The Striker from Chile: Happy Birthday Rodrigo Goldberg
History in Short
Goldberg’s Maccabi Tel Aviv Telenovela began in 1997/98 when the striker arrived in Israel from Universidad de Chile, one of the top clubs in Chile. In 13 appearances for his country’s national team, Goldberg record 4 goals and came to Kiryat Shalom full of confidence to help the Yellow & Blue. However after only half a season the striker was loaned back to his native Chile, until one day during the 2000/01 season when he received a phone call telling him to return to Israel.
Nir Levin began following Goldberg as he played for Maccabi’s reserve team. He finally made his way all the way back to the first team just in time for the Derby against Hapoel and scored the match’s first goal.
From there, Goldberg played three more seasons with Maccabi making 129 appearances while scoring 45 goals.

Top moment
If there was one thing that Goldberg loved, there’s no question that it was the Derby. The Chilean scored many Derby goals but the most famous and important marker was in the 2002/03 Derby. On Matchday 22, the Yellow & Blue had to face Hapoel just a week after falling to Bnei Yehuda. With the threat of losing two games in a row and the Championship race looming over their heads, plus a 3:1 loss in the first Derby of the season, everyone’s nerves were a bit rattled around Kiryat Shalom.
Over 37,000 fans filled the Ramat Gan Stadium and after 22 minutes Rodrigo Goldberg sent the Maccabi faithful into pandemonium. Andreas Prohonenkovs broke down the right wing and crossed the ball over Bruno Reis right to Goldberg’s feet. The Chilean stopped the ball cold and sent it past Shavit Elimelech and into the back of the goal. The score stood up until the final whistle as Maccabi went on to win the league title.
Season Ticket Distribution at the Raanana match
The Club wants to remind season ticket holders who haven’t picked up their season ticket package yet for the 2016/17 campaign that they will have another chance to do so at the Netanya Stadium on Wednesday August 8th.

- Come early to the stadium
- Fans who have purchased a parking pass may pick it up along with their season ticket on Wednesday
- The Box Office will be open beginning at 18:00 until the start of the match at 21:00
The season ticket distribution will be as follows:
- Western Upper & Lower Stands – Box Office 2 on the south-west side of the stadium
- Eastern Lower Stand – Box Office 3 on the south-east side of the stadium
- E+ & Eastern Upper Stand – Box Office 4 on the north-east side of the stadium
Ticket Sales Hajduk Split Home Match
After the Yellow & Blue made it by the Romanians, their attention is now focused on the Playoff Round and a two legged tie with Hajduk Split. The first match will take place on Thursday August 18th. Tickets go on sale to season ticket holders on Monday evening at 19:00 and will continue until Friday August 12th at 12:00. During this time period, season ticket holders will enjoy advance sales and can purchase their seats at a reduced price.
The advance ticket sales will take place at the club’s Official Team Stores located at Kiryat Shalon, 147 Dizengoff Street and Cinema City Rishon Le’Zion between the hours of Tuesday-Thursday 10:00-14:00 and 15:00-18:00. Tickets may also be purchased at the Leaan Ticket Office 101 Dizengoff Street, the Leaan Website and via telephone *8780.
Ticket sales for the general public will begin on Sunday August 14th at 19:00 through the Leaan Ticket Office at 101 Dizengoff Street, the Leaan Website and via telephone *8780.

