Maccabi “Shachar” loses to Hapoel 3:2

Matchday 28 of the Toto Youth League pitted Maccabi against Hapoel in the second Tel Aviv Derby of the season at the Ramle Stadium. The young Yellow-and-Blue lost to Hapoel in the 90th minute of the team’s first encounter of the campaign as Ziv Arie’s charges looked to avenge the effect with just three games left. Oliel Peretz was unavailable as he was with the senior side and Haviv Ohayon was out due to an injury.

The Derby began with both side’s looking to impress. Maccabi had the first opportunity of the match when Eden Kartzev sent Guy Aviv a magnificent ball, but his effort was staved off for a corner kick. The home side continued to press with Kanichowsky, Dasa and Almog all testing their luck from outside of the box.

Finally, Maccabi struck in the 19th minute when Kartzev was pulled down in front of the goal good for an 11 meter spot kick. Tomer Altman stepped up and scored giving Arie’s side a 1:0 lead. However, Hapoel pulled even in the 33rd minute when Ibrahim Sfori beat keeper Hen Ozeri. 1:1 in the Derby.

If you thought that this was going to be the end of the scoring in the first half, you were mistaken as it didn’t take long for Almog to give Maccabi the 2:1 lead when his 25 meter effort beat the Hapoel keeper who was not in place to make the save. But with just three minutes left in the half, Hapoel drew even once again as Raz Itzhak scored from close in to head into the break at 2:2.

The second half began with the same players as both coaches opted to keep the same Starting XI on the pitch. As both clubs played a bit more tentatively, it took 20 minutes for Hapoel to break the deadlock as Eden Hershkowitz scored the Red’s third goal of the afternoon.

Arie made a double substitution looking to tie up the match as Omri Haramati and Yarin Sharabi were introduced for Or Dasa and Tomer Altman. With the contest nearing its end, Mahmoud Awesat and Amit Rosenboim also came on, but Maccabi “Shachar” couldn’t find the equalizer as they fell to Hapoel 3:2 in the final youth Derby of the season.

The Yellow Star, Football and Maccabi: The Legend of Yossef Merimovitch

Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day is when the Jewish People around the world bow their heads to remember those who perished throughout Europe during the early 1940’s. The relationship between the Maccabi Association and Maccabi Tel Aviv is one that will be forever intertwined due to the colors of the club’s jersey.

Yossef Merimovitch Z”TL of Blessed Memory, is personally responsible for the deep ties Maccabi has with the Holocaust. In 1943, Merimovitch, who at the time was one of the stars in Israel, heard about the atrocities that were going on and could not remain indifferent. The striker, who had been scoring goals at a tremendous clip for the side that played in Blue-and-White understood that the Jews of Europe were forced to wear a Yellow Star in order to differentiate them from the others. He asked that the club add yellow to their uniform in order to stand in unity with their brothers and sisters who were being persecuted.

The request didn’t fall on deaf ears and from that day on, yellow has been part of Maccabi and the connection between the club and the Holocaust will always remain as one and the same. This year, Yom HaShoah falls on the exact date that Merimovitch passed away, just five years ago.

Merimovitch began his career as a footballer with Maccabi “Michael”, and immediately impressed the coaches giving him his first start in a Maccabi Tel Aviv kit.

Football was always an important part of the Merimovitch household as his older bother Menachem (Mendele) starred for Maccabi Tel Aviv as well. Menachem represented Israel many times across the ocean and eventually settled in Australia with two other National Team players. Mendele passed away while fighting in the Australian Army at the beginning of World War II.

While his brother was in Australia, Yossele became one of the stars of Israeli football. As a player, Merimovitch won six Championships and six State Cups, a record that still stands. Following his playing career, Merimovitch had plenty of success as a coach winning a title and a State Cup over three different terms with the club. He also led the Israel National Team on two occasions while taking home the Asian Cup once.

