“We’ll keep working on what needs to be fixed”

The morning after the 5:1 victory over Maltese side Hibernians, Maccabi Tel Aviv players gave their final thoughts on the two games and on the upcoming third round of UEFA Champions League qualifying matches against Viktoria Plzen in less than a week.

Eran Zahavi who played for the first time this year and scored a pair of goals was very happy: "We advanced and did it at home but we shouldn't forget that this was only our second official match of the year and as time goes by we will look even better. I love being on the pitch especially when we win. This was my first official game as captain of the club and it's my job to help out the players on the team and I'm happy that I did so."

Yuval Shpungin who grew up in the Maccabi youth system was also in the starting lineup for the 5:1 victory over Hibernians and he discussed the pair of games, his personal feelings and the match next Tuesday: "This was not an easy game. We came into the match with a bad result from last week in Malta which put us at a disadvantage. At the end of the day we did what we needed to at Bloomfield to advance to the next round. All of the players would like to be in the starting lineup and give as much as they can to the team and I'm happy I was able to do so. Any time that I'll be playing I will give my best. It's a new year with a new coach and we are all starting from zero. I'm doing everything that I can to show the coach that I belong on the pitch."

The defender continued saying: "It's only the beginning of the year and we will have to keep improving. I'm happy that we moved on, we will look at what we need to work on and move forward to the next set of matches. I'm not going to get involved in if we should bring in new players or not. This team won a Treble last season and we have to do the best that we can. I always do what I can to help the club and of course it helped that I can play next to central

defender Tal Ben Haim with whom I've played with on the Israel National Team. It's no question that Bloomfield is a huge help to us as it gives us a lot of energy and I'm happy that we won the match and made all of our supporters happy."

Next week's match against Viktoria Plzen won't be easy and Shpungin knows that there is a lot of hard work ahead for the squad. "I don't know what formation we will use against Plzen and that's the job of the coaching staff to decide. We will do our best to stop them. Last year we played with four defenders so this of course is something we are comfortable with. We're very optimistic, we believe in ourselves and we'll keep working on what needs to be fixed."

BEN CHAIM: “Plzen is a very good club”

The morning after the 5:1 victory over Maltese side Hibernians, Maccabi Tel Aviv players gave their final thoughts on the two games and on the upcoming third round of UEFA Champions League qualifying matches against Viktoria Plzen in less than a week. Winger Tal Ben Chaim summed up his play last night as he scored a goal and drew a penalty at Bloomfield Stadium:

"It was fun to come back and play at Bloomfield after the break. The fans and the atmosphere really helped us during the tough minutes we had during the match and the supporters had a big part in helping us advance. We're happy that we were able to do so. This is my third year with the club and we have a terrific team and play especially well at Bloomfield. Hopefully, we will be able to do the same away from home."

Ben Chaim also talked about the thought that Hibernians were a weak club: "They may have been from Malta but they surprised us for the good. They are an excellent team with players that could easily play in the Israeli league. It's not right to say that the gap is very big between us and them. However, we were embarrassed last week by a team that we should have never lost too. Yesterday we saw how important it is for us to go far in Europe. It wasn't easy but we achieved our goal."

Viktoria Plzen, the club that Maccabi will have to face next week at Bloomfield Stadium is very familiar to Ben Chaim: "I played against Plzen in the past and they are a very good club that plays together as a team without any stars. We'll have to work very hard in order to get a good result that will help us when we play away the following week in the Czech Republic."

Head Coach Slavisa Jokanovic discusses Maccabi’s Win

Maccabi Tel Aviv advanced to the the third round of UEFA Champions League Qualifying after defeating Hibernians of Malta 5:1. Head Coach Slavisa Jokanovic spoke about his first win at Bloomfield Stadium:

"We did it, but we will have to improve on our performance. In general I'm happy with how the players did against Hibernians. We came to the match a bit nervous after the mistakes we made last game, but we made some changes that gave the players more confidence and what we saw was a team that was totally confident tonight on the pitch.

I'm only here four weeks now and before I came everyone talked about the future of the club and Maccabi's dreams of making it to the Champions or Europa League. There are a few areas that we would like to strengthen and there are players that we have targeted in those positions. European competition is difficult and we will have to hurry as we only have a week to get ready."

Ben Haim:”We did a decent job today”

Maccabi Tel Aviv advanced to the the third round of UEFA Champions League Qualifying Matches after defeating Hibernians of Malta 5:1. Veteran defender Tal Ben Haim made his Bloomfield Stadium return and discussed the victory.

"We did a decent job today but we will still have to improve going forward. However, we advanced and that's what is important right now. When we lost 1:2 away at Hibernians it definitely put the pressure on us at home but I don't think that this club is as weak as people thought they were.

When you play away and we didn't know that much about the Maltese side it was difficult because they played with a lot of passion. When you play at home it's a different story but we didn't have any room for mistakes. They have a number of good players and we're happy that we accomplished what we set out to do. Remember we are still getting into match shape and that this was only our second official match. Next game you'll see an even better team."

Ben Haim also talked about Maccabi's upcoming opponent Viktoria Plzen.

