On December 19th 1931, 94 years and one month ago, the first-ever meeting between Maccabi Tel Aviv and Hapoel Tel Aviv took place, as part of the Eretz Israel League. The match was staged at the packed Maccabiah Stadium, with 5,000 spectators in attendance, and resulted with a 1-1 draw as with Shmuel Becker was on target for Maccabi while Avraham Nudelman scored for Hapoel.

Since then, a total of 234 Tel Aviv derbies were played in all competitions. The total record currently stands on 97 Maccabi victories 68 victories for Hapoel and 68 matches that ended in a draw with a total goal tally of 325-241.

In 168 league derbies, the record stands at 63 Maccabi victories, 46 Hapoel victories and 59 matches that ended with a draw. The total goal tally in league matches currently stands at 217–156. After the number of victories were tied at 45 wins each at the end of the 2012/13 season, since then Maccabi increased the gap to 17 matches.

Maccabi is currently on a 23-match unbeaten run in the league which is a club record against any opponent in league history. During this run of matches Maccabi won 16 derbies while seven were drawn with a staggering goal difference of 53–8. This 23-match streak is the fourth-longest unbeaten run, in league history. The record which currently stands at 29 matches is held by Maccabi Haifa against Hapoel Petah Tikva between 1992–2003.

Maccabi has a 29-match unbeaten run, in derbies of which 21 resulted with a victory and eight were drawn as the goal tally stands on 66-12.
Hapoel’s last victory in a Tel Aviv derby was recorded on April 26th 2014, exactly 11 years and 9 months ago (4,293 days).
The biggest derby victory: four 5–0 victories Maccabi recorded in 1970, 2017, 2022 and 2024.

A total of 2,560,000 fans attended the 162 Tel Aviv derbies in the league which were played with fans in the stadium, averaging 15,800 fans per match. The highest gate average among all league matchups in the history of Israeli football.
Maccabi faced Hapoel 8 times on Matchday 20 with the record currently standing on 4 victories 2 draws and 2 defeats.

A total of 391 players featured for Maccabi in Tel Aviv derbies. Miko Belo, made the most appearances for Maccabi in this fixture featuring in 33 derbies. Sheran Yeini, is second with 32 while Benny Tabak and Avi Nimni are both tied in third place with 29 appearances each.

A total of 94 Maccabi players scored in the Tel Aviv derby. Maccabi’s all-time top scorers in derbies are Eran Zahavi and Shiye Glazer, scoring 11 goals each. Avi Nimni holds the record for delivering the most assists against Hapoel, with 6 assists to his name. Eran Zahavi and Giyora Spiegel share the second place, with 5 assists each.

A total of 57 players featured for both clubs in derbies. Of the current squad, Osher Davida, Sagiv Yehezkel, Raz Shlomo, Yoav Gerafi, and Dani Gropper have previously played for Hapoel.

Roi Mishpati managed to keep his goal locked for 82 minutes before Igor Matanovic’s header into the top corner sealed Freiburg’s 1-0 victory.

At the end of the match at the Eurppa Park that resulted with a sixth defeat of the campaign, Mishpati said: “We felt it was close. We created a few good chances, but in the last ten minutes they really pinned us back. That’s how our campaign has looked, we suffer and work hard, and in the end concede a goal. But to be honest, they scored a great goal. We move forward from here.”

Mishapti who pulled a stunning reflex save midway through the first half as Maccabi were hanging on, reflected: “They delivered a corner to the near post and I reacted at the very last second, I did what I saw, and I’m happy with that save. Instinct.”

“Playing at this level is fun. Throughout the campaign we have been playing against top-level teams, and in the end it’s the small details that tip the balance. But it’s really enjoyable to play matches like these,” he added.

On his performance and the competition with Ofek Melika for the goalkeeper position, Mishpati said: “The coach knows what I’m worth and who I am. Ofek has been doing a great job so far, and anything I can give him, I give him. It’s good to have competition, and of course we push each other to deliver even better performances.”

Maccabi arrived at SC Freiburg’s Europa Park ahead of their EUROPA League MD7 penultimate match of the 2025/26 European campaign. With a singe point from their opening match away to Paok and next week’s final home match against Italian outfit Bologna, Maccabi will try and salvage a result. But with a depleted squad that is missing several key players through injuries and against a tough German side that is currently fifth in the table and 8th in the Bundesliga, Zarko Lazetic’s side has a tough task on their hands. As Tyrese Asante, Ali Camara and Osher Davida were joined by Elad Madmon on the list of absentees that already includes Ion Nicolaescu, Kristijan Belic and Denny Gropper, Lazetic bolstered his squad with members of the U19’s squad.

Roi Mishpati returned to play in goal giving Ofek Melika much needed rest. Noam Ben Harush started on the right of defensive line that included Heitor dis Santos, Raz Shlomo and Itai Ben Hemo as three central defenders with Roy Revivo returning to his left wing-back position. Ben Lederman and Itamar Noy were assigned to Maccabi’s engine room with Dor Peretz in a slightly more attacking role at the top of the midfield trio. Sagiv Jehezkel and Saied Abu Farchi led the line upfront in a bid to try and breach a Freiburg defense that hasn’t lost in the Europa League phase.

