A numbers game: Maccabi equaled best ever start

Maccabi Tel Aviv kicked off the second league round with a 4-1 victory away to Ashdod. Robbie Keane’s high-flying charges are on an amazing run – one of the best in Israel’s history.

The victory over Ashdod set Maccabi’s league record on 12 victories and 1 draw from 13 matches. This is the best start to a league campaign which equals the achievement recorded by Hapoel Petah Tikva (1954/55), Maccabi Tel Aviv (1993/94) and Maccabi Haifa (2005/06) with all three teams winning the championship at the end of the season.

For the first time since March 2021, Maccabi recorded their 10th league victory in succession. Only 7 clubs in Israel’s history have a longer run: Maccabi Tel Aviv (4), Maccabi Haifa (2) and Hapoel Petah Tikva (1). Maccabi holds the record of 20 league victories in succession which was set in October 1951.

Maccabi recorded their 12th successive victory in all competitions for the first time in this millennium. Only six times in its’ history Maccabi enjoyed a longer run.

The victory stretched Maccabi’s unbeaten run at Ashdod’s stadium in the league to five matches having won four and drawn once.

Maccabi’s record away to Ashdod in the league currently stands on 21 victories, 10 draws and 8 defeats. The 62.4% success rate is the best amongst the 14 clubs that played at Ashdod for 10 league matches or more. Maccabi Haifa are second with a 55% success rate at Ashdod.

Ofir Davidzada who completed 90 minutes last night, made his 200th appearance for Maccabi in all competitions.

Kiko Bondoso who scored his debut Maccabi goal as the Portuguese midfielder became the 302nd player in the club’s history to score in the league.

As well as Bondoso, Dan Biton, Dor Turgeman and Gabi Kanichowsky were all on target. This was the second time this season that four different players scored in one match as Dor Peretz (2), Biton, Zahavi and Turgeman were all on target in the Tel Aviv derby.

A record of seven different goal scorers were on target in one match. Meir Melika (2), Eli Driks, Avi Nimni, Itzik Zohar, Gadi Brumer, Metzah Masubi and Arik Shriki all scored in the 8-0 victory over Beitar Tel Aviv in the 1992/93 season.

Robbie Keane’s charges are on an amazing run of nine league victories in succession and have an eight-point-lead at the top of the table with 34 points from 12 matches. Ashdod, on the other hand, are bottom of the table with 9 points from 13 matches and a dismal run of four defeats in succession.

Four days after beating Hapoel Haifa 1-0 at Sammy Ofer, Keane made four changes to his side as Ofir Davidzada who came on for the injured Derrick Luckassen at center back, kept his place. Idan Nachmias, who scored the winning goal against Haifa partnered Davidzada as the second central defender. Avishai Cohen on the right and Roy Revivo on the left completed Maccabi’s defensive line Infront of goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera. Joris van Overeem in the anchorman role was joined by Gabi Kanichowsky and Ido Shahar to form Maccabi’s midfield trio. In the absence of Felicio Milson who joined his national team Africa Cup of Nations, Kiko Bndoso made his first start in the league. Dan Biton was named by Keane on the opposite flank with Eran Zahavi leading the line as the striker.

On the bench, Keane, named Roi Mishpati, Dor Turgeman, Yonatan Cohen, Sheran Yeini, Yehuda Belay, Saied Abu Farchi, Dor Peretz and Osher Davida.

First Half

Maccabi started the match on the front foot with Kiko Bondoso, on his first league start, looking lively down the left flank. In the sixth minute however a mistake by Orlando Mosquera saw the Panamanian keeper concede a free kick after handling the ball just outside his area. Tom Ben Zaken sent his powerful curling free kick but Mosquera corrected his mistake by catching the ball on his line. In the 13th minute Bondoso whipped a cross into the danger zone towards Ido Shahar and Eran Zahavi. The initial attempt of a header was blocked by a defender before Dan Biton pounced on the rebound but sent his drop kick high over the crossbar. In the 20th minute Roy Revivo was booked for fouling Zohar Zasno on the edge of the area but Mohamad Kna’an’s free kick struck the wal while his rebound deflected for a corner that was cleared.

While Maccabi dominated the play, Ashdod looked dangerous on the counter attack but Ofir Davidzada deputising as a central defender alongside Idan Nachmias squandered all the hosts’ attempts. In the 26th minute Biton tried his luck with a left foot shot from the edge of the area which was blocked for a corner. Two minutes later Bondoso, Revivo and Gabi Kanichowsky combined well only for the diminutive midfielder to send his shot crashing against the side netting. Maccabi continued to look dangerous mostly down the left flank as Revivo charged on a solo effort from the halfway line but after beating four Ashdod player narrowly missed the target. Right on the half hour mark Zahavi tried curling a right foot shot that beat Ariel Harush but crept to the wrong side of the post.

