Van Leeuwen attends ECA Conference on Academy Standards
Academies has been an important topic amongst youth football over the past few years and just as new technology has been at the forefront of the ever-evolving world of football with information being shared between clubs the same is true about Academies. Last week, Patrick van Leeuwen, Maccabi Tel Aviv’s Performance Director attended a special ECA conference concerning this matter, as the body representing the interests of association football clubs in UEFA have looked to continue to explore this subject matter in much more depth.
Van Leeuwen, along with representatives from Juventus, Sporting Lisbon, Olympiakos along with other top clubs in Europe were selected to be part of a team assembled to establish a list of standards that will form the basis for any Club that wants to build or analyze their Academy. “A lot of the conference was spent discussing Academy standards in European countries. We want to ensure that the Academies will be at the highest professional levels and for them not to just say that they have an Academy. We want to really make sure that the coaches and players have the best facilities in order from them to develop to the best of their abilities.”
About what Maccabi Tel Aviv will gain van Leeuwen said: “As part of the cross sharing of information, I hope that we will be able to receive reports that we will be able to use at Maccabi’s Academy and then be able to compare ourselves and our performance standards to the biggest and best clubs in Europe.” The Performance Director continued to discuss the differences between the perception of Academies in Israel to those from abroad: “From what I understand, for the most part in Israel, Academies don’t have the highest demands compared to other clubs in Holland, Germany, Spain and others where there are ratings and various levels of their Academy’s training facilities, performance and investment. Maccabi is currently having some challenges in developing the training facilities, but we are going in the right direction.”

Maccabi “Shachar” Tel Aviv 3:0 Ashdod
The Under-19 club picked up their third win in a row as Or Dasa, Eylon Almog and Mahmoud Awesat all scored in the victory. In two weeks time Guy Tzarfati’s side will face Hapoel Beer Sheva.
Maccabi “Kalfo” Petach Tikva 0:1 Maccabi “Oded” Tel Aviv
Eliezer Ben Aharon’s squad scored an important win after returning from the International break. Omer Berami scored the lone goal of the contest in the 19th minute as the Under-17 team sits in first place with two matches in hand.
Hapoel Beer Sheva 0:3 Maccabi “Eli Fuchs” Tel Aviv
Bar Cohen’s 28th minute goal along with second half strikes by Iddo Shachar and Raava Assayag helped Alon Brumer’s club pick up the three points and the win at Hapoel Beer Sheva. The young Yellow & Blue find themselves tied for first place with Maccabi Haifa while next Matchday they’ll be playing against Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Derby.
Maccabi “Max” Haifa 1:3 Maccabi “Eldad” Tel Aviv
Even though Ori David’s side was down 1:0 in Haifa, they came storming back as Stav Nachmani drew Maccabi “Eldad” even before the break. In the second half, Nehorai Bitton and Or Roizman scored for the the Under-15 team to complete the comeback win.
Maccabi “Ilan” Tel Aviv 4:0 Hapoel “Nir” Ramat HaSharon
Amir Sofer’s squad made sure to put last week’s disappointing loss to bed as his team defeated Ramat HaSharon at Kiryat Shalom on goals by Yehali Lazar, Tal Turgeman, Niv Berkovic and Harel Ben Yehuda.
Tzarfati: “The team is continuing to improve”
Maccabi “Shachar” Tel Aviv picked up their third win in a row when they defeated Ashdod 3:0. Guy Tzarfati, the club’s Head Coach looked back at the match and also talked about the current wining streak: “The team is continuing to improve. They understand what they need to do and they also know what is expected of them. If they continue this way they will be able to make the next jump.”
On the last few matches:
“There are some common denominators that we can see over the past few games; we didn’t give up any goals and we played well defensively. We had plenty of opportunities and some were similar situations that we had seen in training. It’s still not what I am expecting but we are continuing to improve slowly but surely.”
How he chooses the Starting XI:
“I believe that at the end of the day the players have to take advantage of the opportunities that they are given. Those who do, will be the ones that will be on the pitch. It’s fairly simple, the players must meet expectations.”
Next match against Hapoel Beer Sheva:
“To me, it doesn’t matter who we are playing against as we won’t make any changes as to how we play and it’s clear what system we use both home or away. It will certainly be a bit tougher against Beer Sheva and I told the team that their game play today wasn’t good enough. I really hope that next match things will look a better.”
About having four players who trained with the First Team last week:
“Going to train with the First Team is a credit to our academy. I’m all for the players having the opportunity to train with them because the First Team is most important.”
There’s no place like home: Maccabi “Shachar” defeats Ashdod 3-0
Prematch
Matchday Eight of the Youth Ligat Ha’Al saw Maccabi “Shachar” host Ashdod at Kiryat Shalom due to the winterization of the Ramle Stadium pitch. Head Coach Guy Tzarfati’s club looked to gain more ground on the table leaders after winning two straight matches and replaced Netanel Peretz with Ron Zamir while Ron Gabay also featured in the Starting XI.
First Half
The Yellow & Blue opened the match up very aggressively and their early efforts paid off in the fifth minute. Ron Zamir who was making his first start of the season found Or Dasa with an intelligent pass to beat the Ashdod keeper Roie Beigel from in close to give Maccabi a 1:0 lead.
The Under-19 side continued its fine play and again hit pay dirt in the 15th minute. Amit Rozenboim stole the ball in the middle of the pitch and passed it to Dasa in between two defenders. The winger sent Eylon Almog a pinpoint perfect pass who put the ball right between the keeper’s legs for a 2:0 advantage. The contest calmed down for the balance of the half as the two squads headed in the break with Maccabi holding a two goal lead.
Second Half
The teams made no substitutions at the half as Maccabi “Shachar” were unable to keep up the same pace as they had begun the game with. However, a 60th minute Tomer Altman’s chip to Ron Zamir was headed off of the bar and one minute later Altman’s 20 meter blast was collected by the keeper to keep the score as is.
But it didn’t take much longer for Maccabi to find goal number three as Eylon Almog came flying into the box off of the wing. He passed the ball to Dasa who beat one Ashdod player and handed it off to Mahmoud Awesat who scored for the 3:0 Yellow & Blue lead.
Guy Tzarfati also gave Eden Kartzev, Guy Shteach, Prince Thomas and Bar Galili playing time in the 3:0 win as next week Maccabi “Shachar” will kick off against Hapoel Beer Sheva on Matchday Nine of the Youth Ligat Ha’Al.
Tibi: “We want to come away with a good result and that means a win”
The International break saw five Maccabi Tel Aviv players called up for Israel as they face Albania on Matchday Four of 2018 World Cup Qualifying with the hope of returning home with a good result.
Eitan Tibi spoke to the Official Website prior to the match and discussed the security issues surrounding the game: “Everything’s ok as there is a large security detail going with us to Albania. Of course it’s difficult not to think about it but we are on a mission and that is to play a match and come away with a good result. That should be the only thing that is in our heads and a good result in my opinion is to win the game.”
On Dor Micha joining the rest of the Maccabi players with Israel:
“Maccabi has been sending many players to the National Team over the past few years and I’m happy that Dor was able to be part of the squad. He certainly deserves to be here.”
About the opponent:
“We will be playing against a fit and well trained side that is very physical and I’m sure we will see that on the pitch. We have to be ready for what they have to offer but we also need to know how to execute our game plan as well.”
Transitioning from Maccabi to the National Team:
“I feel that I’m in good shape and I am already very experienced in making the switch between Maccabi and the National Team. Every match is different as well as Maccabi and the National Team. We didn’t forget about the Maccabi Petach Tikva match but we also know how to put it aside and prepare properly for Albania.”
