Another European competition in which Maccabi Tel Aviv have appeared is the Intertoto Cup, which was abandoned after the 2008/09 season. This, the least prestigious of the European competitions, earned its winner a place in the qualifying rounds of the later also abandoned UEFA Cup and was designed to give a further opportunity to unseeded clubs and countries to get a foot in the European door, albeit in the second-ranked competition on the continent. It quickly became the most “popular” competition in Israel and fifteen Israeli clubs in all participated in the competition that began very early on in the season. Maccabi Tel Aviv participated four times, for the first time in the 1977/78 season. The following season they were drawn into the same group as domestic rivals Maccabi Netanya, who emerged winners of the tournament that year. In 1980/81 Maccabi Tel Aviv once again had Maccabi Netanya as group-mates and in 1993/94 they made their fourth and final appearance in the competition.

Maccabi’s overall record in the tournament was not particularly impressive, in stark contrast with the only three victories they registered during their four years of participation. First in 1977 a 3-4 away victory over Dutch Eredivisie outfit FC Twente, followed the next year by a 5-1 drubbing of Austrian side First Vienna and finally, in the same 1978/79 season, a second impressive away win, 0-3 win against Swiss stalwarts FC Zurich. Apart from that Maccabi played out three draws and sixteen losses in a competition that will not be remembered with particular fondness by the Maccabi fans of that era.
