Maccabi beat Sakhnin 4-0
Preview
Maccabi arrived at the municipal stadium in Acco for the MD10 WINNER League match away to Bnei Sakhnin with a bid to bounce back from the recent result and return to winning ways. Zarko Lazetic’s side which suffered a 5-0 defeat away to Ajax in the Europa League on Thursday, lost their last four outings. A victory against in-form Sakhnin that ended Beitar Jerusalem’s 6-match unbeaten run, will send Maccabi into the international break on a high.
Lazetic made several changes from side that lost in Amsterdam as Raz Shlomo and Nemanja Stojic lined-up as the two central defenders. Stav Lemkin on the right and Sagiv Jehezkel on the left completed Maccabi’s back-four in front of goalkeeper Roi Mishpati. Joris van Overeem returned to the anchorman role while Gabi Kanichowsky captained the side while Wessley Patati made his second league start to complete the midfield trio. Osher Davida returned to the squad after serving his one-match-touchline ban and was positioned on one wing with Henry Addo on the opposite flank. Dor Turgeman led the line aiming to add to his tally of 3 league goals and 7 in all competitions this season.
Alongside goalkeeper Simon Sluga, Lazetic named Idan Nachias, Eran Zahavi, Elad Madmon, Ofir Davidzada, Issouf Sissokho, Hisham Layous, Ido Shahar and Dor Peretz.

First Half
With a strange backdrop of an empty Akko stadium, the birds on the roof of the main stand were the only noise competing with the players on the pitch. Wessley Patati who has yet to open his account, looked sharp in the opening stages as his shot was spilled by Mohamad Abu Nil for a corner. Several minutes later, the Brazilian winger came closer as his shot struck the base of the post. In the 23rd minute Patati was rewarded for his efforts as the 21-year-old’s shot come cross from the corner of the area eluded everyone including Abu Nil to open the score.

Maccabi doubled their lead six minutes later as Gabi Kanichowsky found himself with time and space on the right to find Dor Turgeman with an accurate pass before the striker swept the ball home.
Roi Mishpati was drawn into the action on 39 as a Mathew Cudjoe left foot drive forced Maccabi’s keeper to stretch himself and punch the ball out.

Second Half
With no changes at the after the break, Maccabi began the second half just like they did with the first pressing Sakhnin right from the off. Two minutes after the restart Maccabi increased the lead to three at the end of a spectacular team effort. Patati picked the ball deep inside Maccabi’s half and charged towards the halfway line before releasing Osher Davida down the left flank. Davida burst forward before squaring to Turgeman who slipped the ball to Henry Addo. The Ghanian still had his work cut out as he took the ball around the keeper and fired home his debut league goal and third in all competitions,
Five minutes after the hour mark, Lazetic, made a triple substitution as Sagiv Jehezkel, Kanichowsky and Davida all bowed out and were replaced by Ofir Davidzada, Issouf Sissokho and Dor Peretz. Lazetic was dismissed by referee Yigal Frid who booked him twice in the space of a minute for dissent on 69. In the 70th minute Maccabi scored the fourth from the unlikeliest of sources as Turgeman’s pressure on Abu Nil earned him the ball before the striker squared for Joris van Overeem. The 30-year-old Dutch born midfielder who hasn’t scored a goal since joining Maccabi in the summer of 2022 fired home to mark his 85th appearance for the club with a goal. Eran Zahavi and Hisham Layous replaced Addo and Turgeman for the closing stages as Maccabi completed their five substitutions in the 74th minute..
Peretz in the final second: 5 goals against Sakhnin
Watch: Ben Mansford following Amsterdam incidents
Lazetic: “I have more motivation at tough moments”
Maccabi landed. Mansford: “We are devastated”
Maccabi Tel Aviv landed this afternoon in Israel after a night where fans were violently attacked after returning from the Europa League match against Ajax at the Johan Cruyff arena in Amsterdam.
From the early hours of Friday, the Club was in direct contact wit the Foreign Ministry, the Israeli Embassy, the Sports and Culture Ministry, the National Security Council, and the Israel Football Association. During the day, the Club was updated that all the fans who were admitted to hospital to receive treatment for their injuries, were released and that contact was established with those who were out of reach during the night.
The owner Mitch Goldhar who arrived in Amsterdam to be with the team for the match against Ajax, spent the day meeting fans at their hotels, enquiring of their condition and well-being.
Maccabi’s CEO, Ben Mansford, said after the team landed: “Obviously we are absolutely devastated. We get on that plane on Wednesday to play a game of football and the reason why you are all at the airport is not because of a game of football. Thank god we believe that all of our fans were accounted for, we think there is a strong chance that all of them have been released from hospitals. Whilst that is great news compared to the news we had at 2-3 in the morning, I will feel that everyone at Maccabi Tel Aviv joins us – when everyone who traveled to Amsterdam to watch that game is back home safe in Israel.”
“Football has been my professional career and at times, risk elements from both teams are fine with each other. This was not connected to football and that is the reason why you are all here to report. Lots of people went to watch a football game and to support Maccabi Tel Aviv, to support Israel, to support the Star of David. For them to be running into rivers, to be kicked while defenseless on the floor, to be trying to suggest and beg people to believe that they are not Jewish. This is very sad times for us all given the last year and what we have had to experience.”
On what happened on the streets of Amsterdam overnight, Mansford added: “I think we can understand that as best as we can follow all the footage. Of course, there were one or two bits outside our hotel but nothing like what our fans had to experience especially around the train center which seemed to have been the beginning and epi-center of all of it. But I think it will take us days, weeks and even longer to digest truly all the different incidents and all the lessons that could be learned.”

