Piven: I’m pleased to be a part of this club

Shahar Piven has signed a new four-year contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv and showed the pleasure of the announcement at Thursday’s pre-match news conference alongside coach Vladimir Ivic.

“I think it’s the dream of every player who grows up at Maccabi to be a member of the team and I am very happy,” he said after posing with a Maccabi shirt that had his name and 2024, the date when his current contract expires.

“I am pleased at the confidence the club has shown in me, it’s an honour to be offered a long-term contract. I am honoured to be a member of this club,” he said.

Piven warned of the consequences of taking opponents lightly in the cup. Maccabi are away to Hapoel Umm El Fahm on Saturday in Afula. They are a second division club but the player warned that they will be a threat.

“Any team can lose at any stage of the cup, no matter how big or how small. They have a good coach and we won’t be underestimating any opponents from any league, certainly not from the second division.”

Piven agreed with others that there was still work to be done at the club and that the team has not yet reached its full potential.

“I’m very happy we broke the record but there is no way you can go through a season without conceding a goal. Any club can score against us and we take all our opponents seriously. The record is in the past now and we have to work on our game. There is lots to improve and we must get back to doing our best.”

PIVEN SIGNS NEW FOUR-YEAR-DEAL

Shahar Piven has signed a new four year deal at Maccabi Tel Aviv which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2023-24 season.

The 24-year-old defender who has risen through Maccabi’s Youth Academy, today signed a new contract at Maccabi Tel Aviv which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2023-24 season.

After signing, Piven told the club’s official website: “I am delighted to sign a new contract extension at Maccabi Tel Aviv, the club where I grew up and was raised. I would like to thank Ben Mansford for the faith he has shown in me and for being a significant factor in my progress at the club. Now I am waiting to justify on the pitch the faith shown in me and continue marching the club forward to future titles.”

Coach Vladimir Ivic added: “It is good news that the club and Shahar have reached an agreement to extend his contract. Shahar deserves it because he has worked hard to achieve this, as he is one of the young players who will be the future of Maccabi Tel Aviv Football Club. From now on it’s all up to him and I am convinced that he will take his chance on the way to a successful career.”

Piven returned to Maccabi at the start of the 2018-19 season after several seasons on loan to Beitar Tel Aviv and Ashdod SC. He scored his debut goal for the club in the Toto Cup derby and has made a total of 30 appearances in all completions including 25 in the TASE Premier League.

This season, Piven made his European debut and has made a total of 12 appearances in all competitions so far.

Saturday’s age-group fixtures

Maccabi Tel Aviv’s youth team return to league action on Saturday after a two-week international break and will host Nof Hagalil at their home ground in Ness Ziona at noon.

Eliezer Ben Aharon’s charges, who are unbeaten, lie third in the youth league table and look to be the favourites against Nof Hagalil, who are 14th in the division with only three wins after 12 rounds of play.

Maccabi Petah Tikva v. Maccabi Tel Aviv “Oded”, 14:30: Boys A will be brimming with confidence after winning the Derby last week and like the youth team, lie third in their division, three points ahead and three places ahead of their hosts.

Maccabi Tel Aviv “Eli Fuchs” v. Maccabi Haifa: Boys B lie atop their division and with eight consecutive wins will be confident going into their match against Haifa, who are third in the division. The game will be played at Kiryat Shalom, kickoff at 10:30.

Maccabi Tel Aviv “Eldad” v. Bnei Yehuda: Boys C host their opponents in the small city derby in the 10th round of action. They lie fourth in their division, while Bnei Yehuda are seventh. The match will be played at Kiryat Shalom, kickoff at 8.30.

Yeini credits Maccabi’s success for helping him

Maccabi Tel Aviv captain Sheran Yeini was one of several players who visited Safra Children’s Hospital at Tel Hashomer on Wednesday where they brought ailing kids good wishes and gifts for Hanukkah. He talked about his own recovery from injury and the club’s form this season.

“There are patients here with difficult injuries and ailments and they will need a long period of recovery. They enjoy welcoming us but we also feel good about being able to make them smile a little,” Yeini said.

He talked about his own injury and said: “I had a muscle injury that required a long period of recovery, I then came back but re-injured myself. These things happen sometimes but it has required mental toughness to deal with the situation, so I’m really excited about getting back into action.

“It’s good to see that the team have managed without me and now there will be tough competition for places but I’m sure that we will all benefit from the rivalry.”

Yeini said that the past two draws would cause the players to pick up the pace and strive for better results.

“Maccabi are a good enough club to be able to deal with two consecutive draws. It’s not easy when we don’t achieve our aims but we are competitive and we know that even a draw will make us hungry for better results.”

Players celebrate Hanukkah with gifts to kids at Safra Hospital

The visit was part of the Maccabi Tel Aviv FC Foundation’s activities in the community to bring a smile to the faces of ailing children throughout the country.

The players distributed gifts and posed for photos with the children, wishing them a speedy recovery and a happy holiday.