Maccabi “Eli Fuchs” Wins League Title

Maccabi “Eli Fuchs” Tel Aviv, the club’s Under-16 side took home the League Title winning 5:1 over Hapoel Petach Tikva at Kiryat Shalom. Eyal Hen scored early on in the 2nd minute while Sa’ar Berami recorded a hat trick. Shachar Drucker put the final stamp on the match by scoring the fifth and final goal.

Eliezer Ben Aharon’s charges played consistently well all season long scoring 103 goals throughout the campaign and Wednesday with three Matchdays remaining the young Yellow-and-Blue were rewarded for their hard work and dedication.

Yellow-and-Blue Family: Special evening for Platinum Members

The traditional Platinum Members and professional staff match took place at Kiryat Shalom giving the participants a special opportunity to discuss business, sports, Maccabi and everything in between. Together with dinner, the Platinum Members had the chance to play on the same pitch as the club’s players, wear the identical kits from head to toe and score goals just like their stars.

However, the Platinum Members weren’t just up against any old team, they had to play the likes of Peter Bosz and Hendrie Kruzen who both played for the Dutch National Team in the World Cup, plus Nir Levin and Shira Uvarov who made sure to keep a cleansheet. Tibi: “The story is far from over”

Eitan Tibi, one of the Yellow-and-Blue central defenders shared his thoughts about his club’s 0:0 goalless draw. After three straight matches without a goal, Tibi discussed the Matchday 33 Championship Playoffs match and the issue that surrounded the club over the last little while:

“We come into every game looking to win and it’s unfortunate that we didn’t win the last three matches. The story is far from over, I believe that we still have a long fight right until the end. We will have to win every match and also count on Beer Sheva’s results.”

Defensive success but issues scoring:

“Sometimes there are days that the offense just doesn’t click and right now we are having a problem scoring.”

Tactics:

“I think the first 30 minutes we didn’t play as well as could and control the match. But after that we were able to dictate the pace of the game. We have to be ready to play any type of formation and we changed it up a bit where we started to create more chances. However we just weren’t able to score.”

Chance to win the title:

“Let’s wait until the end of the year and see what will be. We aren’t crowning anyone Chamions and we aren’t eulogizing anyone just yet.”

The Rajikovic situation being removed only 2 hours prior to kick off:

“As footballers we have to be ready for any type of situation and we came into the match with the goal of winning the game. Unfortunately it just didn’t happen.”

Lack of scoring:

“Eran has had an incredible year and his statistics speak for themselves. It’s too bad over the last three matches both Eran and every other player haven’t been able to score.”

I wining the title:

“It may be a sporting disaster but it’s not a natural disaster and I believe that the fight still isn’t over.”

Bosz: “A disappointing result”

The Yellow-and-Blue boss, Peter Bosz commented on his side’s third 0:0 draw in a row, this time at home against first place side Hapoel Beer Sheva. Maccabi find themselves three points out of first place with there matches to go:

“Disappointing result. Today we didn’t start well and we didn’t pressure well like we are used to. It may have been because of Beer Sheva and their quality. I was a bit surprised that even though we didn’t start well we had the best chances. The second half we played well, but in order to win you must score and we haven’t.”

Defense and offense:

“We defend with the whole team and the same is true when you score. You need the whole team. You can’t put your finger on one player. You have to look at the whole team.”

Chances to win the title:

“We have three games to go. I remember Barcelona when they won the championship on the last day. We don’t have the luxury of controlling our own destiny. We will have to see what Beer Sheva does and we must win out.”

The Rajikovic situation:

“I came here to Israel and I’ve had many experiences. At 18:19 I received the news that Rajikovic could play. I’m not used to these types of things go on but that’s what it is.”

Changing up tactics:

“I was confident that I could play with 3 defenders, but after 15 minutes I changed back to 4. I had Dor Peretz in the lineup and he gave me flexibility to do this.”

Coming to coach in Israel:

“I knew the numbers that Maccabi had and since I’m here and the club hasn’t lost one game. We have scored many goals and we’ve only lost 3 league games all season. But we are up against a team called Beer Sheva who are very good. I’m disappointed but this is what it is.”