On the bench alongside goalkeepers Yoav Gerafi and Ofek Melika, Lazetic named Kervin Andrade, Yoanas Malede, Issouf Sissokho, Helio Varela, Ido Shahar, Idan Weinberg, Roey Magor, Itai Zafrani, Lotem Asres and Ilay Ben Simon.

First Half

Freiburg dominated the early stages of the match as the hosts placed Maccabi under the pressure pinging Lazetic’s players inside their own half. Nine minutes from the start Freiburg were awarded a free kick after Derry Scherhant was fouled by Itai Ben Hemo near the touchline. Jan-Niklas Beste tried crossing the ball into the danger zone but Maccabi’s defense managed top clear. Two minutes later Scherhant mnaged to get himself into the box but his left foot shot missed the target as the ball rolled wide of the post. In the 17th minute a mix-up between Roi Mishpati and his defense on the edge of the box almost gifted Freiburg a goal but Mishpati recovered to collect Igor Matanović’s attempt to catch him outside of his goal.

In the 25th minute Philip Treu’s corner was flicked by Freiburg’s captain Cristian Gunter and deflected off Saied Abu Farchi before Mishpati collected on his goal line. Right on the half hour mark Freiburg had two claims for penalties waived by Swedish referee Mohammed Al-Hakim as firs it was Scherhant who went down too easily Beste was signaled to get back on his feet following another challenge on the side side of the box. A Raz Shlomo slip gifted Matanovic the ball inside area but once again Mishpati charged out of his goal to make a good block that kept his goal locked. 

Ben Lederman was booked by the referee for a foul on Matanovic just inside Maccabi’s half on 45. Inside injury time Maccabi came close to break the deadlock as Abu Farchi headed Sagiv Jehezkel’s corner towards goal but Noah Atubolu pulled a reflex save to punch the ball off his line.

Second Half

With no changes at halftime the second half began just like the first one as Freiburg placed Maccabi under siege. In the 55th minute Freiburg were awarded a corner before Ginter headed Scherhant’s cross but Mishpati pulled a stunning save to claw the ball out. Matanovic latched on the rebound but struck the crossbar before Yuito Suzuki blasted the loose ball over. Abu Farchi limped off in the 61st minute and was replaced by Yonas Malede as Lazetic made two more changes introducing Kervin Andrade and Helio Varela for Jehezkel and Dor Peretz.

In the 67th minute Matanovic dribbled into the Maccabi box and exchanged passes with Scherhant before shooting past Mishpati only for Roy Revivo to clear the ball off the line. A Maccabi corner in the 74th minute fell to Varela who fired a shot at goal but it lacked the power to beat Atubolu who collected with ease.

The dual between Mishpati and Scherhant continued in the 76th minute as well as the Freiburg 23-year-old curled a shot which Maccabi’s keeper caught once again. Lazetic added a fresh pair of legs into a tired midfield as Issouf Sissokho replaced Lederman in the 78th minute. In the 82nd minute Freiburg’s pressure paid off as the deadlock was finally broken as Matanovic rose high to meet Gunter’s cross with a powerful header into the top corner. Lazetic his fifth and final substitution in the 88th minute as Ido Shahar came on for Itamar Noy. Just before the fourth official signalled for 8 minutes of added time Maccabi’s counter attack saw Malede carry the ball but fail to slip it to Shahar who was in a good position to score.

The 24-year-old midfielder first addressed the team’s journey in the current campaign: “We played against top European teams. I think we deserved more, there were matches we played well, but the results weren’t what we wanted. This is a great opportunity for us to play a game like this tomorrow. We play in the league and win titles in order to reach games like these. We will be ready for tomorrow.”

On the opponents Maccabi will face tomorrow, Shahar added: “Both Freiburg and Stuttgart, that we faced, are excellent teams, in one of the best leagues in the world. They are well positioned in the league and in Europe. We have a good opportunity tomorrow and we’ll do our best.”

When asked about the security arrangements around the team, Shahar said: “We are used to it. But we are footballers and we focus on football. Everything around us doesn’t interest us, we focus on football.”

Maccabi continue their Europa League campaign as today (Wednesday) the team departed for Germany ahead of Thursday’s MD7 match away to Freiburg (19:45), the penultimate round of the league phase.

Earlier this morning, the team held their final training session at the Kiryat Shalom training complex, before heading for Ben Gurion Airport. This evening, the team will hold the pre-match Press Conference ahead of the match at the Europa-Park Stadion.

While Maccabi, collected one point from six matches and are ranked second from bottom, Freiburg are currently fifth in the Europa League standings with 14 points, a position that guarantees automatic qualification for the next phase.

Freiburg are currently 8th in the German Bundesliga with 24 points from 18 matches, and will face Maccabi on the back of a 2-2 draw away to Augsburg on Sunday.