"We've heard about Viktoria Plzen but we don't know much about them. Our total focus was on defeating Hibernians and on nothing else. Now we will have to get ready and prepare for the next set of matches. This week we will begin to learn about the club and come to the game next week completely focussed."

Peretz: “We can’t wait for the match to begin”

In just a few hours it's going to happen! Maccabi Tel Aviv will play the second-leg of the UEFA Champions League second round qualifying matches against Hibernians FC from Malta at Bloomfield Stadium where European football will take place for the first time in a year-and-a-half. This will be an especially emotional moment for Dor Peretz who will be making his Bloomfield Stadium European debut. The young defender spoke to the club's Official Website on Matchday to share his feelings:

"This will be my first European match at Bloomfield and it will be a very personal and emotional moment for me. This will be a very interesting game and one that won't be easy, but we're prepared for it and I am looking forward to the opportunity. We worked very hard for the last match and that's how we got ready for this one. Because we are down 1:2 we are going to have to be even more focused on the task at hand and that's how we are going to approach today's game."

Peretz also spoke about the support that the Yellow-and-Blue will have at Bloomfield Stadium in European play for the first time in a year-and-a-half: "If we do our best on the pitch and the supporters do their best in the stands, then the results will speak for themselves. We feel good, practiced well and worked very hard to get ready. We've prepared very seriously and we can't wait for the match to begin."

Many feel that Hibernians FC will be coming to play for a result at Bloomfield. Peretz didn't want to comment on the opponent: "We aren't looking at them but focusing on ourselves. We believe that if we play the best that we can the result will depend only on us."

Returning Home. We’ve Missed You/ MK Tzachi Hanegbi

Just prior to the return of European matches to Bloomfield Stadium, MK Tzachi Hanegbi recalls his first game at the Jaffa stadium, the promises he made and the excitement of the upcoming first official home match of the season

 Returning Home. We've Missed You.

I remember my first match at Bloomfield Stadium, and of course in was a Tel Aviv derby. It may have been over 45 years ago but the memories are still vivid in my mind like it was only yesterday.

On that day, the Maccabi 'keeper Haim Levine was very brave and promised a victory over our rivals and I myself made two promises; eternal love for the club and to one day wear the National Team 'keeper's jersey. For now, I've been able or keep one of those promises, however if you count the 27 years in a row that I've been the Knesset team's 'keeper then I've kept both!

During the summer of 2014, Hamas rockets prevented Maccabi from playing their Champions League Qualifying matches at home, however today, the sky's the limit as we return home to Bloomfield once again.

Just like when we played Bayern Munich in a game that was decided on a second half penalty; the unforgettable victory over the stunned Ajax; the draw against the great Juventus; or the dramatic matches against Basel, PSG, Frankfurt and Bordeaux. Tonight hopefully we'll experience another historic match for the ages!

This pitch has seen many trophies and championships including the Treble from just last season, but tonight we have to cheer on our 11 warriors with all of our heart and soul.

The thousands of supporters that dream of Europe deserve this! Good luck!

This is an opinion column written by MK Tzachi Hanegbi of the Likud Party, Chairman of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee and Chairman of the Coalition. Hanegbi has been a supporter and season ticket holder of the club for many years.

“Tomorrow at Bloomfield it will be totally different”

Maccabi Tel Aviv captain Eran Zahavi spoke to the media about the upcoming UEFA Champions League second-leg, second round qualifying match tomorrow night at Bloomfield Stadium

"It's a huge honor to be the Maccabi Tel Aviv captain as the club believes in me both from a professional standpoint but also as a leader. Last match in Malta was not a good game from many different aspects and we have to look forward to the upcoming match and continue to advance in Europe, that's the main goal for all of us right now. During training camp I had a regular type of injury and it got a bit aggravated, but most importantly I'll be able to play tomorrow and lead the team onto the pitch.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yYKzVKzD3gg

Everyone likes to talk about last season, but what was last year, was, and we have to put the past aside. We have to look forward to the next game because every day in football is a new day. This is our chance to play in Europe and we have to grab this opportunity and achieve that goal. Tomorrow is an important match that we haven't even played yet, so everyone from the players to the media to the supporters need to relax and wait to see us on the pitch."

2

Zahavi also talked about his position, other expectations for the upcoming match and for the season that lies ahead: "I'm not sure what position I'll be playing for this coming season even though playing as a false #9 worked well last year as I enjoyed it, but we will see what will be for this season. I know that I am an important player on Maccabi and can play a number of roles.

However, right now I am focusing on the upcoming match and nothing more. There are a lot of very good teams in the Champions League and it will be a very hard task to advance. We need to realize that the Israeli league is the most important competition for us because if we don't win the league there won't be any opportunity to make it to the Champions League."

The captain also discussed the current team: "It was very important to keep our squad together for this year. In fact that is one of the biggest things we have as we are the best team in Israel. We didn't bring any new players in January because the club didn't feel that there were any better players available than what we already had. If a player comes to the team and can be a huge help, that's great, but that's Jordi Cruyff's role. Gili Vermouth continues to be a very important part of our club and we have to give him time to continue to adjust and everything will be ok.

Tomorrow night at Bloomfield Stadium the situation will be totally different as we will have our supporters behind us and that is something we have all been waiting for, a chance to play a European match at home once again."
