Playing with the big boys: Get to Know Eden Kartzev

After returning from a successful Youth International break, Maccabi “Shachar” Tel Aviv will meet SC Ashdod on Saturday at Kiryat Shalom, 11:00. Eden Kartzev will also be rejoining his team after helping the Israel Under-17 National Team advance to the Elite Round recording three victories. The young midfielder plays a very physical game with an extremely hard and accurate shot that has already helped him score a number of goals to date.

Even before playing in the most recent UEFA tournament, Eden Kartzev made a bit of history breaking the all time appearance record for the Israel Under-17 club playing in 22 matches: “I just came back this week from a terrific tournament with the Israel National Team. We reached our goal and I’m back in good shape. I even had the opportunity to return from the International break and train with the First Team. On Saturday I’ll return to the Under-19 squad for a contest against Ashdod. It wasn’t my first or second time with the National Team. It’s a fantastic feeling to put on the Blue & White of the National Team and it’s a lot of fun to see how I’ve been improving. You get seen at these competitions and it’s a terrific stage to continue to advance.”

“It’s wasn’t easy for me at the beginning because there were players that were 3-4 years older than me. I didn’t realize where I was at the start but I acclimated and my teammates accepted me with open arms. I’m really happy as to how everything unfolded. Ziv Arie, the coach who brought me to the Under-19’s spoke to me a lot and said that it didn’t matter to him if I was the youngest or the oldest but that he believed in my abilities.”

About being a youngster and playing a very important position:

“It’s fun to play on a club that’s a year older than me as it helps me improve on a personal level and with my team play. It shows that they really rely on me and it’s great. I trained with the First Team this week and that’s another way where you can advance and improve at Maccabi. You see players who you just dream about playing with them and then all of a sudden you’re training with them. Anything and everything can happen. If you’re good in this match or that match, they hear about you and then you make your debut. The sky’s the limit.”

On Maccabi “Shachar” Tel Aviv’s season so far:

“We had a few issues at the beginning of the season because of the change in staff. It took time to get used to Patrick and the rest of the new staff that came in but now we really feel like we are progressing. Maccabi’s goal is to promote as many players as possible to the First Team. To win the championship or cup is a big goal.”

Relationship with his father:

“My father raised me from a very early age and wanted me to go as far as possible. He told me ‘Whatever path you choose go all the way or don’t go at all’. I was able to get to where I am today together with the help of other professionals and I still have plenty to aspire to.”

Other things outside of football:

“I’m very interested in sport behavior, nutrition and proper rest. Maccabi has plenty of professionals that understand these topics and I can learn a lot from them.”

Guy Tzarfati’s young Yellow & Blue squad will look to keep up their positive momentum when they host Ashdod at Kiryat Shalom as the Ramle Stadium pitch is undergoing winterization. With two wins in a row, another victory will move them closer to the top of the table.

Following a long International break, Eliezer Ben Aharon’s Under 17 side will finally get back to action when they visit their Petach Tikva counterparts at 13:00.

The Under 16 club will head south to Beer Sheva as Eliezer Ben Aharon’s team sits in third place. With a win Maccabi “Eli Fuchs” could vault closer to first place.

Maccabi “Max” Haifa – Maccabi “Eldad” Tel Aviv, 10:30, Ketzef Haifa
Maccabi “Eldad” will travel north to Haifa in a crucial matchup against the Greens. With the two teams separated by only one point, the Under 15 squad will attempt to overtake their counterparts from the Carmel.

Amir Sofer’s side will host Ramat HaSharon Saturday morning at Kiryat Shalom. Following a disappointing loss last week, Maccabi “Ilan will look to get back onto the winning track.

Legends Club – Gadi Brumer

History in Short

From his early beginnings as a footballer all the way to his retirement, Gadi Brumer was Yellow & Blue through and through. Along with his twin Alon, the Brumer’s are considered the most successful and famous footballing brothers in Israel.

The central defender was born in South Africa on November 5, 1973 and made his debut with the First Team against Hapoel Petach Tikva when Tzvika Rosen promoted Brumer from the Youth Club during the 1990/91 season. The following campaign he won his first league title under the tutelage of Avram Grant.

Brumer became one of the pillars of the Yellow & Blue’s Starting XI for more than a decade and his decorated career included some amazing accomplishments along the way. From a trial at Manchester United to the relationship with his brother Alon who had a serious injury along with the injuries he suffered himself, Gadi was a mainstay at the Club as he turned into one of the greatest players in Maccabi’s history.

