An emotional candle lighting in wartime

Maccabi Tel Aviv FC held this evening (Monday) a candle lighting ceremony on the fifth Hannuka night at Bloomfield stadium. This year the Maccabi tradition had a different atmosphere in the wake of the war Israel is currently experiencing. Around 300 family members of fans who were murdered, killed in action, taken hostage, wounded or evacuated following the deadly terrorist attack of October 7th.

Maccabi’s CEO, Ben Mansford and club captain, Sheran Yeini, spoke on behalf the club while Yaron Dushi whose son Rotem Dushi was killed in action, Dikla Shimriz whose son Alon is still held hostage in Gaza – all delivered emotional speeches.

Israeli TV host, actor, and Maccabi fan, Guy Zu-Aretz, whose nephew Ilay, was murdered at the SuperNova party together with his close friends Yonatan Zeidman and Liam Shrem, performed some songs. Besides the entire first team playing and coaching staff, club employees, members of Ahim Lasemel and Maccabi Fanatics were all in attendance.

“The events of 7 October will forever be cast in darkness and a cloud may remain until every hostage and soldier are back home” Ben Mansford said, “Last week, I was fortunate to spend time with Gal and Tal Goldstein. Despite all that they had been through, it was immensely uplifting to hear that one of Gal’s first requests to his waiting Israeli soldier was to know the Maccabi results against Zorya. We should take that remarkable spirit into the coming months. We are in a uniquely special place to continue to support all those affected by the 7 October and to bring light to those who need it the most.”

Club captain, Sheran Yeini addressed the families and said: “We know you have all suffered and still suffering in a way which is indescribable. Hanukkah is the festival of lights, and we are obliged to make you happy in any possible way you could think of. To the families of the hostages, I can say that if there is any way in which we can assist in any way or influence in any way we are here. If you may think of a kid who needs help a family, a kibbutz that needs restoring, a shoulder to lean on or someone to talk to – we are here. We are all available and will and make you as happy as we possibly can. Maccabi Tel Aviv is a family and now you are all part of the family.”

Yaron Dushi, whose son Rotem (20) was killed in action on October 7th shared his story: “Rotem was a die-hard Maccabi fan, with a combat soldier’s season ticket who even managed to attend the final two matches before the black sabbath. I am standing here on behalf of the yellow families and would like to thank this amazing and glorious club. From the first moment, you put your arm around us and knew to send players and representatives. At the Shiva’a we had many people who came to console but at the pinnacle of our excitement was the Deputy CEO, Daniel Levy and Dor Peretz walked in. When Dor walked through the door, we told him how Rotem would have been delighted to meet him. He was so humble, modest, with so much emotions and empathy. We learned to know that Maccabi is club that hugs you, embraces you and gives you a bit of light during our darkest period. We were really touched when you invited us to light the Hanukka candles and shed a light on every one of the fans who are not with us today. We would like to wish a speedy recovery to those wounded and hope that the hostages return to us soon. Yalla Maccabi, Am Ysrael Chai.”

Dikla Shamriz, the mother of Alon who was abducted from kibbutz Kfar Aza on October 7th and has been held hostage in Gaza since: “Our Alon has been held hostage for 66 days by Hamas. Sixty six days, of endless longing. Maccabi is part of us and we are part of the Maccabi family. We are asking you (the players) every time you walk onto the pitch to remember that part of everyone’s family is still there. When you get a chance to talk to influential people or people that could influence – do it. Just raise the topic to ensure that everyone knows that there are kids who are still held hostage. We are all playing for his speedy return, that everyone would return, and that he will get to see you all together with his brothers at his second home here in Bloomfield”.

We will remember forever: Gal Danguri RIP

Our beloved Gal,

You were taken from us at the age of 23 as all you did was to go to a party with your closest mates.

You were a charming and loved child who grew-up to be a man amongst men; charismatic, smiling, kind and generous with a heart of gold. You used to light-up the room when you entered as your presence was impossible to be ignored. You were a man who magnetized everyone who came by you, gathered and kept your friends along the way. Boyhood friends, fellow mates from your military service, from football and work.

