Maccabi one up on Liverpool

The 2019-2020 regular season has come to an end and before the hectic and thrilling playoff phase begins, this is the time to sum up the two phases of home and away matches which has seen Maccabi Tel Aviv remain unbeaten at the top of the standings, six points ahead of closest challengers, Maccabi Haifa.

Maccabi have amassed 19 wins and seven draws in their 26 regular season fixtures and their total of 64 points translates to an 82 percent success rate. This has been bettered only twice before, in the 2019 and 2014 seasons, when they amassed 66 points after 26 matches.

With the achievement, Maccabi have become the fifth club to end the regular season without defeat and they are the first team ever to do it two seasons running.

After yesterday, when Liverpool were stunned 3-0 by Watford, Maccabi remain the only unbeaten team in any European league this season.

Twelve Maccabi players have scored this season and Yonatan Cohen heads the list as the most prolific with 10 goals and 10 assists.

Maccabi have also ended 21 out of their 26 games with a clean sheet, which equals their own record from last season. The record is shared with Kiryat Shmona who also reached the mark in 2011-12.

While last season Maccabi needed the playoff rounds to reach their unbeaten mark, this time there is a good chance to better that mark, as the record has been reached with the playoffs still ahead.

Maccabi have led the league in 22 out of the 26 rounds so far this season. Their longest winning run stretched for six matches, between rounds seven and 12, and all those victories were achieved without conceding a goal, another all-time club record.

Youth weekend fixtures results

Hapoel Rishon Lezion registered a big upset on Saturday by beating their hosts, Maccabi Tel Aviv “Shahar,” 3-1 in Ness Ziona in under-19 league action. Maccabi, second in the standings, were the favourites going into the clash against their opponents, who are 14th in the division.

Adir Rothstein scored twice and Mohammed Bamba once for Rishon while Tal Torgeman hit the target for Maccabi.

Hosts Hapoel Haifa beat Maccabi Tel Aviv “Oded” 2-0 at Kiryat Haim but Maccabi’s U17 side remain at the top of their division after 19 rounds of play, two points ahead of Hapoel Tel Aviv.

U16 were hosted by Hapoel Raanana and drew 1-1 in the 21st round of their division to remain second in the standings, seven points off the pace. Oscar Gloch scored for Maccabi “Eli Fuchs.”

U15, playing at home, were involved in a high-scoring draw with Maccabi Haifa in the 19th round of action. They led 4-2 with only minutes to go, but two injury time goals by Haifa saw share of the points. Maccabi’s goals were scored by Roey Zerzevsky, Maor Ben Nun, Agam Hanoun and Osher Bruchim.

Goal scorer Almog happy at taking the points

Eylon Almog, who scored the only goal in Maccabi Tel Aviv’s 1-0 away win over Maccabi Netanya, told reporters after Saturday’s game that although winning the points was the most important thing, in a long season, sometimes the performances are not always what they should be.

“As the coach said, this was not one of our better games, but in a long season these things do happen. We won by the skin of our teeth but I’m happy that we managed to take the three points,” Almog said.

“It was disappointing for us to play this way but the coach will analyse the game with us and will explain what we need to do to improve.”

“It’s always great to score early in the game and we wanted to continue the momentum and score more, but that didn’t happen. At least we took the points,” Almog added.

He said he had decided to hang on and stay at Maccabi despite a good offer from Beitar Jerusalem last season. “I’m very happy that I stayed here, my home club,” he said.

Ivic unhappy at untidy Maccabi performance

Maccabi Tel Aviv registered yet another win on Saturday as they beat Maccabi Netanya 1-0 in the final regular season fixture before the playoffs.

The league leaders have opened up a nine-point gap at the top of the standings ahead of second-placed Maccabi Haifa, who host Hapoel Beersheba on Sunday, but the performance in Netanya was one of the defending champions’ worst of the season, according to coach Vladimir Ivic.

“This was the worst game we have had,” Ivic said after the final whistle. “We can only take the points from this game because for most of the time we did not show the Maccabi spirit. We were poor in possession and were not good in trying to win the ball. We will have to be professional as we look ahead.”

Ivic said the game, in general, was not good although he said it was difficult to immediately analyse what went wrong.

“I will talk to my players later because if we continue in this vein it will not be good,” he added.

Ragged Maccabi hold on for win against Netanya

Maccabi Tel Aviv ended the entire regular season unbeaten on Saturday after registering a 1-0 win over Maccabi Netanya in their final TASE Premier League fixture before the playoff phase begins.

Maccabi were far from their best, particularly in the second half, when Netanya took control and had far more attempts to score, although they failed to find the target and on one occasion were denied by the woodwork.

The opening few minutes belied what was to follow as Maccabi wasted little time in getting their show on the road and went ahead in the fourth minute when Eylon Almog latched on to a through ball slightly on the left from Yonatan Cohen. He raised his leg and guided the ball into the Netanya yet well out of reach of Danny Amos in goal.

Maccabi had another chance on 25 minutes when Omer Atzili crossed a free kick on from the right but Jair Amador was unable to head the ball past Amos. That was almost the last we saw of Maccabi’s attacking efforts throughout the match as their attacking might deserted them and the home team were allowed to take control of the midfield.

Netanya had a good chance in the 43rd minute, only for Gabi Kanikovsky to shoot high over Daniel Tenenbaum’s crossbar.

The second half was a ragged and inaccurate kick-about but in the 55th minute, Jonas Malede almost pulled Netanya level with an excellent curling shot from the left that was beyond Tenenbaum’s reach, although Maccabi were saved by the right post.

While Netanya looked the more dangerous side in the second half and used their speed to attack, some competent defending by Maccabi’s players and a good save by Tenenbaum ensured yet another clean sheet.

Youth team upset by Hapoel Rishon Lezion

Hapoel Rishon Lezion registered a big upset on Saturday by beating their hosts, Maccabi Tel Aviv “Shahar,” 3-1 in Ness Ziona in under-19 league action.

Maccabi, second in the standings, were the favourites going into the clash against their opponents, who are 14th in the division.

Rishon scored in the fifth minute through a long range strike by Adir Rothstein. The visitors might have scored a second goal within three minutes through Mohammed Bamba, but Maccabi were saved by the post.

Maccabi made a great effort to get back on level terms soon afterwards but were unable to find the target on a number of occasions.

Rishon got their second goal in the 75th minute from a corner when Bamba was on hand to tap in from close range.

Maccabi finally scored in the 90th minute when Tal Torgeman struck a volley, but any hope they might have had of levelling the score as they tried to push forward for the equaliser were undone in the dying seconds when Rothstein sealed the result with his second goal of the match.