Top Moment

The Yellow & Blue Israeli International central defender had plenty of fine moments in his career. From his goals against Russia and Brazil for the Blue & White to his spectacular play for Maccabi he will always be considered one of the greats, however his goal against Tenerife was perhaps the most famous of his career. Amsterdam Business Students & the Maccabi Foundation

The EOS/VU Amsterdam Student Annual Business Trip visited the Maccabi Tel Aviv FC Foundation at Kiryat Shalom for an interactive and educational program about the Club and more. Foundation Head Josh Halickman greeted the students and went on an in depth tour of the Training Facility which also included a discussion about the history of Maccabi Tel Aviv, its present and future. The deep connection of Maccabi, Israel and the Jewish people were on center stage as the programs and plans for the Foundation were analyzed specifically looking at how all are intertwined an the massive impact the Yellow & Blue can make on social change and around the world.

In addition, Raymond Atteveld, Maccabi’s Assistant to Performance Manager, Patrick van Leeuwen addressed the group about the philosophy and changes that are occurring within the Club’s Youth Department and how that will positively effect those youngsters who are striving to become professional footballers.

Group organizer Veerle Voermans said: “The presentation was very inspiring and we had a lot of fun visiting Maccabi Tel Aviv and learning about the Foundation.” One of the participants Joep van Gelder added: “”It was an amazing experience to visit the Maccabi Tel Aviv FC Foundation and its passionate people – Josh in particular. The integration of all kinds of cultures is an example that should inspire many people worldwide.”

Elisha Levy’s Israel National Team features five Maccabi Tel Aviv representatives as they head to Albania. The Blue & White and Albania have the same amount of points and a win by either side will move them towards the top of Group G along with Spain and Italy.

Vidar Kjartansson – Croatia vs Iceland (12/11/16)

The Euro 2016 sensation will look to continue its run towards the World Cup in Russia when it visits the Maksimir Stadium in Zagreb, Croatia. The Maccabi striker hopes to take part in the match that will feature some of the biggest stars from Real Madrid, Juventus and others.

Predrag Rajikovic – Wales vs Serbia (12/11/16)

The Serbian National Team will kick off against Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and co. in Cardiff as the Yellow & Blue shot stopper will look play to after not featuring in the first two matchdays. Serbia is in first place on the table and a loss will push them back at least one position.

Egor Filipenka – Bulgaria vs Belarus (12/11/16)

Belarus is currently sitting in second to last place in Group A and on Saturday Filipenka’s National Team will attempt to come out of Sofia, Bulgaria with a positive result.

Haris Medunjanin – Greece vs Bosnia (13/11/16)

Bosnia will have a fantastic opportunity to move up in Group H as they visit Greece who find themselves three points ahead of Medunjanin’s National Team.

Shimon Peres & Maccabi Tel Aviv – The Exhibit

Maccabi Tel Aviv commemorated the life of Israel’s Ninth President Shimon Peres z”l at the most recent Europa League match against Alkmaar. A good friend of the Club, statesman, leader and dignitary, the former President was a true educator and guide when it came to peace and football.

Children from the Peres Center for Peace project “Twinned Peace Sports Schools” which was founded 20 years ago, accompanied the players onto the pitch prior to the match. This activity, among the many that the Center has established is a continuing legacy and vision of Shimon Peres who had said: “I hope that the day will come when battlefields will be replaced by the fields of sport.”


At the Stadium, a photo exhibit of the late Shimon Peres z”l participating in joint activities with the Club was presented. Former Maccabi Tel Aviv FC Captain Eran Zahavi attended the exposition and spoke of his close connection with Peres and about his last visit to the Peres Center for Peace when he was in Israel during the month of August. Zahavi also met with Yosef Avi Yair Angle, the long time Peres adviser who had also taken many of the pictures that were presented.

“Twinned Peace Sports Schools”
The project was launched in 2002, and brings together Jewish and Arab children aged 8-12 from various communities. The groups not only focus on sports activities, but also on combining peace building programs which are designed to break down barriers and stereotypes between the participants and foster values of peace and coexistence by changing attitudes toward the ‘other’.

The children who accompanied the players onto the pitch come from the twinned communities of Pardes Katz and Jaljulia. The two groups train together throughout the year and participate in joint programming where they learn about each other’s language, while discussing the importance of working together as a group. Hand in hand they break down barriers and make it clear that on the field of play the only language that is spoken is the language of football.

Peretz: “We want to give the fans their pride back”

Maccabi Tel Aviv is entering the International break after a disappointing draw in Netanya and find themselves in third place on the league table and without a goal in the last four matches in league and European play.

Eliel Peretz, who was thrust into action after an injury forced Haris Medunjanin out of the game discussed his feelings at the end of the contest: “We are very disappointed. We haven’t scored but we have to keep looking ahead as our next game is in two weeks. I don’t think it’s an issue of confidence but just a case of some bad luck. Even though we haven’t scored we’ve had some quality chances and have been controlling the ball.”

