Mirror, mirror on the wall

The best day of the year is Derby day.

That’s a surprising statement and it’s the truth. How am I going to spend the time until the match, brush my teeth thinking about all of the Tifo in section 11, driving in my car listening to Maccabi music, going to work and have people bother me when I’m flying high watching Zahavi’s goal in the 3:2 Derby. I’m counting the hours and the minutes until I can get to the fabled old stadium in Jaffa.

Dusk descends and then nightfall but everything is ready my mother tells me, three MTA__1396304320__MG_0226_(Medium)hours before kickoff the TV goes on. The Derby officially gets underway and at the moment I say, enough, I’m getting ready and I’m heading to Bloomfield with my scarf and lucky jersey, section 11 here I come.

I get to the streets of Jaffa and I look around, I see the shadows and I hear the voices, all of Jaffa is Yellow-and-Blue. I’m dying to get out of my car to smell the surroundings and feel the atmosphere. Buy a falafel, light a cigarette to relax and take a deep breath, Yalla Derby as I walk slowly towards the stands listening to the crowd already straining their voices as I walk up the magical stairs.

Quiet, silence and darkness, you’re alone in the friendly confines of Bloomfield where there are hundreds of things going on in the stadium within seconds. The lush green pitch in all of its beauty is before me and suddenly my ears perk up, I lift my hands and hold my scarf high. I didn’t come to a concert, I came to show off my religion, the religion I love, the religion of Yellow-and-Blue. I came to prove who is the most beautiful in the city, the excitement is in the air and I’m dying for the match to begin. Who am I you ask? I am Maccabi who comes to win every match, at every stadium with all of my strength and all of my might. “Not Yet” the fans say in stands. Soon. The referee blows his whistle…to be continued Saturday night…

I understand the importance of the Derby

The first Ligat “Winner” League Derby of the season is here. This Saturday evening October 31, 18:00 Maccabi Tel Aviv will visit Hapoel on Matchday Nine. The Yellow-and-Blue will come into the match after playing two games already this week against Beitar Jerusalem and Bnei Yehuda in the Toto Cup. Just before the match Head Coach Slavisa Jokanovic spoke about the importance of the Derby:nirkeidar-88

“The Toto Cup match will have no affect on the game Saturday night. Now we are going to play the Big Derby and it doesn’t make a difference where we are on the table. I understand the importance of the Derby to the supporters, the players and for me even more so. This is the first really important Derby for the club, even more
crucial than the Toto Cup one.”

How the match may develop:

“We have to be prepared for the match against Hapoel and I’m not going to make many changes. We have to continue on the same path we started when we played other games over the past few months. It’s never good to lose, but it happens. We didn’t do enough against Beitar and now my team realizes what we need to do. I’m concentrating on my work on the pitch and not with other things that are going on.”

On his previous Derby experience as a player and coach:

“I played and coached in the big Serbian Derby between Partizan and Red Star. But regardless we are in a different place, a different time and my responsibility as a coach is to see that Maccabi wins this game.”

The importance of the match to the fans:

“I understand the fan’s sentiments and how important the Derby is for the supporters this coming Saturday. It’s 11 against 11. We have to play the best we can in order to win the game.”

Ben Harush-The Derby’s very important

Omri Ben Harush, one of the veteran Yellow-and-Blue defenders had a chance to play with a number of charges from the youth team against Bnei Yehuda. He spoke about their performance, Maccabi’s deep squad and looked forward to the Derby on Saturday night against Hapoel Tel Aviv:

“The Toto Cup is known for giving a chance to the younger players from the youth squad to play and see what they have to offer and what the future has in store. The match didn’t go the way we wanted today but we saw a number of youngsters that played well who will continue to work hard to reach the next level.”

On having many players on the team:

“We have a deep squad and the coach has to use the players he has and give them a chance to play as well. Again, we have many players who can play on any given day and the coach has to make sure that we are all in game shape.”

The composition of the squad:

“The lineup we played with was not what we would usually play, but that’s what the coach decided to do today. We always play to win every match but today it didn’t happen.”

On Saturday’s Derby:

“The Derby’s a very important game for us and we will come very prepared for the challenge and get the best result that we can. We will be very vigilant against Hapoel and even though we may be higher on the table this doesn’t mean anything in a Derby. We’ll come ready to play and take the points.”

Jokanovic: “Happy we played as a team”

Maccabi Tel Aviv were eliminated from the Toto Cup Tournament after falling to Bnei Yehuda 3:1, away at Bloomfield Stadium. The Yellow-and-Blue played with primarily a youth squad for the match, starting four players from the Under-21 side plus another four who rounded out the team for the match. The coach, Slavisa jokanovich, explained his reasoning following the game and spoke about how the team played:

4Z6A4860“Bnei Yehuda scored an easy goal early on in the game and our opponent was better than us, however we did play as a team. In the second half it was difficult for us to come back and change the situation we were already in. It’s our obligation to play hard but the team is just not built for four competitions. The schedule is tight and it’s not normal to play two matches within 48 hours”.

“I’m not content with the result but I am happy that we played as a team and we did many things on the pitch that showed this. I played with a number of youth players and they were commendable, the kids did a fine job. We moved around a few players into different roles but like I said before we played positively and together as a team.”

Maccabi’s Toto Cup Campaign ends

Due to Maccabi Tel Aviv’s packed schedule as they play in various competitions, Head Coach Slavisa Jokanovic chose to go with a squad laden with youth players and gave Gaby Kanichowsky and Dor Galili their first starts for the big team. Joining them on the pitch was 17-year old ‘keeper Haviv Ohayon and Dan Glazer who ply their trade for the Under-19 side as well.

Four veterans rounded out the defense in Yuval Shpungin, Omri Ben Harush, Oz Raly and Yoav Ziv serving as the captain. Oz Raly, Dor Micha and Shlomi Azulay joined Galili in the midfield while Eden Ben Basat played next to Kanichowsky up top. Later in the match Tomer Altman, Mahmoud Alawesat, Maxim Grechkin and Or Dasa would make their debuts with the parent club. The first half didn’t start as planned for the Yellow-and-Blue with Bnei Yehuda taking a 2:0 lead by the 25th minute on goals by Almog Bozaglo and Amir Agaiev. The first goal came off of a Pedro Galvan blistering shot that was mishandled by Ohayon allowing Bozaglo the easy score while the second goal was assisted by Jude Nworuh after goalscorer Agaiev’s strike hit off of the right post. The second half saw an inspired Maccabi Tel Aviv come out onto the pitch looking to score a pair of goals and even up the match.

Shlomi Azulay’s 47th minute chance was blocked by Bnei Yehuda ‘keeper Dele Aiyenugba for a corner kick as the visitors continued to press for a goal. However, it was Bnei Yehuda who would score first as Ohad Kadosi pounced on his own rebound in the 63rd minute to give the home side a 3:0 lead. Eden Ben Basat pulled one back in the 89th minute on a beautiful pass from Yoav Ziv, but it was too little too late as Maccabi would be knocked out of the Toto Cup for 2015/16.

שלומי אזולאי לקראת המשחק נגד בני יהודה
