July 12: The First Match of the Season
After holding the preseason training camp in Poland, Maccabi will face their first test of the new campaign when they visit Ferencvaros in Budapest for Europa League First Round qualifying action. July 19: Maccabi Tel Aviv – Ferencvaros, 20:00 Netanya Stadium
The first Yellow & Blue home match of the season will be the second leg against Ferencvaros and will be held exactly one week after the first tie in Hungary. As a reminder, should Maccabi advance to the second round they will play the winner of Radnički Niš from Serbia or the winner of UE Sant Julià of Andorra and Gzira United from Malta from the preliminary qualifying round.

July 28-29 (Date to be confirmed): Maccabi Tel Aviv – Beitar Jerusalem, Netanya Stadium
Vladan Ivic’s side will begin the Toto Cup competition against Beitar Jerusalem. Changes have been made to the format his season and Maccabi Tel Aviv will not be in the group stages of the tournament since the Yellow & Blue and Beitar are in European competitions. The winner will advance to the semifinals while the loser will play in a placement match.

Maxim Grechkin extended his contract at Maccabi Tel Aviv as the 22-year-old left-back signed a new one-year-deal with an option for another season and joined newly promoted side Hapoel Hadera on a season long loan deal.

Maccabi’s CEO Ben Mansford told the club’s official website: “Max was one of the first development professionals that I saw play on loan last season. I’ve continued to monitor his progress along with Patrick van Leeuwen who is leading the process of delivering the next generation. As well continuing to progress with his career, I’ve been impressed with Max’s personality and desire to realize his ultimate ambition of playing for Maccabi. I am delighted he has signed a new contract. I look forward to seeing Max play in the IPFL.”.

Grechkin, a product of Maccabi’s youth department who spent last season on loan at Hapoel Ramat Hasharon where he made 31 appearances in all competitions, and previously at Beitar Tel Aviv Ramle, is set to make his debut season in the top flight.

Maccabi Tel Aviv played the final friendly of their Poland Training Camp and ended their 3 games on a high note scoring a 4:0 win over Bytovia Bytow from the Polish league’s second division. Head Coach Vladan Ivic and Avi Rikan summed up the performance:

“It’s nice to win the game. It’s important that the team is getting better day by day and that is what we want to do here at training camp, improve technically, tactically and physically.”

Implementing what has been done in the training session during the actual match:
“That is our target. I want the players to take what we are working on during the sessions and implement it during the game. Every day we are improving and every game is better as well. We are still not at the level where we need to be, but I believe that day by day we will continue to improve.”

About Jair Amador and Enric Saborit’s debuts:
“They played the first 45 minutes of the match and it was their first game. Their physical condition is improving and I’m sure they will be ready for the start of the season.”

Avi Rikan scored the 3rd goal in the victory commented: “These matches are primarily used to get into game shape and understand the demands of the staff. I am happy that we are jelling as a unit and there are many players who returned from being on loan, so it’s important that we continue to mesh together. We still have a number of days that we can continue to put in hard work and prepare for the first leg of the Europa League qualifier.”

The intensity of the training camp:
“We’re enjoying working hard. The group of guys here like working hard and they want to succeed. The training camp is going well and this is the basis for the upcoming season. We know what our objectives are here.”

The upcoming qualifier against Ferencvaros:
“We still have time, but this is a very important match. We want to continue the Club’s European tradition and we want to be ready to go.”

About the new recruits Jair and Saborit:
“First off they are great guys. It’s terrific to see new players arriving from different countries and becoming a part of the team. We’re helping them, they’ve only been here for a few days and haven’t been part of all of the preparations together with us. I believe that with time we will see some fantastic things.”

Prematch
Just ahead of the start of the Europa League qualifying campaign against Ferencvaros on July 12th, Maccabi Tel Aviv held their third and final friendly at their Poland Training Camp. The Yellow & Blue met Bytovia Bytow of the Polish second division as Head Coach Vladan Ivic continued to analyze the squad.

Maccabi Tel Aviv Starting XI – Daniel Tenenbaum, Eli Dasa, Jair Amador, Eitan Tibi, Enric Saborit, Dor Peretz, Eyal Golasa, Dor Micha, Matan Hozez, Itay Shechter, Vidar Kjartansson.

First Half
Maccabi began the match well and had a number of chances early on in the contest. Shechter was very active and was able to draw a number of fouls which allowed Kjartansson the chance to take a number of free kicks but the Icelander couldn’t find the back of the goal. In the 21’ the striker finally scored after taking a through ball by Shechter and went one on one with the keeper, putting the ball into the goal for a 1:0 lead.

Three minutes later, Maccabi doubled their advantage as Shechter scored his first in Yellow & Blue. Micha passed the ball to Golasa who left it for Shechter as he dribbled by 3 players and scored to give Ivic’s squad a 2:0 lead. Bytovia had a free kick in the 30’ but Tenenbaum made the alert stop while 8 minutes later, Dasa and Saborit played the ball to Micha who had a chance from 16 meters but the ball went into the Polish defense.

