Stats Talk: Numbers from the first leg in Armenia

The Pyunik long balls
One could see the difference in the style of play by the two sides during the first match as Pyunik primarily used the long ball and in essence gave up on controlling the ball in favor of quickly getting into the attacking area. Maccabi players made 97 short passes (between 0-10 meters) while Pyunik only made 36. On the other hand, the Armenians made 50 passes of 40 meters compared to the Yellow & Blue’s 37. The average pass by Pyunik was 25.8 meters while Maccabi’s stood at 19.7.

Another interesting statistic was the combination of keeper Andrija Dragojević and striker Mohamed Konaté as 7 passes from the shot stopper to the Ivorian footballer made their way into Maccabi territory or to the center circle.

At the end of the day, despite the differences in style between the teams, Maccabi controlled the pace of play and in key passes, which is one of the most important factors in today’s football. Pyunik made 3 accurate key passes out of 5 attempts while Vladimir Ivic’s side made 7 of 10 attempts.

The Armenian’s key defender
Despite Maccabi’s dominance in controlling the flow of the match in the first leg (68% possession) Pyunik was able to keep a clean sheet. The key player in maintaining the defensive presence was Russian central defender Maksim Zhestokov (#66) who put in an impressive performance.

The central defender was involved in 14 tackles and won 10 of them. In aerial battles Zhestokov won 4 of 6 while in tackles on the ground he took home 6 of 8. He also stole 6 balls and one of his passes turned into a key pass.

Threats up front
The Pyunik attack couldn’t find the back of the Maccabi goal, however there were a number of players who threatened the Yellow & Blue keeper. The striker Konaté (#11) had three attempts on goal with one of them on target and left winger Alik Arakelyan (#18) had similar numbers along with successful dribbles. In the first leg he had 4 successful dribbles out of 7 attempts – the most amongst the Pyunik players.

It’s 100% Maccabi: The Blue Kit for 2018/19

The Maccabi Tel Aviv Blue Kit for the 2018/19 Season is here and it’s all about the fans. This is the second consecutive season that the Club has developed, designed and manufactured a unique and high quality sports wear line. The kits are tailored to the needs of the Club’s players and fans and present a perfect blend of design, advanced technology and uncompromising comfort. All this in order to give the players and fans a perfect sporting experience.

This season, the Away Kit’s new design combined striped royal blue, dark blue and gold with the Club’s emblem right next to the heart and Fear None, Respect All written on the back.

100% Maccabi
As part of the unique launch of the Kit, 15 of the Club’s fans unveiled the shirt on their social networks in a process that saw the campaign go viral amongst all of the Yellow & Blue supporters. These same fans were phoned up by the Club and asked to come to a photo shoot without knowing which campaign they were taking part in. When they arrived on the set, they were shown the brand new Blue Kit and were told about their important role in its launch.

The Kit was unveiled by the fans first, long before the Club’s official announcement as an integral part of the 100% Maccabi campaign concept that is part of the Club, players and fans with was launched at the start of the season.

Barsky: “Maccabi is a club that always aims for excellency”

Midfielder Ruslan Barsky signed a new contract until 2022 and spoke to the Official Website about what it means to be a part of Maccabi, the team he grew up in:

North Football School New Format

The North Football School is expanding and this season there will be two training facilities associated with the school: The Tel Aviv University that renovated their synthetic pitches and the Athletic Center at Hadar Yosef. The programming will be in full conjunction with the Youth Academy. The North Football School’s goal is to provide the children with the correct elements and best professional foundation, training them to be first class players.

This coming season, the players will enjoy two training sessions during the week (not on Saturday) as the Club’s Youth Academy will also organize a league within the club in which players will play against other teams.

1. Tel Aviv University – Klatskin Street 2 (corner Chaim Levanon)
The Tel Aviv University Facility is home to the Football School and the Maccabi Tel Aviv North League Teams. The facility has brand new synthetic pitches that were renovated over the summer in order to improve the level of the training sessions at the facility.
This coming season, the facility will have a number of new Football School teams for children ages 5-8.

2. Athletic Center at Hadar Yosef – Bekhor Shalom Shitrit Street 6, Tel Aviv
The Maccabi Tel Aviv North Football School also takes place at the National Athletic Stadium. There is a large grass field at the site which will help the youngsters continue to improve as footballers.

