After a 2:0 win in Israel, Vladimir Ivic’s players will visit Serbia this Thursday for the second leg of second round Europa League qualifying. Maccabi will look to advance to the next round where Armenian outfit Pyunik will be waiting for them.

August 6: Europa League Playoff Round Draw
Although they haven’t qualified for the next stage, should Maccabi advance to the third round they will find out who they could potentially play in the playoff round (4th round) of the competition. The Yellow & Blue will also know if they will be seeded for the playoff round after the match on Thursday should they advance.

August 7 or 9: First Leg of Third Round of Europa League Qualifying
Maccabi will play Pyunik away on either Tuesday or Thursday should they advance.

August 16: Second Leg of Third Round of Europa League Qualifying in Netanya

August 25: (Date and time to be confirmed): Maccabi Tel Aviv – Maccabi Haifa, Netanya
The 2018/19 Israel Premier League Ligat Ha’Al gets underway with a terrific season opening match when Maccabi hosts the Greens from Haifa which on paper looks like the Match of the Week to begin the domestic campaign.

It’s still a long way off, but should Maccabi advance to the Playoff Round the first leg will take place on August 23rd with the return leg on August 30th.

After defeating Radnicki 2:0 in Israel last Thursday, Maccabi Tel Aviv left for rebut leg of second round Europa League qualifying. This evening, the players and professional staff arrived at Ben Gurion airport for their flight to Serbia.

On Wednesday August 1st, Head Coach Vladimir Ivic will hold his prematch press conference at the Cair Stadium where the club will also take part in the final training session ahead of Thursday night’s match (22:00 Israel time).

Veteran central defender Eitan Tibi spoke about the Club’s goals in Nis: “We aren’t looking back at what we did in the first leg and this won’t be an easy match. We are heading to Serbia to get the job done.” Number 18 continued: “We as a team have one goal which is to advance to the next stage. That’s the most important thing.”

Maor Kandil, Maccabi Tel Aviv’s new defender not only took part in his first training session with the Club, but also spent a few moments talking about what it feels like joining the Yellow & Blue:

“I just took part in my first training session and it was very exciting. I’m getting into the swing of things with the intensiveness of the practices.”

Humble beginnings:
“I started off in Liga Alef and then I went to the Leumit League. From there I made it to the Ligat Ha’Al, the Israel Premier League. I went through every stage of football in the country to get to where I am today and I’m very happy that I did. I worked very hard and I am looking forward to continuing to work hard at a Club like Maccabi whose goal is to win every available title. I hope that I can help out my new teammates.”

Acclimating to the Club:
“I played with some of the current Maccabi players who came back from loan when they were at Bnei Yehuda and I also won the State Cup with Sean Goldberg. As well, I played with Ruslan Barsky at Maccabi Kabilio Jaffa. Already being familiar with some of the players will really help me acclimate with the Club.”

Skills learnt from Futchi volley:
“When I was in the lower leagues I played Futchi volley, but once I made it to the Premier League I realized I had to make a choice of one or the other and of course my preference was football. However, Futchi volley helped my technical abilities playing the ball in the air and moving from tight areas with the ball as well.”

Being part of something new:
“Maccabi is really beginning something new this season and I feel like I am coming into a new team with a new professional staff. Everything is brand new and I am really happy to be a part of it. I am sure and I believe in myself that I’ll be able to help Maccabi Tel Aviv recover what rightfully belongs to the Club.”

Thoughts about his special song:
“I love the song and my friends have been sending me copies of it!”

Itay Shechter, who made his Yellow & Blue debut looked back at his first match with Maccabi Tel Aviv in a 1:0 win over Beitar Jerusalem in the Toto Cup “European Club” match which sent the Head Coach Vladimir Ivic’s side into the semifinals if the competition:

“It was my first match and a win a I’m happy we advanced to the semifinals. I’m a bit tired but I’m starting to get into the swing of things after slightly injuring my ankle. My performance was ok for a first match, but there’s still plenty of hard work to be done.”