Feelings right before entering the match:

“Haris got hurt and the coach called me. I did what I know how to do best. Our next game is a tough away match. We’ll train hard and go into the match to win. We now have a week of practice ahead of us.”

About the fans:

“I felt the support of the fans and we all want to give them back their pride when we play against Kiryat Shemona. There’s a long road ahead and there are plenty of matches left in the season.”

Coming off the bench:

“There’s no question that a rotation is important as we are in three different competitions. There are players who are waiting for their turns patiently on the bench and I hope that I can continue to contribute to the club in the minutes that I am given.”

The Yellow & Blue’s Head Coach, Shota Arveladze addressed the media following his side’s Matchday Nine 0:0 draw at the Netanya Stadium. The Maccabi boss discussed the gap to the first place side, pressure, injuries and what he felt Petach Tikva did against his squad to split the points:

“The general picture against us is that the other teams park the bus as well as wasting time. But the boys will continue to fight for the team.”

Slow match:

“We have heavy legs and it was the slowest game that I’ve seen from Maccabi. We may have played bad games but this was the slowest game from the first minute and it tells me that we have the hardest schedule and we have a very short break for the players to rest. The National Team guys will go again as well. I don’t want to take anything from our opponent, they played well.”

Lots of chances:

“We had a lot of chances today and some players had two of three. We may have given some chances away but only a few. We had some injuries before the game, Oscar and Eden were both hurt but Nosa had some chances as did others. We need to find the ball. I don’t think this has anything to do with leadership.”

Injuries:

“If someone is injured we go on and we aren’t hiding anything. No one asked. Injuries are normal in football when someone is out one or two games. We want to play at a high level and we want to win.”

Pressure:

“We aren’t here to say that everything is good, but we have to look at the whole picture and not at just one bad run or a bad ten minutes. There is always pressure on every striker and when you want to be number one there is always pressure. You have to put your head down and keep on going.”

Five point gap to the top of the table:

“We try to take three points every game. Every team will lose and we can can win to get back the points. We need to concentrate and capture points.”

Maccabi & Petach Tikva draw 0:0

Maccabi Tel Aviv picked up a point in the title hunt as they went into the International break following a goalless draw against Maccabi Petach Tikva

Head Coach Shota Arveladze made cosmetic changes to his Starting XI from last week’s Europa League encounter as Nosa Igiebor and Avi Rikan were both in the lineup for Omri Ben Harush and Oscar Scarione. Predrag Rajikovic was in goal while Eitan Tibi, Tal Ben Haim and Eli Dasa rounded out the defense with Rikan. Captain Gal Alberman was the defensive midfielder while Haris Medunjanin and Igiebor were on his flanks as an attacking trio of Dor Micha, Tale Ben Chaim and Vidar Kjartansson provided the firepower up front.

Available on the bench were Barak Levy, Egor Filipenka, Barak Itzhaki, Sagiv Yehezkel, Omri Ben Harush, Eliel Peretz and Yossi Benayoun.

First Half
Both sides traded play in the midfield until the 17th minute when Maccabi had the first chance of the evening as Medunjanin crossed a superb ball to Igiebor but his header was off the mark. Ten minutes later the aforementioned Medunjanin came out of the match due to injury and was replaced by youngster Eliel Peretz.

In the 31st minute Guy Melamed had an in close opportunity but he skied his chance well over the bar. Two minutes later Kjartansson took a brilliant cross by Micha but his header was just off the mark while in the 38th minute the Icelander again missed a prime opportunity as the ball went wide of the goal. And would you believe it, number 24 would once more come up empty after an Alberman cross in front of Dani Amos as the match remained goalless into the break.

Second Half

The second half began just as the first did with very little action for the first 15 minutes or so when Rikan’s corner fooled Amos and almost landed up behind him. Two minutes later Barak Itzhaki came on for Alberman to try and spark the offense which he attempted to do off of a Peretz cross in the 65th minute but his effort missed the mark. A minute later, Kjartansson’s header was saved on the line while Micha’s 68th minute opportunity from Dasa went over the goal.

In the 72nd minute, Rikan’s screamer from 20 meters out flew over the bar and Igiebor’s 79th minute header also couldn’t find the back of the goal. Three minutes later Coach Arveladze made his final substitution inserting Yossi Benayoun for Dasa.

As the contest moved into injury time Micha had a fantastic chance to score but Amos was up to the task yet again to deny number 15 while Kjartansson’s opportunity was tipped away to safety by the Petach Tikva shot stopper. The referee blew the final whistle as the Yellow & Blue came up empty again on the goals for side but picked up a valuable point in the race for the championship.
