Maccabi landed. Mansford: “We are devastated”

Maccabi Tel Aviv landed this afternoon in Israel after a night where fans were violently attacked after returning from the Europa League match against Ajax at the Johan Cruyff arena in Amsterdam.

From the early hours of Friday, the Club was in direct contact wit the Foreign Ministry, the Israeli Embassy, the Sports and Culture Ministry, the National Security Council, and the Israel Football Association. During the day, the Club was updated that all the fans who were admitted to hospital to receive treatment for their injuries, were released and that contact was established with those who were out of reach during the night.
The owner Mitch Goldhar who arrived in Amsterdam to be with the team for the match against Ajax, spent the day meeting fans at their hotels, enquiring of their condition and well-being.

Maccabi’s CEO, Ben Mansford, said after the team landed: “Obviously we are absolutely devastated. We get on that plane on Wednesday to play a game of football and the reason why you are all at the airport is not because of a game of football. Thank god we believe that all of our fans were accounted for, we think there is a strong chance that all of them have been released from hospitals. Whilst that is great news compared to the news we had at 2-3 in the morning, I will feel that everyone at Maccabi Tel Aviv joins us – when everyone who traveled to Amsterdam to watch that game is back home safe in Israel.”
“Football has been my professional career and at times, risk elements from both teams are fine with each other. This was not connected to football and that is the reason why you are all here to report. Lots of people went to watch a football game and to support Maccabi Tel Aviv, to support Israel, to support the Star of David. For them to be running into rivers, to be kicked while defenseless on the floor, to be trying to suggest and beg people to believe that they are not Jewish. This is very sad times for us all given the last year and what we have had to experience.”
On what happened on the streets of Amsterdam overnight, Mansford added: “I think we can understand that as best as we can follow all the footage. Of course, there were one or two bits outside our hotel but nothing like what our fans had to experience especially around the train center which seemed to have been the beginning and epi-center of all of it. But I think it will take us days, weeks and even longer to digest truly all the different incidents and all the lessons that could be learned.”

On the owner Mitch Goldhar, who was present in Amsterdam, Mansford added: “I don’t you know if you are all aware but Mitch Goldhar, Jack Angelides with Avi Mizrahi all stayed, went around some fans and a number of hotels where fans were present in large contingence. So, I am so fortunate we have such an incredible owner. We all know Mitch’s background; we all know how supportive he is of this country. It must be another very sad to for him, but we couldn’t have a better owner to lead from the front at these times.”

The Maccabi CEO reflected on the support the club received from the moment the incidents began unfolding: “A huge credit to the Sports Ministry and the foreign ministry, Shino Zuartez, and Moran Meiri from the IFA who at 2-3 in the morning were mobilizing as I am sure you all saw. I also feel a strong sense of solidarity not just with our fellow clubs in Israel but also as you have all seen their messages from Beitar Jerusalem to aMaccabi Haifa and the list goes on. As we landed, we also saw a sense of solidarity from clubs across Europe – I think everybody knows what happened last night and clearly some lessons need to be learned

”.

Maccabi’s captain Eran Zahavi added: “We all saw what happened. It is an absolute disgrace. But this is the world we currently live in and sadly our fans felt threatened and experienced horrors. People traveled to watch a football game, and this is what happened. The club will do everything for the fans.”

Peretz: “We will continue learning from such opponents”

Maccabi suffered their fourth defeat in the Europa League phase going losing 5-0 to Ajax at the Johan Cruyff Arena. Dor Peretz who captained Maccabi on the night spoke at the end of the match: “We played against a very very good opponent. We wanted to get something out of here in terms of a result but sadly we didn’t” Peretz said. “We have only things to learn from a team of this calibre and we must continue moving forward.”

On the heavy defeat, Peretz continued: “Bigger teams than us suffer similar defeats out here, and while we are not feeling comfortable with such results, this was an opponent of the highest standard.”

As attention will now turn to Sunday’s league match away to Bnei Sakhnin, Peretz said: “We have the league which is our bread and butter and we must come well prepared.”

On Maccabi’s fourth defeat of the group phase, Peretz summed up: “We have still a long way to go. We are still far behind, especially if we see how well we managed to cope in the first two matches. We played well enough to deserve points but didn’t do it. We will continue learning from teams of this calibre and from the way they play. If we manage to do those things and play at such an intensity we will go a long way.”

Ahead of Sunday’s league match at Sakhnin, Peretz said: “We will have to recover quickly both physically and mentally as Sakhnin awaits on Sunday which is the most important task right now”.

