Maccabi Tel Aviv got off to a great start in their first match of their 2016/17 Europa League campaign taking a 3:0 lead thanks to a brace by Haris Medunjanin and a single marker by Vidar Kjartansson over Russian outfit Zenit St. Petersburg. However, four unanswered goals by the visitors dampened the excitement as the Yellow & Blue fell 4:3 in a shocking defeat. Matchday 2 saw Maccabi travel to Ireland for a date with Dundalk where they fell 1:0, but a 2:1 Matchday 3 win at AZ Alkmaar in Holland on goals by Oscar Scarione and Eyal Golasa gave the Yellow & Blue their first points of the group stages. The return date with AZ on Matchday 4 in Israel ended in a goalless draw while Matchday 5 saw Maccabi fall in Russia 2:0 to Zenit. The Yellow & Blue won their final game of the group stages with a 2:1 victory over Dundalk at the Netanya Stadium on goals by Tal Ben Chaim and Dor Micha as the Club finished in third place with 7 points.
