One look at the current state of affairs in the Israeli Premier League will tell you that tomorrow's match between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Maccabi Netanya is a meeting between opposite ends of the table. But that hasn't always been the case. Both sides have played a significant role in the history of Israeli football and encounters between the two have provided a wealth of fascinating and often important matches. Both of these "Yellow" Maccabi teams have often been entangled in top flight duels and in particular eye-catching games replete with goals. In the 1978/79 championship season, when the ranks of Maccabi Tel Aviv were swelled with such illustrious names as strikers Benny Tabak and Vicky Peretz, midfielder Giora Spiegel, the late Avi Cohen and many others, the "F-15s" as they were then called hosted and narrowly beat their Netanya namesakes and fellow high-flyers at a Bloomfield Stadium that then had a capacity of over 20,000 spectators. But that season would be remembered in particular for the second encounter between the two, a match that settled the destiny of the championship in Tel Aviv's favour. In the event the champions-to-be needed only a goalless draw to clinch the title in a season that saw this championship joy tempered by tragedy, as Maccabi Tel Aviv's veteran and devoted head coach, Haim Leibovitch ("Leibo") suffered a heart attack on the way home from the match and died a short while later.
