Open Day at the Maccabi Tel Aviv Youth Academy

On Sunday September 2nd, the Maccabi Tel Aviv “Avi Cohen” Youth Academy will hold open an training day for both male and female players and goalkeepers from across the country. The program will take place at the University Facility (Klatskin Street 1, Tel Aviv) The special day will feature training sessions, games as the professional staff will see which players will impress and those who do will be invited for trials with the various teams in the Academy.

To register for the open training day please fill in the information requested below and email it to: relias@mtafc.com

The professional staff will also take part in this special day as the coaches from the youth department teams including the Performance Director Patrick van Leeuwen and the Academy’s scouts.

Players who impress the staff will be invited to the Academy for trials to see if they can join one of Maccabi Tel Aviv’s youth department teams. The day is open to both male and female players and goalkeepers – amateurs and professionals are welcome to participate from across the country. Throughout the day there will be specific training by age group according to the philosophy of the Maccabi Tel Aviv Academy.

The open training day will take place on September 2nd (should there be an overwhelming response an additional day will be added).
2010-2012 will begin at 16:45
2008-2009 will begin at 18:00

The greatest league victories

1970: Maccabi Tel Aviv 5:0 Hapoel Tel Aviv
On January 24, 1970 Maccabi Tel Aviv recorded an unforgettable victory over Hapoel Tel Aviv that went unmatched until 2016 as the biggest win over their city rival. Despite the difficult weather conditions, there were over 21,000 fans who filled the stands at Bloomfield Stadium. The hero of the contest was Giora Spiegel who was one of the key players for the Israel National Team at the World Cup that same year as he showed exactly why he was the maestro and led the Yellow & Blue with a hat trick. In the 7’ he scored his first goal and in the 20’ he doubled the advantage with a gorgeous free kick. Rahamim Talbi added the third (47) and Nissim Bachar scored the fourth (54) while Talbi assisted on Speigel’s third in the 61’.

1995/96: Maccabi Haifa 1:3 Maccabi Tel Aviv
In the mid-90’s the rivalry with Maccabi Haifa was at its peak and this match was considered to be one of the highlights of the season. With five contests left in the campaign, the Yellow & Blue arrived at Kiryat Eliezer for what was a decisive tilt between the sides and one that would go into the Maccabi pantheon. Haifa took the lead thanks to Roni Levy, but in the second half Eli Driks and Nir Klinger found the back of the goal. With nine minutes remaining, Avi Nimni sealed the deal for the league title and eventually the Double.

Peretz: “This will give us a push for Thursday’s match”

Dor Peretz, the veteran Maccabi Tel Aviv midfielder scored a goal in the side’s 2:0 win over Maccabi Haifa and looked back at the season opening victory:

“We weren’t as good as we could have been in the first half as we lost a number of balls and weren’t as focused, but the second half we were much better and I’m happy that we won. There is still plenty to work on in order for us to look as good as we can be, but we got the season off on the right foot.”

Match by match:
“This will give us a push for Thursday’s match and it’s a great feeling to win. We defeated a difficult opponent in a tough league match. We are focusing on each game one at a time. It’s not easy to play so many matches in just ten days and every one is important. We continue to improve match by match and I hope that we will continue to win.”

The club’s youth movement:
“As a player who grew up in the Youth Department and was promoted to the First Team pretty much by myself, it’s a great feeling to see thee players who are coming up from the youth and that they can prove that they belong here. I’m happy that they are my teammates.”

The return leg against Sarpsborg on Thursday:
“Since Thursday we only focused on the match against Maccabi Haifa and now we can begin to concentrate on this week’s match against Sarpsborg. We always believe that anything can happen and we will give our best in order to do what we need to. There’s no question that the fans support makes a huge difference for us.”

Maccabi Tel Aviv 2:0 Maccabi Haifa

Maccabi Tel Aviv opened their Ligat Japanika campaign welcoming Maccabi Haifa, this evening at the Netanya stadium.

Head Coach Vladimir Ivic’s Starting XI included keeper Predrag Rajkovic, Eli Dasa, Sheran Yeini, Jair Amador, Enric Saborit, Dor Peretz, Avi Rikan, Eyal Golasa, Chico Ofoedu, Itay Shechter, and Yonatan Cohen. Available on the bench were keeper Haviv Ohayon, Eitan Tibi, Ruslan Barsky, Dor Micha, Vidar Kjartansson, Omer Atzily, Eliran Atar.