Playing against his former club:
“It took a little bit of time as Beitar is close to my heart and I had a good period with them. I wish them all the best the rest of the way. But I came to Maccabi where I am now. We won three matches in the past week and all of the players are getting a chance to prove themselves. I’m happy we won and now we have a super important match in a few days which we have to get ready for.”

Final thoughts:
“I’m happy to be at Maccabi Tel Aviv where I’ll be giving everything I have to help the Club succeed and to take it back to where it belongs.”

Vladimir Ivic, the Maccabi Tel Aviv Head Coach looked back at his squad’s 1:0 win over Beitar Jerusalem in the Toto Cup “European Club” match which helped them advance to the competition’s semifinals:

“The second half was better but we controlled the beginning of the game. Beitar didn’t create chances and I can be satisfied with the defense but we need to be able to create chances up front. Maybe we didn’t create many chances today, but we won the game and that is what was most important today.”

Players participating in their first game of the season:
“A lot of players today played for the first time today and I’m satisfied with their performance. After 2-3 months they played their first game and it’s not easy, they gave their best. We have to continuing working every day and try to fix somethings that need improvement. Now are target is to need to win our next game.”

About Maor Kandil signing:
“We spoke about Kandil last month and he signed a contract today. He will have to work hard and learn how we want him to play over the next few days. Slowly but surely he will be ready to play for us.”

The Yellow & Blue moved on to the Toto Cup semifinals after defeating Beitar Jerusalem 1:0 in the “European Club” Match at the Netanya Stadium on Sunday July 29, 2018. Aaron Schoenfeld scored in the second half thanks to a Dan Glazer assist to give Maccabi Tel Aviv the win as they will now prepare in earnest for Thursday night’s second leg second round Europa League qualifying match at Radnicki in Nis, Serbia.

Head Coach Vladimir Ivic’s Starting XI included keeper Predrag Rajikovic, Ruslan Barsky, Sheran Yeini (C), Shahar Piven, Sean Goldberg, Dan Glazer, Eliel Peretz, Eyal Golasa, Matan Hozez, Aaron Schoenfeld, Itay Shechter.

Available on the bench were keeper Haviv Ohayon, Eli Dasa, Vidar Kjartansson, Dor Peretz, Jair Amador, Omer Atzily, Eliran Atar.

First Half
Maccabi looked to get on the board early as Hozez‘s left footed free kick just went over the bar in the 5’ as the Yellow & Blue controlled the pace of play for the following 25 minutes. In the 33’ Barsky sent a beauty of a ball to Shechter in the box, but his header just cleared the goal and went out while Goldberg tried his luck from 18 meters but his shot went out as the half ended goalless.

Second Half
Ivic made a pair of substitutions to freshen up the attack to begin the second half as Omer Atzily and Eli Dasa came on for Hozez and Golasa. The Yellow & Blue looked to find the elusive first goal of the contest and they did so in the 56’. Glazer sent Schoenfeld the ball in the box who turned and fired it behind the Beitar keeper for a 1:0 lead.

In the 59’ Dasa left Eliel Peretz the ball who’s chance just missed the target, while two minutes later Shechter made his way by one defender and chipped the ball over the keeper but it just went over the goal as Maccabi continued to pour on the offense. Eliran Atar was then introduced for goal scorer Schoenfeld in the 65’. In the 70’ Atzily had a nice chance from the top right hand corner of the box but the capital city side keeper Tamir Lalo made the timely save and two minutes later Atar took a nice pass from Goldberg but his low liner was taken care of by the keeper as Maccabi looked to double their advantage.

Vidar Kjartansson entered the contest in the 84’ for Shechter as Maccabi Tel Aviv wrapped up a 1:0 victory and advanced to the Toto Cup semifinals and will now prepare for Thursday’s Europa League Second Round Second Leg Qualifying Match at Radnicki in Nis, Serbia.