Second Half
Ivic made a number of substitutions to begin the second half as Haviv Ohayon, Shachar Fiban, Sean Goldberg and Avi Rikan were inserted in place of Tenenbaum, Jair, Saborit and Hozez. In the 48’ Vidar almost scored the 3rd goal off a header from a Dasa cross, but the keeper made the timely save.

The Maccabi pressure paid off in the 53’ as Kjartansson received the ball in the box and left it off for Rikan who came in from behind and put it into the goal for a 3:0 advantage. One minute later Bytovia took another ball out of their goal as Golasa put home a right footed shot from 16 meters out for a 4:0 lead.

In the 60’ Ivic made two more personnel changes as Yonatan Cohen and Roslan Bersky came on for Golasa and Shechter while 5 minutes later Schoenfeld was inserted in place of Vidar. Dan Glazer, Or Dasa, Eliran Atar and Mavis Tchibota all came on for Maccabi as the match began to wind down.

Ohayon made a big save in the 78’ off a header, while Atar, Cohen and Rikan all had chances for the Yellow & Blue that missed the target as Maccabi wrapped up a 4:0 victory in their last friendly of training camp.

To Be Itay Shechter: Training Session Through the Eyes of the Striker

This morning, the players began the final third of their training camp as they prepared for today’s friendly. Check out the photos:

Maccabi Tel Aviv’s Omer Atzili sat down at training camp to discuss a myriad of topics from the fans, to the past season and the campaign which they are about to embark on:

“I’m excited that we are at the start of the season, the beginning of the European qualifiers and meeting all of the new teammates that joined us.”

Last season’s ups and downs:
“I began last season pretty well and the club was in a decent place on the table, plus we made it into the Europa League Group Stages. But then I got hurt and was out of action for 5-6 months. It wasn’t easy to watch especially when I thought that I could help out. I was so hungry as everything had been going my way. All I wanted to do was touch the ball and play and I scored a couple of goals near the end of the campaign. I hope that I’ll be able to continue how I ended last season into the upcoming one.”

Lessons learnt from last season:
“We learnt a lot from last season which was not easy. One of the most important things that we did learn was that when you have the chance to help out, you have to and kill the game. If it’s 1:0, make it 2:0 and then 3:0. If it’s 0:0, take advantage of the first opportunity to make it 1:0 and then win the match.”

Looking ahead to the upcoming campaign:
“We’ve turned the page and we know what we want from ourselves and where we have to improve, what our goals are. That’s how we will take the championship and various titles.”

Personal expectations:
“My personal goal is to win a meaningful title which is something I still haven’t done in my career. I’m going to soon be 25 and I don’t want to miss out.”

The importance of players who have grown up through the Maccabi Youth Department playing a role in the upcoming campaign:
“We can see their importance in the training sessions. The players who have grown up in the Maccabi system can help out a lot as they have the Maccabi values, being winners and battling for titles every season. That’s what the Club is looking for. They understand what’s expected to be a part of Maccabi’s first team after playing for other clubs in the league. We’re happy that they are here and I hope that they will all succeed.”

The importance of the fans:
“The fans should expect to see a new Maccabi and a Maccabi that knows what we want from ourselves and knows what our goals are. Together with the fans we can play well both at home and away and we also want to make sure that our opponents will fear us. I hope that’s what will happen this season.”

Just before celebrating the Sabbath with a festive Friday night dinner, the team held an evening training session where the players who didn’t play at least 60 minutes in the friendly the day before held a full practice plus a mini-match. The players who played for more than 60 minutes held a light session that included a football-tennis tournament.

Following the session, the players gathered for the traditional Friday Night Sabbath dinner that also included celebrating Yonatan Cohen’s Birthday.

Maccabi Tel Aviv held their second friendly of the preseason. Vladan Ivic’s players faced the champion of Cyprus APOEL Nicosia and fell 2:1 on a late goal in the 88’. At the end of the contest the Head Coach and midfielder Dor Micha spoke about the club’s performance.

“It was a hard game against a good opponent and a strong team. We played the first 45 minutes had some good and some not so good moments. The second half was better for us. For me it’s important that the guys work hard and they know what I expect of them. I’m sure we are on the right path.”

About the new players Jair Amador and Enric Saborit:
“I expect that they’ll integrate into the team as quickly as possible and be ready for the first official game against Ferencváros on July 12th.”

Following the match Dor Micha commented: “It’s important for us to get into shape and jell as a team in these types of matches. We still have plenty of work to do.”

About Itay Shechter’s integration into the team:
“We know him for many years, so when he arrived we welcomed him with open arms and he’s doing great. I’m sure that he will contribute plenty throughout the season.”

The upcoming Europa League contest against Ferencváros:
“They aren’t an easy opponent, but one of our goals as always is to advance to the Europa League Group Stages. We begin the journey in two weeks and we will have to be ready to go for this match.”
