The class of 1986/87 numbers: The squad, titles and goal scorers

Maccabi’s most significant achievement during the 1986/87 season was winning the 16th State Cup in the club’s history.

On the way to the final Maccabi had an impressive run which saw them advance at the expense of several big cubs. A 2-1 victory over the 1985/86 champions Hapoel Tel Aviv in the round of 16, a 3-1 victory over Maccabi Jaffa in the Quarter Finals and a 2-0 win over the 1986/87 champions Beitar Jerusalem in the Semi Finals. The State Cup final against Maccabi Haifa ended 3-3 after extra time and was settled at the end of a penalty shoot-out.

The Head Coach was Shimon Shenhar who coached the team between 1985-1987 and for him that was the second Cup victory after winning it with Beitar Jerusalem in 1979.

Maccabi finished third in the league with Beitar Jerusalem winning the championship and Bnei Yehuda as the runners up.

Maccabi’s leading goal scorers were Alon Natan and Eli Driks both with 10 goals each.

Menashe Shimonov and Bonnie Ginzburg made the most league appearances with 29 each.

Twenty players featured for Maccabi during the 1986/87 season with Eli Driks leading the goal-scoring chart with 18 goals. Ginzburg  and Shimonov made the most appearances with 43 appearances in all competitions.

Maccabi also won the Lilian Cup (the League cup competition which was played between the top four clubs). A 3-1 victory over Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Semi Final was followed by a 2-1 victory over Maccabi Haifa in the final.

Maccabi’s highest victory was a 7-1 victory over Beitar Netanya on MD15 with Eli Driks (2), Yair Sanduri (2), Alon Natan (2) and Benny Tabak scoring the goals

Saluting the Cup Winners of 1986/87

There is no Maccabi fan who was raised in the 90’s that doesn’t remember the day we won 3-1 on the final day of the 1995/96 season. There is no fan who couldn’t saw where she watched the dramatic 3-2 derby of the 2013/14 season. If you are those who were hit by the Yellow and Blue bug back in the 80’s or even before, you would probably recall where you were almost 40 years ago when one of the most dramatic and memorable State Cup finals was played.

This season as well, the club continues its’ tradition of retro matches that became a popular feature amongst Maccabi fans that pays tribute to one legendary team from the past.

This time we chose the class of 1986/87 which was packed with home grown talents, a team that ended a 10 year barren run. A team that won the State Cup at the end of an extraordinary final against Maccabi Haifa that ended in a 3-3 draw after extra time and was settled in a penalty shoot-out.

Our next home match against Maccabi Petah Tikva (Saturday, 19:30) will be dedicated entirely to the class of 1986/87. The current Maccabi will play with a replica retro kit which was born by the team that lifted the Cup at the Ramat Gan national stadium back in June 1987.

The atmosphere at Bloomfield stadium should be emotional as prior to kickoff we will hold a ceremony presenting and honoring the legends of the 1986/87 season. amongst some of the surprises which will await you in the stadium you could find the retro shirts from 1986/87 featuring the old Maccabi crest. In addition you could add to your collection a special retro jacket directly from the 80’s as well as a unique scarf which was launched for the occasion. This year we also have great news for the parents and the kids: we solved your headache ahead of Purim with an official retro costume which is available both online and at the official store at Bloomfield.

If you are one of those who can’t contain yourself, we would like you to know that the nostalgic celebration will begin on Friday as you can enjoy a selection of retro content on the official App and Maccabi’s social media platforms. Amongst the content you could watch a special feature with Bonnie Ginzburg and Eli Driks, two stars of that Maccabi team, who take us back to that State Cup final.

Our recommendation is reserve some time to enjoy the retro experience which would remind you all of Maccabi Tel Aviv’s glorious past.

State Cup: Maccabi beat Jaffa 3-1

Four days after the victory over Hapoel Be’ersheva in the league, Maccabi returned to Bloomfield stadium for the State Cup Round of 16 tie against second division side Maccabi Jaffa.

Maccabi’s Head Coach, Robbie Keane, made several changes as he allowed some of his players gain valuable minutes in the Cup while others were handed much needed rest.

Daniel Tenenbaum, whose last appearance in goal was in May last season, was named in the starting line-up for the first time in this campaign. Idan Nachmias and Matan Baltaxa were both named as the two central defenders with Avishai Cohen and Ofir Davidzada completing Maccabi’s back-four in front of the Brazilian born custodian. Eden Karzev was assigned to the anchorman role with Dor Peretz and Kiko Bondoso completing Maccabi’s midfield engine room. Yonatan Cohen and Osher Davida supplied the width on the right and left while Dor Turgeman spearheaded Keane’s attack.

On the bench, Keane, named Orlando Mosquera, Roy Revivo, Eran Zahavi, Dan Biton, Joris van Overeem, Gabi Kanichowsky, Felicio Milson, Eyal Golasa and Ido Shahar.

First Half

Maccabi began the match with purpose and intention as Osher Davida looked lively down the left wing causing Jaffa’s defence all sorts of problems. Three minutes from the start Davida whipped in a cross from the left which was directed at Dor Turgeman. But as the young forward couldn’t connect the ball reached Yonatan Cohen whose attempt bounced wide of the target.

In the 14th minute Dor Turgeman tried curling a right foot shot from the edge of the area which was equalled by Jaffa’s keeper Adi Nasa who was at full stretch to push the ball out. While the visitors sat back soaking the pressure and protecting their goal, Yonatan Cohen tried to find an opening with a left foot drive that sailed high and wide.

Maccabi were back on level terms in the 43rd minute as Davida tore Jaffa’s defence from the left and sent the ball across the face of goal where Turgeman tucked it home from close range.

Second Half

When no change to either side at the restart, Maccabi began the second half just like they did with the first – a siege on Jaffa’s goal right from the off. Six minutes after the restart Kiko Bondoso broke into the area and floated a cross which was volleyed by Cohen forcing Nasa to a fingertip save.

Robbie Keane made his first two changes as Gabi Kanichowsky and Felicio Milson came on for Bondoso and Cohen shortly before the hour mark. Kanichowsky almost made an instant impact as he sent a free kick into the area on 66 which was headed by Turgeman onto the roof of the net.

Ido Shahar and Eran Zahavi were introduced for Peretz and Turgeman in the 78th as Keane made his third and fourth change. Less than a minute later Milson crossed from the touchline to Davida whose volley saw Nasa pull a reflex save on his goalline. But while Jaffa struggled to clear the danger Zahavi rifled a low drive from the corner of the area which eluded the visitors’ defence and their keeper to complete the comeback in the 80th minute to end his goalscoring drought.

A combination of the post freak misses denied Maccabi a third as the ball seemed reluctant to go in. Eyal Golasa replaced Karzev for the final substitution on the night but Zahavi still had his point to prove. An accurate strike in the 85th made it 3-1 with his second on the night. In the 89th minute Maccabi rounded the keeper and blasted the ball into the roof of the net but the linesman raised his flag for offside denying him a hattrick.
