Birthright Israel at Kiryat Shalom

Birthright Israel groups are well known throughout the country and now Maccabi Tel Aviv has also become part of the experience for these young Jews during their time in the Holy Land. The Maccabi Tel Aviv FC Foundation initiated this exciting new program as the Birthright Israel group arrived at Kiryat Shalom for an all encompassing Zionistic program.

This morning, more than 50 Birthright Israel: Mayanot participants descended upon the training facility for an educational and fun filled activity that began with an encounter with the Youth Club’s Captain, Tomer Altman who discussed the process he went through to become a player at Maccabi Tel Aviv. He also talked about the values he has learned and put in practice both on and off of the pitch as well as his experience playing in the UEFA Youth League Champions League. The midfielder answered questions from the group and of course took a picture with the participants.

Following the talk with Altman, the group split up into two as half went to participate in a training session on the Kiryat Shalom pitch under the direction of Coach Idan Kazinitz while the other group participated in an interactive multimedia presentation about the history of the Modern Day State of Israel through Maccabi Tel Aviv, sports and football given by Josh Halickman, the Head of the Maccabi Tel Aviv FC Foundation who commented: “The Israel Birthright group had a wonderful experience where they were able to see how Zionism, Israel, Judaism, sports and of course Maccabi Tel Aviv can all be combined into one. Through the rich sports history of Maccabi Tel Aviv, we took a trip though time beginning with Theodor Herzl to the first sports clubs of Maccabi throughout Palestine. We then delved into Maccabi’s Holocaust connection to the founding of the Modern Day State of Israel and examined key moments along with Israeli athletes who have helped mold and represent Israel around the globe. Over the course of the presentation, we weaved our way through the many distinct communities that makes Israel the true melting pot of Jews worldwide plus the many other religions and people that help make Israel a unique society.

Sports in Israel is part of the day to day life of the average person who picks up the newspaper, listens to the news or watches TV. From football to basketball and of course the Olympics, Israel continues to strive to be the best it can be and provides the society at large a much needed diversion. Sports is woven into the fabric of the Israeli culture from the thrill of victory to the agony of defeat and reflects a vibrant, modern and creative society.
 
The group also had the privilege to meet Tomer Altman, our youth team Captain and participated in a training session by a Maccabi Tel Aviv coach who used both fun and educational activities on the field at the Kiryat Shalom Training Facility. The participants saw first hand how the most professional sports franchise in the country uses the latest in technology to continuously keep their athletes ahead of the curve. I look forward to hosting more of these fabulous groups in the future.”

The Club mourns the passing of Nurit Mor Zt”l

Maccabi Tel Aviv FC is saddened by the untimely passing of the Youth Department’s secretary, Nurit Mor Zt”l who died this morning. Nurit began working at the club back in 2012 and was an integral part of the day to day operations of the youth training facility where she diligently worked until her final day. The Club extends condolences to the whole family and hopes that they should know no more sorrow.

Vicki Peretz was born on February 11, 1953. After beginning his career in the Maccabi Ramat Amidar youth department and first team, he participated in the 1972 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Youth Tournament. Under the direction of coach David Schweitzer, the Blue & White won the competition thanks to 12 goals by Vicky Peretz who had been toiling domestically in the second division. This performance helped begin the legendary striker’s relationship with Maccabi Tel Aviv at the tender age of 20.

Peretz began playing with the Yellow & Blue in 1973 and turned many scout’s heads due to his goal scoring prowess that eventually led to a stop in France with Strasbourg after seven season with Maccabi Tel Aviv. Following three years playing outside of Israel, Peretz returned to Maccabi for a second time.

Top moment

It’s not easy to choose just one match to focus on in Peretz’s Yellow & Blue career, however there is one contest that stands out above all others. In the Double Season of 1977, the squad was full of high caliber players such as Avi Cohen, Miko Belo, Benny Tabak and others. Maccabi faced off against Maccabi Netanya in the State Cup semifinal after defeating Beitar Netanya, Shimshon Tel Aviv and Hapoel Kfar Saba.

Over 22,000 spectators arrived at Ramat Gan Stadium for the State Cup semi finals and witnessed one of the largest margins of victories ever by the club in the semifinals. In the 5th minute, Vicki Peretz began the goal scoring onslaught by making good on a penalty kick early on, Yossi Yona drew Netanya even in the 34th minute but in the second half it was all Vicki.

Three straight goals by the striker in minutes 50, 69 and 72 gave the Yellow & Blue a commanding lead that was topped off by a Benny Tabak brace to help Maccabi to a 6:1 victory and a trip to the finals where they defeated Beitar Tel Aviv to lift the Cup.

Mark it down: Opening up against Kfar Saba, Derby on Matchday 5

Do you know the cliche, “Open up your Diaries”? Well now’s the time to do exactly that. The schedule for the first and second round of matches has been released and we’re ready to go. After a short break in the action the league will begin again on August 20th and the race for the championship will be underway.

Let’s take a look at some of the big matches. The Derby against Hapoel Tel Aviv will take place at home on Matchday 5 while Beitar Jerusalem will visit Netanya on Matchday 3. The Yellow & Blue will take a trip down to Turner Stadium and an encounter with Hapoel Beer Sheva on Matchday 8 and will host Maccabi Haifa the week before.

The Toto Cup Group Stage was also announced and Maccabi finds itself in Group B with Hapoel Raanana, Maccabi Petach Tikva, Hapoel Tel Aviv and Bnei Yehuda. The first match will be against Maccabi Petach Tikva at home.