In the 39th minute Robbie Keane was forced to make his first change as Joris van Overeem limped off and was replaced by Dor Peretz.

The fourth official indicated three minutes of added time before Maccabi were awarded a free kick 25 meters away from goal. Biton stepped-up and curled a left foot shot which went in off the giving Ariel Harush no chance to give Maccabi the lead shortly before the interval.

Second Half

Maccabi began the second half where the first half left off as Biton sent Kanichowsky into the area on 47 before he cut the ball back for Bondoso. The Portugeuse midfielder turned on the spot and sent the ball past Harush to double the score with his debut Maccabi goal. In the 53rd minute Peretz spotted the keeper off his line as he sent a cross from the right that landed on tbe roof of the net.

In the 55th minute Ben Zaken was allowed to rise unmarked and meet a corner but the Ashdod skipper sent his header over the crossbar. An Ashdod counter attack on 57 saw the hosts carve Maccabi’s defense open as Ebanezer Mamatah who was released beat Mosquera to cut the deficit. Avishai Cohen was booked by referee Snir Levy for preventing Kna’an from releasing what could have been a dangerous counter attack in the 59th minute. Keane reacted with a double substitution as Sheran Yeini and Enric Saborit replaced Revivo and Cohen with Davidzada returning to his left back role.

Saborit was booked in the 71st minute for a foul on Kna’an at the exact spot where Biton scored the opener. But unlike Biton, Michael Ohana sent his free kick high over Mosquera’s goal.

Keane made his two final substitutions in the 80th minute as Zahavi and Shahar both bowed out and were replaced by Yonatan Cohen and Dor Turgeman. In the 84th minute a Maccabi counter attack saw Cohen release Turgeman who kept his calm before burying the ball in the back of the net to make it 3-1.

Kanichowsky ensured the victory in the 90th minute as he carried the ball from the halfway line and fired a low drive that beat Harush for the fourth Maccabi goal on the night. The diminutive midfielder whose close friend died in action in Gaza a few days ago, paid tribute by racing to the bench and holding a banner with his photo.

Ido Shahar: “Enjoy learning from the experienced players here”

Maccabi travel to Ashdod this evening to face the bottom of the table side for MD14 of the ONE ZERO League. The match against Ashdod will be the first of 2024 and will also begin the second the league round. Ido Shahar who signed a new 2.5-year-deal at the club spoke ahead of the match. “It is a very emotional moment for me as it was my dream to play for Maccabi’s first team ever-since I joined the club’s Youth Academy at the age of 11. We used to train on the artificial pitch at Kiryat Shalom and we used to sneak peeks towards the first team’s trainings. It was my dream, as I am happy to have reached this status and this situation. I went through the entire journey from the youth academy to the senior side via Beitar Tel Aviv. I think I did the right process to be able to reach this stage ready.”

The 22-year-old midfielder who had loan spells with various clubs, added: “I knew it was going to be my season and I had a feeling I will stay here” he added, “The start of my season wasn’t easy after what I experienced in the summer with the disappointment of missing out on the U21 European Championship Finals for medical reasons. I couldn’t train at 100% level in pre-season but worked really hard during all this time, waited for my chance and I am delighted to have received it.”

On work under Robbie Keane and his coaching staff, Shahar revealed: “As a young player this is the best you can ask for. They all have so much experience as they played at the highest levels and besides that they are people who come to teach you as well. I take so many tips from them as well as from so many experienced players we have here. Eran (Zahavi), Sheran (Yeini) and Dor (Peretz). I love learning from those players as I managed to take something from everyone.”

On the qualities that have taken Maccabi to such heights this season, Shahar explained: “This year I feel there is something special in the dressing room. Everyone is just united and the feeling in training is just phenomenal. There is an amazing group of guys, an excellent vibe and I am really enjoying myself. In the end you are measured by victories and if you don’t do your work one can say that all the other stuff isn’t interesting. As soon as you win everything is looking good and it helps the atmosphere.”

Maccabi will play Ashdod behind closed doors as Shahar said: “Obviously there is a massive difference between playing in front of fans ort empty seats, but I am not trying to make any excuses ahead of the match. We would have clearly wished to see our fans there as it would help us having them around, but we still need to win this match.”

On the difficulty of playing away to Ashdod, Shahar summed up: “Ashdod, and not just against Maccabi is a difficult ground for every team to play at. It’s a very tough place to come to. But we are a good team and need to keep our momentum.” With Maccabi winning the last nine league matches in succession and 11 in all competitions, Shahar knows what needs to be kept: “We have a great momentum going and we need to continue without stopping. One of the most important things at Maccabi is the quality of the squad. This is a squad that at every given moment and at every match, every player can be in the starting line-up. This is a blessing and a very healthy ingredient for a team. At times like this, when the space between matches is short and the intensity is high, we need all our squad. Everyone needs to be ready so that when the chance comes his way he can take it and do everything for the team.”
