Maccabi Tel Aviv visited Prague on Matchday 1 of the Europa League Group Stages and fell 1:0 on a Tomas Necid 12′ goal. The Yellow & Blue’s first home match of the campaign saw Spanish powerhouse Villarreal pay a visit to Israel and after a valiant effort by Jordi Cruyff’s squad, Maccabi picked up their first point thanks to a goalless draw on Matchday 2. A trip to Kazakhstan for a date with Astana was up next and Maccabi had a very tough time on the stadium’s slick synthetic pitch and fell 4:0. The return contest on Matchday 4 was up next and Maccabi played Astana very tight but came up short, falling 1:0 at the Netanya Stadium. Slavia Prague then came to Israel and defeated the Yellow & Blue thanks to a Josef Husbauer brace on Matchday 5 as Maccabi still looked for their first win which would finally come at Villarreal when Nick Blackman scored a 60′ strike to give Maccabi 3 points and the victory to end their campaign on a high note.