First Half
In the 21st minute, Shlomi Azulai of Maccabi Haifa ran directly at the Maccabi defenders, with a deflection taking it back into his path, the Haifa number 10 struck the crossbar for the most significant chance in the opening 20 minutes. 

In the 36th minute, Sheran Yeini dramatically cleared the ball off the line after a shot from the middle of the Maccabi Tel Aviv 18-yard box.

Maccabi Tel Aviv’s best chance of the first half came in the closing stages, when Avi Rikan forced Israeli International Guy Haimov into action with a left footed driven strike low to the keepers left. After a rather quiet first half, the two sides were stuck at a 0-0 deadlock.

Second Half
In the 65’ minute, Itay Shecter received a perfect lob from the substitute Dor Micha, and clinically struck the ball on a half volley into the back of the net. Maccabi Tel Aviv took the lead 1-0. 

In the aftermath of the Shechter goal, Michiel Kramer received a straight red card from the referee in the 67’, to take Maccabi Haifa down to 10 men. Maccabi Tel Aviv led 1-0 at that point with a man advantage.

In the 75’ Yonatan Cohen had a knuckling shot saved by an impressive save from Guy Haimov, leading to a corner kick.

The title defense began with a victory over Bnei Sakhnin. Omer Barami gave the young Yellow & Blue the lead while the host’s drew even. However, substitute Bar Cohen found winner as Maccabi took home the 3 points. For the full Match Report click here.

Maccabi “Oded” Tel Aviv 4:2 Bnei Yehuda
The Under-17 side also picked up an opening day win as Eliezer Ben Aharon’s side defeated Bnei Yehuda 4:2 at the PenguinPickUp Training Ground at Kiryat Shalom. Nehoray Bitton, Tal Torjman (x2) and Or Roizman scored for the Yellow & Blue. Ben Aharon: “It was important to open the season up with a win especially after coming from behind at the half. The match wasn’t played at a very high level, but that’s expected for the first game of the season. We will have to work hard to reach our goals with a lot of will, desire and belief. The players took a good step forward towards our goal and I know that I have something to work with here to continue to move ahead. Next week we visit Tubruk which is a tough pitch. We’ll be ready.”

Dear Supporter

Welcome back for the start of the 18/19 Ligat Japanika League.

I would like to start by thanking you for being part of the Maccabi family. To be part of Maccabi is to be part of something bigger than oneself. We believe we have a management team and group of players that will epitomize just that over the course of the next 36 games. We are all Maccabi. We will succeed if we all work together to put the team’s success ahead of any individual goal.

This squad is youthful. I trust with that you will see commitment and hunger. What we have got is a large number of players that have grown up in Maccabi. Whose goal as young players was to wear the sacred Yellow and Blue shirt in front of you. I know all the players, especially those who are 100% Maccabi, are here to win and if they don’t, I believe they are the types to give everything on the pitch trying.

The Club is built on values such as Excellence, Loyalty and Desire to Succeed. We are fortunate to be led by a committed and truly engaged, owner, Mitch Goldhar.

We will continue to work hard and never give up so that you can relate to the those values and have pride in your club. We are all part of the fabric of this Club and we must all follow the ethos of Maccabism – a combination of killer instinct and winning spirit.

We have worked hard this summer to bring together the coaching staff and squad as early as possible. Off the field, we are delighted to have assembled a group of sponsors that is befitting of been part of what is Maccabi. I would also like to thank all of the employees of Maccabi. The Israeli football summers are short and the demands continue to increase. Without the dedication of the staff, we would not be the club that we are.

There will be bumps and upsets along the way. Hours, days and weeks when your patience might be tested. But we need you. We will always need you. I know we have a team that will repay your faith and remarkable support.

The late Avi Cohen once said: “To be part of Maccabi Tel Aviv is to be the greatest, the most beautiful and the most successful”.

“I remember our first match in 2013/14 against Hapoel Acre after we were knocked out of the Champions League qualification rounds following a 3:3 draw against Basel. Barak Itzhaki scored the first goal versus Acre and then Eran Zahavi added the second in a 2:0 win which sent us on our way to the championship.”
