Sofer: “The players deserve a tremendous amount of credit”

The year began with Erez Belfer on the sidelines, however after his departure, Amir Sofer who was part of Ran Elias’s staff replaced him and went on to win the Championship.

Sofer didn’t hide his excitement after winning and told the Official Club Website: “It’s never easy to join a team in the middle of the year, but Erez left a wonderful side for me to take care of. Since I was part of Ran Elias’s staff it was also a bit easier for me to get into the swing of things very quickly. I’m not going to lie, I had some concern about taking over the squad in the middle of the season, but thankfully everything went perfectly. I joined a terrific team that continued on its way and built on its success prior to my arrival.”

How the players reacted to the change:

“The players deserve a tremendous amount of credit. The squad not only changed its coach but also some of the players during the course of the season and they were able to handle it. They put in a tremendous amount of effort and motivation from practice to practice and from Saturday to Saturday. The players continue to learn and improve and you can see it on the pitch.”

The club’s direction:

“The most important thing that we want the players to understand is that wins and points aren’t at the top of the list of items that we are interested in, but rather how the players stand by the principles and standards of the club. Once they do that then the results will come. The staff hasn’t taken their foot off of the gas all year long and that’s also why we’ve won so many matches. The key to victory is counting to adhere to the principles and standards of the club during the actual games and at practice.”

The remaining matches this season:

“We’ve told the players that we are going to continue to practice and work hard until the final match. Our goals haven’t changed one bit and the fact that the two teams will be combined next season isn’t a major concern. There are plenty of things going on behind the scenes to ensure that the two sides come together as one club smoothly. The bottom line for us is that this is not a big deal.”

His personal feelings after joining the Youth Department:

“Personally, the club has given me a lot of confidence and it’s a tremendous amount of fun. Every little detail is examined at Maccabi and that’s what brings in the results. It’s an amazing experience to work here and I’m already hungry to begin next season.”

Beitar Tubruk 0:2 Maccabi “Shachar” Tel Aviv

The young Yellow-and-Blue fell to Tubruk in Netanya yesterday afternoon. Maccabi “Shachar”’s counterparts scored an early goal and held off the visitors while scoring a late insurance marker to collect the three point just one week prior to the Tel Aviv Derby next Matchday.

The Tel Aviv Derby that took place at Kiryat Shalom didn’t yield any goals as Ori Uzan’s side will continue to lead the league with a five-point advantage over the Reds with only 9 points left in the bank.

Maccabi “Eli Fuchs” Tel Aviv 4:3 Hapoel “Yoram” Rishon Le’Zion

One of the most interesting matches of the day took place at the Under-16 level as Maccabi “Eli Fuchs” looked to get back onto the winning track after falling in the State Cup final. Eliezer Ben Aharon’s side gave up an early goal but a pair of goals by Amit Mordechaev and Junus Gabarin gave the home team the lead at the break. Rishon drew even in the second half but Gil Rachimi and Eyal Ron scored to give the young Yellow-and-Blue the win and a chance to celebrate the league title next Matchday.

Maccabi “Goldscheinfeld” Haifa 0:2 Maccabi “Eldad” Tel Aviv

The Under-15 club earned the 2015/16 League Championship after defeating the Haifa Greens away in the Carmel. The team which is co-coached by Amir Sofer and Ran Elias led the whole season and were crowned Champs with three Matchdays left in the season.

The last month of the campaign is upon us, and what a month we have for you. Take out your pens and start marking your calendars up. Let’s go:

May 2 – Matchday 33: Maccabi Tel Aviv – Hapoel Beer Sheva, 20:55, Bloomfield (LIVE from the Stadium)

Only 3-points separate Maccabi from table leaders Hapoel Beer Sheva who will visit the defending champs. The tension and pressure is peaking but #WEAREMACCABI. Win and first place will belong to the Yellow-and-Blue due to a better goal differential. A draw and the battle will continue for another three Matchdays. Lose? We’re not going to consider that. Meanwhile, don’t be left behind and make sure you change your profile picture on social networks to “We are Maccabi”.

May 9 – Matchday 34: Hapoel Raanana – Maccabi Tel Aviv, 20:55, Netanya Stadium

The Captain, Eran Zahavi said: “We will battle until the final whistle.” Maccabi will head to Netanya and face Raanana as the match kicks off at the same time as the Hapoel Beer Sheva vs. Beitar Jerusalem match.

May 14 – Matchday 35: Beitar Jerusalem – Maccabi Tel Aviv, Teddy Stadium (Date & Time TBD)

Just one round before the final Matchday, Peter Bosz’s charges will head to the Capital city for a tough away tilt at Teddy Stadium, the same facility the Yellow-and-Blue will take on Maccabi Haifa in the Israel State Cup Final. The last time these two sides met in Jerusalem the match ended in 2:2 draw and by looking at the past contests between the two sides we’re certain of one thing; there most definitely will be goals.

May 21 – Matchday 36: Maccabi Tel Aviv – Maccabi Haifa, Bloomfield Stadium, (Date & Time TBD)

Will the season’s photo finish come down to the last Matchday? Just three days before the State Cup final between the two clubs, Maccabi will hosts the Greens from Haifa in a match that may decide the title.

May 24 – Israel State Cup Final 2016: Maccabi Tel Aviv – Maccabi Haifa, Teddy Stadium (Time TBD)

The fans will make their way in droves to Jerusalem for the final stage of the season and a chance to defend their State Cup Title. This will be the first time in 15 years that the two will kick off against each other in the final of this competition. The last time ended in a Yellow-and-Blue penalty shootout victory. How will it end this time? We can only think of one way.