This season there will also be a Girls Team under the direction of Coach Dana Nisenboim – 050-6300890. The Girls Team is open for children born between 2006-2011.

Ticket Sales Toto Cup Semifinals

Maccabi Tel Aviv will host Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Toto Cup Semifinal on Sunday August 19th at 21:00. The match will take place at the Netanya Stadium and tickets will go on sale today, Tuesday August 14th at 18:00 via the Leaan Website with priority being given to 2018/19 Season Ticket Holders. On Wednesday, tickets will go on sale via the Leaan Ticket Office and by Telephone.

Season Ticket Holders will have priority to purchase tickets until Friday August 17th at 12:00 after which should tickets remain, sales will open up to the general public.

Tickets are on sale via the Leaan Ticket Office located at 42 Frishman Street, Tel Aviv, telephone *8780 and via the Leaan Website.

Ruslan Barsky signs new 4-year-deal

Ruslan Barsky, a product of Maccabi’s Youth Department returned to the club this summer having spent the past six seasons on loan at Bnei Yehuda, Maccabi Kabilio Jaffa, Hapoel Jerusalem, Beitar Tel Aviv Ramle and Hapoel Haifa for which he won the State Cup last season.

Barsky, told the club’s official website: “I am delighted to have signed a new contract at the club I grew up and was educated at. I went through quite a journey in order to return to Maccabi Tel Aviv through the front door. I would like to express my gratitude to the coaching staff and management from expressing faith in me and will do everything in order to justify that faith”.

Maccabi’s CEO, Ben Mansford, added: “As much as I am pleased with the new signings, what has given me equal pleasure is the Academy graduates who have returned as Premier League players and who constantly show their commitment to our club. Ruslan had to overcome a serious injury at an early age and has come back stronger and developed through the loan system. After been a significant part of Hapoel Haifa’s success last season, Ruslan has gone to another level this pre-season. This new and long term contract is a recognition of not only his ability but also of how hard work and desire get rewards”. 

Barsky, who captained Maccabi’s Youth Team which won the League and Cup double back in 2010/11 season together with Dor Micha, made his senior debut on August 19th 2012 in a Toto Cup match against Maccabi Netanya. Barsky then joined Bnei Yehuda on loan but after making 5 appearances suffered an injury which side-lined him for the rest of the season. In order to resurrect his career, Barsky joined Maccabi Kabilio Jaffa where he made 30 appearances for the third division side in 2013/14 season alongside Maor Kandil. The following season, Barsky climbed a division and joined Hapoel Jerusalem for which he made 38 appearances in Israel’s second tier. In 2015/16 Barsky joined Beitar Tel Aviv Ramle where he scored his debut senior goal on the way to a total of seven and 82 appearances over a two-year-loan-spell. The talented midfielder, marked his return to the top flight as the 2017/18 season he spent on loan at Hapoel Haifa culminated with 2 goals in 43 appearances and State Cup winners medal.

 

Blast from the past: Maccabi makes Israeli Football History in Europe

This week 26 years ago, Maccabi Tel Aviv made history. Just a few months after winning the 1991/92 league title, the Yellow & Blue became the first Israeli to play in a European competition after the country officially joined UEFA. The Head Coach at the time was Avram Grant who led the way in 1992/93 Champions League qualifying and played Valletta from Malta in the historic tie. Of course, this is the answer to one of the most legendary trivia questions in the Club’s history, “Who was Maccabi’s first opponent in a UEFA competition?” Let’s take a look back at what happened over a quarter century ago:

7 Academy Members with the Israel U19 National Team

The Israel Under-19 National Team played a pair of friendlies against their counterpart from Romania. The matches were held in preparation for the European Championship qualifiers in November when they will face Azerbaijan, Liechtenstein and Georgia.

The first friendly took place on Tuesday as the Blue & White fell 2:1 while on Thursday Alon Hazan’s side defeated Romania 2:0.

The Maccabi Tel Aviv players who took part in the friendlies were, keeper Daniel Peretz, defenders Alon Shtrozberg, Tomer Mahluf, Amit Glazer, midfielders Yoav Hofmayster, Eden Kartzev and striker Mufleh Shalata.