Message to the team following the match:

“Heads up for the last three games and we have a chance if we win these matches. Maccabi has to always try to be the champion. The team played in the Champions League this year and we will play in a Cup final. If we lose one championship out of four years it is disappointing because I am a sportsman.”

Not getting the most out of the foreign players:

“I look at who are the best players and I don’t look if they are foreigners or not. I want to play with my best players, but Nosa has been injured.”

Maccabi draw 0-0 with Beer Sheva

The Yellow-and-Blue drew their third straight league match 0:0 after having the majority of opportunities throughout the contest.

Head Coach Peter Bosz had Predrag Rajikovic at his services after much concern that he would be unavailable due to the Israel Football Association ruling handed down following last Matchday against Bnei Sakhnin. Captain Eran Zahavi, Barak Itzhaki, Tal Ben Chaim and Dor Micha shored up the attack with midfielders Haris Medunjanin and Gal Alberman playing just behind them. A defensive quartet of Eli Dasa, Carlos Garcia, Eitan Tibi and Dor Peretz played in front of the Serbian keeper as Maccabi looked to move into first place due to a better goal differential.

With an electric atmosphere at Bloomfield, the match kicked off with the fans hitting the highest of decibels in the packed stands. Ovidiu Huban had the first chance of the match from long range, but Rajikovic easily stopped the midfielder’s effort from 20 meters out early on in the 6th minute. Maccabi’s opening salvo of the evening came in the 14th minute off of a tremendous opportunity by Zahavi. The Captain took a brilliant Medunjanin pass into the box but Beer Sheva keeper Dudu Goresh sent the ball out for a corner kick to keep the match goalless after the first quarter hour.

As the match continued with end to end action, Micha had a chance from in close on the left side but Goresh easily saved the ball in the 21st minute. Just two minutes later, Beer Sheva had a magnificent opprotunity to take the lead but Rajikovic was up to the task and knocked away Nwakaeme’s header.

With the match heading into the 30th minute, Eli Dasa cut into the Beer Sheva box from the right side and handed the ball off to Itzhaki who couldn’t find a way to put it past Goresh with Ben Biton clearing the ball to safety. Ten minutes later, Tal Ben Chaim unleashed a left footed scorcher from the right side of the box but his effort just went over the bar and out as the half ended deadlocked at 0:0.

Peter Bosz opened the second half with his first substitute of the match introducing Orlando Sa for Itzhaki looking to ignite his stagnant offense. After the visitors applied pressure to begin the half, Medunjanin took a low shot that just went by the left post and out to keep the scoreline as is in the 50th minute. Zahavi who had been handcuffed all night by Beer Sheva’s stifling defense took a scintillating shot from the top of the box but his effort went over the bar.

The Yellow-and-Blue boss made his second substitute of the evening in the 61st minute bringing on Shlomi Azulay for Alberman in search of a goal. Ben Chaim would almost find that goal as he slithered past the Beer Sheva defense only to find an awaiting Goresh ready to collect his chance.

Sa and Zahavi each couldn’t find a way to put the ball in the goal as both their opportunities missed wide while a Medunjanin free kick from 30 meters out also didn’t find its mark as the match remained scoreless in the 76th minute. As the match hit the 81st minute Bosz made his final substitution of the match introducing Eden Ben Basat for Tal Ben Chaim.

It didn’t take long for Ben Basat to make an impact as number 9 who hadn’t played in some time sent a perfect cross into the box but couldn’t find any Yellow-and-Blue jerseys to head it into the goal behind Goresh as the Beer Sheva keeper collected the ball. With the clock running out of time Azulay sent a curler into the box but that went over the bar as well.

As the final whistle sounded, Maccabi looked ahead to next week’s Matchday 34 contest against Hapoel Raanana at the Netanya Stadium in hopes of cutting Beer Sheva’s lead.
