 20 clash at Hapoel Hadera on Monday night (21:00) at the Netanya Stadium:

“Hadera is a club that just was promoted from the 2nd division and they have a good coach and we have to be focused. We are prepared and know what to expect. We will work hard to achieve the 3 points and will fight from the first to the last second.”

Giving 100% for the win:
“This will be an away match at the same stadium that we play in and our goal is to win just as it is every match. I hope our fans will be with us tomorrow. I’m sure the players will be ready to give 100% in order to take the win.”

The last contest against Hadera:
“I’m not looking at the result (4:0 Maccabi) from the last match. For us the most important thing is to win continue to improve from match to match.”

Working hard:
“We have been working hard from the first day. We have rules that we will keep to ourselves until the end of the season and this is the way to build and grow a team and players. We have been improving from match to match as this is something that must continue until the end of the season.”

Giving 100% for the team:
“The players are professional with good character and good teamwork. They have shown this time and time again and I’m sure they will continue that way. Work hard, be part of the team and give 100% for the team.”

About the young players:
“To understand what one young player can do you need to give him a chance and not just one chance.”

The U19 International Winter Tournament that Maccabi Tel Aviv hosted at the PenguinPickUp Training Ground at Kiryat Shalom was again a smashing success as Maccabi “Shachar” were the winners of the competition for the second year in a row. Club CEO Ben Mansford and Performance Director Patrick van Leeuwen summed up the tournament and also spoke about the organization and support of the Academy.

Maccabi “Shachar” Tel Aviv crowned U19 International Winter Tournament Champions

After three wonderful days of football, Maccabi Tel Aviv’s U19 International Winter Tournament came to an end of Saturday as Maccabi “Shachar” Tel Aviv raises the trophy for the second year in the row as champions of the competition. Guy Tzarfati’s side finished in first place in the group of 6 teams after defeating Crystal Palace (1:0) and S.B.V. Excelsior Rotterdam (3:1) handing them the title.

Maccabi “Shachar” Tel Aviv won the U19 International Winter Tournament for the second straight year at the PenguinPickUp Training Ground at Kiryat Shalom thanks to a pair of victories on the final day of the of the competition.

Eden Kartzev scored the lone goal of the contest in the first half. Eduardo Guerrero pressed the English keeper as Mufleh Shalata stole the ball and sent it to Kartzev who found the back of the goal for the eventual winner.

In the day’s second match, Maccabi “Shachar” made sure to end the tournament on a high note by defeating the Dutch club 3:1 to win the competition for the second year in a row.


Maccabi opened the match well and scored in the 9’ when Rave Assayag took advantage of a poor clearing attempt and sent the ball to Bar Cohen who beat the keeper. However, Excelsior drew even before the break at Nelson Bashir scored against the Yellow & Blue keeper, 1:1.

Although a draw would have been enough for Maccabi to win the tourney, Eyal Hen scored in the 43’ from a 16 meter free kick after it hit the Dutch wall and went into the goal. Assayag then completed a brace thanks to an assist by Bar Cohen off a free kick as the former beat the Excelsior keeper to give Maccabi a 3:1 win.

This week in History: Polukarov’s Derby

Maccabi Tel Aviv met Hapoel Tel Aviv on January 22, 1994 at Ramat Gan Stadium in the midst of the 1993/94 season. Long before Carlos Garcia decided a 2015/16 Derby, legendary central defender Alexander Polukarov scored for the Yellow & Blue and turned into a Maccabi hero.

One of the greatest foreign central defenders to arrive in Israel landed in the summer of 1991 after playing 11 seasons for Torpedo Moscow in Russia. Polukarov came together with Shura Uvarov as many foreign players began arriving from the former Soviet Union. Polukarov’s first match for Maccabi in the 1991/92 season is one that the defender would prefer to forget as he was issued a red card and his club gave up a pair of goals as they fell 3:2 to Beitar Tel Aviv. The rest of the campaign was much better as Polukarov was a fixture in the starting lineup as he shored up the Maccabi defense.

Polukarov’s fine play helped Maccabi win the 1991/92 league championship for their first league title in 13 years. The next season saw the defender play with Maccabi Tel Aviv in their first European match and appeared in 49 contests across all competitions as the club finished in second place while winning the Toto Cup. His first goal came in a 2:1 away victory over Hapoel Beer Sheva in December of 1992 and then scored another two in league play.

In Polukarov’s third season in Yellow & Blue, the defender had a couple of highlights on the offensive side of the ball. Other than his Derby goal, Polukarov scored one of the goals in the 3:3 semifinal State Cup draw against Tzafririm Holon in a match that Maccabi advanced in penalties. In the final, Polukarov met Hapoel Tel Aviv and once again had the upper hand in Maccabi’s victory to pick up his 3rd title in as many seasons.

Winter Tournament: Maccabi “Shachar” Tel Aviv defeats Beer Sheva 3:0

Yesterday, Maccabi “Shachar” Tel Aviv won their first match of the U19 International Winter Tournament when they defeated Beitar Jerusalem 2:1 in the competition’s opening contest. Today, Friday, Day Two go underway with another Yellow & Blue victory as Guy Tzarfati’s squad blanked Hapoel Beer Sheva 3:0. The match began well for the host’s as Maccabi took a 1:0 lead ten minutes into the clash when Omri Ram sent a cross from the right of the box to Rave Assayag who out the back home.

Maccabi doubled their lead when Tamir Glezer passed the ball to Gil Ben Shalosh who sent it into the right corner of the goal for a 2:0 advantage as the Yellow & Blue controlled the pace of play for the majority of the half.

Beer Sheva played more aggressively in the second half and had a number of chances including one that was just headed over the bar. However, Maccabi scored yet again this time thanks to Eyal Hen who elegantly beat the Beer Sheva keeper on a one on one situation to give the U19’s a 3:0 win for their second of the tourney.

Maccabi Foundation and Lone Soldier Tu B’Shvat event

One of the important missions of the Maccabi Tel Aviv FC Foundation is to help support Lone Soldiers in Israel. The Maccabi Foundation in conjunction with the Lone Soldier Center in Memory of Michael Levin helps this sector of the population over the course of the season and last evening in honor of Tu B’Shvat a special celebratory event was held for the Lone Soldiers at their center in Beit Jabotinsky, Tel Aviv. Yellow & Blue player keeper Daniel Tenenbaum attended and spoke with the soldiers.

Pizza Prego, one of the Club’s sponsors were very involved in the special event and pampered the soldiers over the course of the evening.

Again this season, the Maccabi Foundation will be working with The Lone Soldier Center in Memory of Michael Levin which was established by a group of former lone soldiers who were aware of the challenges and struggles faced by those lone soldiers serving in the IDF.
The Foundation Goals for the upcoming season include providing support for the lone soldiers while in the army through the Maccabi fans and sponsors and accompanying the lone soldiers following their service through mentoring programs, academic studies and employment opportunities.