You had a seven-year-long relationship with the charming, Coral, as you moved in with each other at the unit you loved and cultivated so nicely. You raised the cute dog Kika that you brought together, as we all waited for your marriage proposal.

You completed your military service as a Golanchik and soldier in the 51st Battalion of the Golani brigade. You finished your big trip around the world, as we all thought that the dangers were over, and we could all relax. But then you decided to go to that damned party.

You had so many plans and we have no doubt that you would have achieve them all. You worked at Harel Insurance and as usual you magnetized everyone to you there as well. You enrolled for a bachelor’s degree in insurance as your professional path was undoubtedly in that field.

Maccabi Tel Aviv was your first and biggest love with your father Yaniv and uncle Hanan introducing you almost at berth. It was your pastime with dad, a father and son time. You both had a season ticket for Gate 13, while in your childhood you spent many a year at Gate 11 with your childhood mate Gal Shahak. We would drive you to Bloomfield Netanya and even Kiryat Shalom to prepare banners for matches, until you received your driving license and began traveling with dad or by yourself. We laughed so much when you were caught on camera amongst the fans during matches. There is no family event where the microphone wasn’t in your possession as it always came to Maccabi’s songs.

Our loved one, we honor your memory in so many ways but all we want is to have you here with us as we miss you so much. We all miss you so much.

Rest in peace in our life and soul, thank you for 23 years of love and happiness.

We will remember you forever ❤️

Shualei Kfar Aza feature in Kibbutzim tourney

In the aftermath of the horrific October 7th Hamas massacre on their kibbutz Kfar Aza, which is one of the hardest hit communities, Shualei Kfar Aza uses football to try and find some comfort and even made a comeback to playing the beautiful game. The players from the kibbutz which was one of the many Israeli communities devastated by the October 7 Hamas massacre, lost teammates, family members and friends. On Friday however, they all met for a team activity that unites the entire kibbutz which sits five kilometers east of the Gaza strip, was infiltrated by around 70 terrorists and had more than 70 members murdered with around 20 taken hostage.

The Shualim (Foxes) football team participated in the first communal activity organized by The Sha’ar HaNegev Regional Council since 7.10 as they played in the traditional Kibbutzim football tournament which was hosted in Kfar Sava.

The foxes, who are the Regional Council’s reigning champions lined-up alongside 11 other kibbutzim before comfortably winning their group. A defeat in the quarter finals at the end of a penalty shoot-out surprisingly ended their run in the regional tournament which was highlighted by the support they received from the fans, the Maccabi Tel Aviv Foundation and sponsor ISRAEL CANADA.

Team captain, Idan Berman whose two brothers Ziv and Gali are held hostage in Gaza, said: “It is not even regarded as a little dent, feels like a defeat in the Toto Cup. We fielded some youngsters and are just happy to be here and meet everyone. Football, the togetherness and the support we receive just gives us a bit of light in these difficult dark times we are all experiencing.”

Golasa and Mishpati’s emotional visit

The Maccabi Tel Aviv FC Foundation continued its’ community work during the war in the South and North of Israel as this week Eyal Golasa and Roi Mishpati visited soldiers who were injured in action.

Golasa and Mishpati visited the Beilnson hospital at Rabin Medical center and met with Omer and Roei who are soldiers from the same military unit and friends from their national service. The duo went into Gaza together, fought side by side and were injured during battle. During the visit, the two soldiers handed Golasa a set of Tefillin they carried with them throughout their duty in Gaza and despite the fierce fighting and injuries, carried it back from the battlefield.

We also met with Yitzhak, a soldier from a combat unit who made Aliya from Chicago as part of Garin Tzabar – a program that facilitates service in the IDF with a support system for Israelis and diaspora Jews who do not have parents in Israel. The October 7th ‘Black Sabbath’ caught Yitzhak in Chicago where he spent a short holiday with his family, but he was quick to hop on a plane and report for duty. Finally we visited Itamar, a Maccabi fan from Gate 11 who was also injured during in the Gaza strip. Golasa and Mishpati visited Itamar and presented him with a match-worn shirt from the victory over Zorya in the Conference League.