After a dramatic draw in Kazakhstan, the Yellow & Blue host Kairat Almaty in the second leg of Europa League second round qualifying. The match will take place on Thursday July 21st at 20:00. Maccabi Tel Aviv fans may purchase tickets for the Upper West Side Stand, Sections 203-204, the E-Plus Section, the Silver Section and Section 105R.

On the wave: Dor Peretz’s goals for the new season

Dor Peretz, the Yellow & Blue midfielder has always looked forward to the chance of playing with the First Team and he’s done just that over the past few seasons. Year by year he has continued to grow both on and off of the pitch. In this exclusive interview find out what makes number 42 go and where he feels his place is as he continues on the path to stardom:

“There’s something in my game and the way I play. When I see my teammates in front of me, even if my play has been good or bad in a certain match, I’m always in it right until the end. It doesn’t matter what the situation is, I know how to lift myself up and I know how to encourage my teammates as well, especially when we are under pressure. I’m always there for my teammates and for myself. That’s why even at this age I’ve been able to pass the test of playing on the First Team.”

For someone who hasn’t even finished the army, you’ve won a championship, State Cup, Toto Cup, played for the Israel National Team and participated in six Champions League group stage matches:

“It’s pretty nice that I’ve been able to get so much done at such a young age. There’s a special feeling that surrounds a player from Maccabi Tel Aviv’s youth department that makes it up to the First Team. Being a homegrown player is very meaningful for the fans and the people around the club.”

On becoming a footballer:

“There was a big debate in the family as to what my path should be in becoming a footballer. My father and big brother who is still playing had careers in football and of course there’s also my agent and others who gave me tips and their thoughts about what I should do. Some wanted me to go and have the stage where I could play game in and game out. They felt I was a good player and at Maccabi Tel Aviv there are plenty of fine players and you never know if you’ll play even though you deserve the chance.

I believed in myself, I saw that my level was good enough for Maccabi Tel Aviv and that I deserved to play with the club. As time went by I saw that I was getting the chance to play and I’m happy with the decision that I made.”

On the amount of coaches the club had over the past few years:

“As a young player it felt very odd that coaches kept coming and going at Maccabi because usually they would put the youngsters to the side and see what the other players they had to work with could do. But I saw it as a chance to push myself and that gave me the drive to be the best that I could be and see what I really could do and that I deserved to play.

There are always talented players at Maccabi Tel Aviv who deserve and want to play. For me the challenge always continues. I’m always having to prove myself and fight for my spot and I hope that I’ll be there this season.”

Some of the veterans have left the club:

“Yoav, Carlos and Eran were a dominating force and real friends. They’ll be missed, but now is a chance for other players, including myself to step up and fill the void. I bring leadership and other good qualities on the pitch to help us all come together, things that can bring us more and more together as a team. Up until now I was more concentrated on myself as a young player, but today I see myself as part of the club whether I’m playing or not both on the pitch and in the lockerroom.

Goals for the new season:

“This year my goal is to show how I’ve improved. Last season I had a bunch of chances to score in crucial matches but I missed. I want to come into the season sharper, more focussed and accurate in front of the goal.”

“I’d like to have the opportunity to play in Europe or around the world. Right now I’m strengthening my standing at Maccabi Tel Aviv. Maccabi is my dream and down the road is Europe.”

Youth Players Visit Ichilov Hospital

Slowly but surely, the youth department is coming back to life as the players are beginning to come back from the break. Today, following a training session, they went on an important field trip to the Geriatric department at Ichilov Hospital to pay a visit to the patients.

The youngsters entertained the residents and spoke to them at length. Goalkeeping coach and educational consultant, Chen Abdu spoke to the Official Website: “This is just one of the many activities that we do at the youth department. Just as the guys are coming back from their break and returning to practice, there is nothing better to do than to give back to the community.”

Maccabi Tel Aviv are on their way back to Israel after claiming an away goal late in a 1:1 draw with Kairat Almaty. Orlando Sa and Avi Rikan spoke about the match and what they went through on the pitch as they begin preparations for next week’s second leg at the Netanya Stadium.

On the weather conditions:

“We knew it would be stormy but we made it through, we got a little wet but we’ll dry off and move on.”

About the match:

“We had a decent game with a bunch of chances but they are a dangerous club, with good technique and a bunch of experienced players that know what to do with the ball. We made it through the first match which is like the first half as we have another game at home and we have an away goal which is very important. We scored at the end of the match but we tried to score earlier. We’ll fly back now and get ready for next week.”

Yossi Benayoun’s goal:

“Arshavin and Yossi on the pitch together was definitely interesting and I’m happy that Yossi scored the important away goal at the end of the match, just like last match when he also scored for us. We have good players and a quality squad but we have to continue to work hard.”

It looked as if Maccabi was going to fall for the first time in 2016/17 but just before the final whistle Dor Micha started a wonderful play that ended with a goal by new recruit Yossi Benayoun. The Yellow & Blue drew with the Kazakhstan side 1:1 a week before the return leg in Israel.

Following the match, the midfielder spoke about the all important goal that he scored in the dying minutes of the match: “Every goal is important and it’s always fun to score, but the result is what is crucial. It was a difficult game against a quality side. It could have ended with a different result, but thankfully we scored in the last minute and it gives us a good starting point going into next week.”

Scoring an away goal:

“Anytime you score an away goal it’s good, but we also saw them have plenty of chances and if we would have given up another goal we would have paid the price. With our fans at home and a good feeling going into the game, we have to advance to the next round.”

On drawing again against Arshavin:

“I also played with Arshavin at Arsenal, but everyone remembers the classic 4:4 draw in which I scored the tying goal. I would have been happier had he not scored, but all things being said we had a good result here. We’ll have to work hard to get by them and into the third round.”