Is that enough for you? Don’t close your day planners just yet because you know that we love surprises and we will surely have some this coming month. Along with choosing the great moments of the season including the player and goal of the year there will be much, much more. So just as Zahavi said: “If anyone thinks this race is over, they’re mistaken.”

Championship Goal: Maccabi downs Beit Shean 1-0, Shukanov scores in the 95th minute

April 1995. Matchday 26 of the Leumit League as Maccabi Tel Aviv faced Hapoel Beit Shean on a Saturday afternoon. Elisha Levy’s club was in trouble and looked to be heading for relegation but still had one goal in mind as they visited the center of country-to return home with a point. On the other side of the pitch, Avram Grant’s Yellow-and-Blue were in search of three points to maintain their position atop of the league table. Avi Nimni had been sent off the prior week in a 2:1 win over Hapoel Haifa and would be unavailable for Grant’s side.

Maccabi looked dangerous from the outset and Alon Brumer hit the bar after a poor goal kick by keeper Meir Cohen. The Beit Shean shot stopper then hurt his shoulder and needed to be replaced in the first half by youngster Maman. The Yellow-and-Blue looked to pounce on the opportunity and poured on the pressure as Noam Shoham’s scintillating effort met the post as the two sides ended the first half goalless.

Maccabi continued to press forward in the second half but Maman stood his ground and kept his clean sheet intact. Shukanov had a marvelous opportunity to score at the beginning of the half after taking a brilliant cross by Ron Nachman. However, Maman was in the right place at the right time to take away the ball from the Yellow-and-Blue midfielder.

Eli Drikes also couldn’t find the back of the Beit Shean goal as he turned in the box and sliced the ball at the keeper who blocked the shot with his fingertips.

The match referee, Danny Koren saw how the Beit Shean players had been killing time and added 6 minutes which was just enough for Maccabi to find the winner. In the 95th minute, Yuri Shukanov took the ball at midfield, advanced 20 meters and unleashed a winner shot right towards the comer of the goal as Maman couldn’t find a way to stop the ball from going in. Without a doubt the victory was one of the most important wins for Maccabi Tel Aviv that season and proved to be one of the dramatic matches of the campaign.

Maccabi “Shachar” fall to Tubruk 2-0

Maccabi “Shachar” visited Netanya to kick off against Beitar Tubruk on Matchday 26 of the Toto League. Idan Yogev and Guy Aviv were unavailable due to injury while Oliel Peretz and Haviv Ohayon were with the First Team leaving the coach a short bench for Saturday afternoon’s matchup.

The young Yellow-and-Blue didn’t start the match off well as they gave up an early goal off of a corner kick after an Amir Shapira foul. Eitan Ratzon headed the ball behind Ozeri to give the hosts a 1:0 lead after less than ten minutes in Netanya. Maccabi maintained possession throughout the half but couldn’t find an equalizer as they went into the break down by one.

Coach Arie made a pair of substitutes to begin the second half as Eylon Almog and Eden Kartzev took Prince Thomas and Mahmoud Awesat’s places on the pitch. However, the match took an aggressive turn and coupled with a tough pitch, the Under-19 side had a rough time finding a goal of their own and allowed the Tubruk players threaten the Yellow-and-Blue goal in search of an insurance marker.

Almog gave Maccabi “Shachar” a bit of hope but his header just went wide of the post while Lazar Durovic came in to play striker but proved to be ineffective. As the match neared the end, Tubruk added to their lead as the contest ended in a disappointing 2:0 loss.

Maccabi “Shachar” defeats Hapoel Raanana 1-0

With their State Cup run ended and first place out of reach, the Ziv Arie’s club continued to introduce some of the younger player into the squad. Hen Ozeri started in goal as Haviv Ohayon trained with the senior side while Prince Thomas was also given a Starting XI opportunity against Hapoel Raanana.

Just like the last time these two sides met, Maccabi controlled the tempo of the match but had a tough time breaking through the stingy Raanana defense. Kanichowsky and Awesat both had chances but couldn’t find the back of the goal as the clubs went into the break goalless.

The second half mirrored the first until Yarin Sharabi came charging down the right side of the pitch and crossed the ball to Eden Kartzev who headed the ball off the post and into the Raanana goal. A beauty of a goal and an assist from two players who in fact could still be playing for the Under-17 club as Maccabi picked up the 3-points and the victory.

Ziv Arie’s charges have put together two wins in a row and will look to add to their streak. On Saturday the Yellow-and-Blue will play away at Tubruk and will try to cement their second place position.

Derby! Ori Uzan and Leon Asraf’s Under-17 side will host their city rivals in Red. The young Yellow-and-Blue lead their league with a 5-point advantage over the same Hapoel Tel Aviv. A win and Maccabi will be in control with four matches remaining in the season.

The Yellow-and-Blue had a very busy month of April. Five matches, one of which was the State Cup Semifinal. Nine goals were scored as Eran Zahavi, Tal Ben Chaim and Haris Medunjanin were responsible for seven of them.

Ben Chaim: HISENSE April Player of the Month

For the first time this season, winger Tal Ben Chaim picked up the HISENSE Player of the Month award garnering the most Maccabi FIRST Member’s votes. We’ll soon get to the details of how you can win a 32″ HISENSE TV, but first let’s take a look at the numbers.

40% of Maccabi FIRST Members voted for Ben Chaim to win April’s award. This was an impressive number considering the Captain, Eran Zahavi broke the league’s single season goal scoring record as he took 16% of the vote. Barak Itzhaki finished in 3rd place with 15%.