On the owner Mitch Goldhar, who was present in Amsterdam, Mansford added: “I don’t you know if you are all aware but Mitch Goldhar, Jack Angelides with Avi Mizrahi all stayed, went around some fans and a number of hotels where fans were present in large contingence. So, I am so fortunate we have such an incredible owner. We all know Mitch’s background; we all know how supportive he is of this country. It must be another very sad to for him, but we couldn’t have a better owner to lead from the front at these times.”
The Maccabi CEO reflected on the support the club received from the moment the incidents began unfolding: “A huge credit to the Sports Ministry and the foreign ministry, Shino Zuartez, and Moran Meiri from the IFA who at 2-3 in the morning were mobilizing as I am sure you all saw. I also feel a strong sense of solidarity not just with our fellow clubs in Israel but also as you have all seen their messages from Beitar Jerusalem to aMaccabi Haifa and the list goes on. As we landed, we also saw a sense of solidarity from clubs across Europe – I think everybody knows what happened last night and clearly some lessons need to be learned
Maccabi’s captain Eran Zahavi added: “We all saw what happened. It is an absolute disgrace. But this is the world we currently live in and sadly our fans felt threatened and experienced horrors. People traveled to watch a football game, and this is what happened. The club will do everything for the fans.”
Peretz: “We will continue learning from such opponents”
Maccabi suffered their fourth defeat in the Europa League phase going losing 5-0 to Ajax at the Johan Cruyff Arena. Dor Peretz who captained Maccabi on the night spoke at the end of the match: “We played against a very very good opponent. We wanted to get something out of here in terms of a result but sadly we didn’t” Peretz said. “We have only things to learn from a team of this calibre and we must continue moving forward.”
On the heavy defeat, Peretz continued: “Bigger teams than us suffer similar defeats out here, and while we are not feeling comfortable with such results, this was an opponent of the highest standard.”

As attention will now turn to Sunday’s league match away to Bnei Sakhnin, Peretz said: “We have the league which is our bread and butter and we must come well prepared.”
On Maccabi’s fourth defeat of the group phase, Peretz summed up: “We have still a long way to go. We are still far behind, especially if we see how well we managed to cope in the first two matches. We played well enough to deserve points but didn’t do it. We will continue learning from teams of this calibre and from the way they play. If we manage to do those things and play at such an intensity we will go a long way.”
Ahead of Sunday’s league match at Sakhnin, Peretz said: “We will have to recover quickly both physically and mentally as Sakhnin awaits on Sunday which is the most important task right now”.