Sa: “It doesn’t help if I score and we lose”
Orlando Sa, the Yellow & Blue’s Portuguese striker discussed the team’s Toto Cup defeat to BeninYehuda in a match that he scored the lone Maccabi goal:
“Yes, it wasn’t the best game and we played different tactics. This was the first time we played this way. We were trying to understand the system and we had a number of opportunities but they scored two goals and we only scored one. Weneed to accept this result and have to do better the next game.”
Winning & losing:
“I felt better in other games because I didn’t score but the team won the games. It doesn’t help if I score and we lose the game. I always try to do my best to score and I try everyday to help Maccabi.”
Transfers:
“I don’t know anything about this if the club wants to bring a striker or midfielder, you’ll have to ask Jordi about that. My job is to train everyday and help the team.”
Scoring:
“I only have two goals and I should have more but the team is winning so it’s ok. Of course the goals give me confidence. I had a few games without a goal and it’s never good to go for some time without a goal but I work hard every day and the goals will come.”
Playing the head game:
“This is about tactical and I don’t want to give my opinion about this and you have to ask the coach and others about this. My job is to train and accept what people say.”
Arveladze: “I am disappointed we were a bit soft”
Maccabi Tel Aviv recorded their first loss under Head Coach Shota Arveladze, falling 2:1 to Bnei Yenuda on Matchday 3 of the Toto Cup at the Moshava Stadium in Petach Tikva. The Georgian boss discussed the formation he uses, comparing the Pandurii match to the one this evening and the lack of aggressiveness:
“I feel bad of course and I am disappointed that our opponent was so aggressive and we know that everybody plays this way against us and we were a bit soft. In the crucial moments when you have to go for 50/50 balls we must be aggressive.”
Reason for not being as aggressive:
“I can imagine that no one wants to get injured, when you don’t want to get injured you end up getting injured.”
Comparing the Pandurii match and tonight’s game against Bnei Yehuda:
“I think it’s two absolutely different games. I never said it was a bad game, but we had 70% ball possession and plenty of one on one chances. The two game shave nothing to do with each other. You make some changes and we wanted to have a good game but we have to be 100% concentrated.”
Having three defenders instead of the usual four:
“We played with three defenders and I wanted to see how it works and it wasn’t bad. The first half was ok and we wanted to make some corrections and they know what I was talking about.”
Potential transfers:
“I’m not here to speak about transfers and what we are going to do. We have two important games coming up against Hajduk.”
Formation:
“If you see my games I haven’t changed my system as I always play 4-3-3. Just this evening was a bit different. We have a big squad and many games to play. This was the first time I tried tim okay three in the back.”
Maccabi falls to Bnei Yehuda in Toto Cup Action
A late Orlando Sa goal wasn’t enough to salvage a point against Bnei Yehuda as the hosts defeated Maccabi Tel Aviv by a 2:1 scoreline on Matchday Three of the Toto Cup.
Head Coach Shota Arveladze made a number of changes to his regular Starting XI for Toto Cup play as Haviv Ohayon started in goal with a defense of Eli Dasa, Omri Ben Harush, Tal Ben Haim and Dor Peretz in front of him. Shlomi Azulay making his season debut was in the midfield while Eyal Golasa, Eliel Peretz and Oscar Scarione who was making his first start manned the center of the pitch. Eden Ben Basat and winger Tal Ben Chaim who was wearing the captain’s armband provided the attack.
First Half
After a tentative start by both teams, Bnei Yehuda made good on the real first chance of the evening as Antonio Mersic put the home side on the board in the 14th minute with a blistering shot from the left side cleanly beating Ohayon for a 1:0 lead. Mersic then tried to turn the same trick again two minutes later but his chance when over the bar and out.
In the 22nd minute, an Azulay corner kick found Ben Haim’s head in the box but his effort went over the goal as Maccabi looked for the equalizer. Following a 26th minute water break, Azulay attempted a low 18 meter shot that missed the target and Ben Harush rifled a ball right over the goal in the 34th minute.
Bnei Yehuda almost doubled their lead in the 37th minute as Daniel Avital beat his defender on the left side and went in on Ohayon but the young keeper made a kick save to keep the deficit as is. In the 41st minute Ben Basat picked up a yellow card with the intensity of the match picking up as the sides went into the break with a 1:0 Bnei Yehuda advantage.
Second Half
Coach Arveladze made a pair of substitutions to open the second half as Yuval Shpungin, making his season debut and Barak Itzahki who was now wearing the captain’s armband were introduced for Scarione and Dasa. In the 51st minute Ben Basat has a long range effort that just scooted by the left post and out while two minutes later Azulay, Ben Basat, Golasa and Ben Chaim combined on a pretty passing play that resulted in the latter’s shot being collected by Bnei Yehuda’s second half substitute keeper Nikita Haikin.
Itzahki tried his luck in the 55th minute as his chance also didn’t find the target as Maccabi continued to search for the tying goal. However, Bnei Yehuda doubled their output as Almog Bozaglo cleaned up a rebound in front of the Maccabi goal to take a 2:0 lead in the 62nd minute while Gal Alberman who took the captain’s armband from Itzhaki and Matan Hozez were inserted into the match for Azulay and Ben Chaim.
Looking for a bit more offense, coach Arveladze made his 5th and final substitute in the 66th minute as Orlando Sa came on for Eliel Peretz. And that’s exactly what the boss got. Sa put in Ben Basat’s rebound to draw the Yellow & Blue to within one goal in the 74th minute.
Shpungin took a screamer of a shot a minute later but his attempt went just wide left as Maccabi continued to threaten the Bnei Yehuda goal. Hozez lifted a gorgeous corner to Ben Basat who headed it nicely but Ben Tzeiri just cleared it off of the line in the 82nd minute.
As Maccabi continued to dig hard for an equalizer it wasn’t meant to be as the Yellow & Blue dropped their first match of the campaign. They’ll now get ready for Hapoel Raanana in Toto Cup play at home on Wednesday evening at the Netanya Stadium.
Tibi: “There’s no such thing as an easy draw”
Eitan Tibi, the Yellow & Blue central defender is happy to make it to the playoff round of the Europa League and discussed his play on the pitch, teaming up with Egor Filipenko, improving match by match and the team’s European goals:
“Every year our goal is to always make the group stages of either the Europa League or the Champions League like last season. We still have another couple of matches in order to advance to the Europa League and hope we do exactly that.”
Improving match by match:
“As each match goes by we are feeling better and better about ourselves but we still aren’t there yet and we have plenty of work to do in order to keep improving our game.”
Playing with Egor Filipenko:
“Our play together isn’t where it needs to be just yet. We still have some work to do to get to where we need to be but as we continue to play more and more we will improve our play as well.”
Moving closer to the opponent’s goal:
“During the game my instincts tell me to play further up and if I can I will play closer to the goal.”
Europa League playoffs:
“My goal is to make sure we advance against any opponent that we will face. There’s no question that I hope we have a good draw, but there’s no such thing as an easy draw. Hopefully it will be a good draw for us.”
Giving up goals but scoring more:
“As a defender I never want give up goals. Pandurii had two chances and unfortunately they did score which shouldn’t have happened in my opinion and I hope that it won’t continue in the upcoming games.”
Scarione: “It’s always nice to score”
Maccabi Tel Aviv defeated Pandurii in the second leg of Europa League third round qualifying punching their ticket to the playoff round that will be begin in two weeks. The player who scored the match winning goal was the club’s new Argentinian midfielder, Oscar Scarione who slotted home the deciding marker in the 80th minute.