Lazetic after of the defeat to Ajax

Maccabi beaten 5-0 by Ajax

Preview

Maccabi arrived at the Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam for the MD4 Europa league match against Ajax aiming to put an end to the run of three defeats from the opening three matches. But against the in-form Dutch giants who are unbeaten from three matches and currently fourth in the Europa League, as well as 2nd in the Dutch Eredivisie with 8 victories from 10 matches – Maccabi’s task will be extremely difficult.

Zarko Lazetic and his charges are followed by around 3000 travelling fans who made it all the way to Amsterdam to show their support including club owner, Mitch Goldhar.

Two who didn’t travel to Holland and will not be at Lazetic’s disposal are Roy Revivo and Osher Davida. While the 21-year-old left-back is still recovering from a knee injury he suffered in September and has yet to feature in the Europa League, Davida (23) is serving a one-match touchline ban following his dismissal against Real Sociedad on MD3.

Roi Mishpati who as named in the Israel national team squad for the matches against France and Belgium, kept his place in goal. Tyrese Asante, Nemanja Stojic and Raz Shlomo were named as three central defenders. Ido Shahar and Sagiv Jehezkel were drafted in as two wing-backs on the right and left respectively in a bid to combat Ajax’s game down the channels. Issouf Sissokho, Gabi Kanichowsky and Dor Peretz who captained the side, formed Maccabi’s midfield engine room. Elad Madmon and Dor Turgeman led Maccabi’s attack as the two youngsters will try breach Ajax’s defense that conceded only once in the Europa League and 9 in their domestic league.

On the substitutes bench Lazetic named goalkeeper Simon Sluga, Avishay Cohen, Stav Lemkin, Idan Nachmias, Eran Zahvi, Joris van Overeem, Yonas Malede, Weslley Patati, Henry Addo, Ofir Davidzada, Hisham Layous and Nir Bitton

First Half

A sea of colour and a wall of noise welcomed both teams onto the pitch as the Johan Cruyff Arena was packed to its 55,000 capacity. The 3000 Maccabi fans high up in the visiting sector began a pyrotechnics display right after kickoff. Four minutes after the start Brian Brobbey was sent clear through but as thenAjax striker rifled a left foot shot, Roi Mishpati charged off his line before the ball struck his to bounce out. In the 13th minute Ajax took the lead as Brobbey broke into the area and sent the ball across the face of goal for Bertrand Traore to toe poke it home at the far post.

Four minutes before the half hour mark, Kanichowsky was booked by Czech referee Ondrej Berka for what seemed like a harmless foul in the middle of the park. A minute later Ajax doubled their lead at the end of a spectacular move. Kenneth Taylor and Brobbey exchanged passes on the edge of the Maccabi area before the scorer turned provider while Taylor swept the ball past Mishpati.

The hosts continued to run riot and in the 39th minute Mika Godts proved too powerful for the visiting defense as he picked the ball deep inside Maccabi’s half before clinically firing in to make it 3-0. On the stroke of halftime Moshpati prevented further embarrassment as he clawed the ball from his goalmouth to prevent Brobbey from scoring his second and Ajax their fourth.

Second Half

Dor Peretz had half a chance at the start of the second half as he charged through from the halfway line but Ajax’s defense managed to clear the danger before Maccabi’s captain on the night could manage a shot on goal.

In the 59th minute Maccabi conceded an indirect free kick inside their own penalty box in bizarre circumstances. Mishpati’s attempt of a pass to Raz Shlomo struck his other foot before Brobbey blasted his shot from 10 metres into the top corner to make it four. Maccabi’s best chance to score came minutes later as Madmon’s close range effort forced Remko Pasveer to a reflex save. Kian Fitz-Jim scored the fifth on 79 as he chested the ball and sent a volley that bounced in above Mishpati. Lazetic reacted with four changes as Ofir Dabidzada, Joris van Overeem, Weslley Patati and Henry Addo replaced Sagiv Jehezkel, Ido Shahar, Kanichowsky and Madmon on 72. Ajax had the ball in Mishpati’s net two minutes later but the goal was disallowed for offside following the intervention of VAR. Eran Zahavi replaced Turgeman on 82 as the veteran striker came on for the closing stages.

Addo and Patati went into the referee’s book as the Ghanian saw yellow for simulation when the Ghanian was clearly fouled while the Btazilian was cautioned as nothing went Maccabi’s way on the night. Both players combined inside injury time as Patati released Addo but the Ajax over managed to block.

Shahar: “No time to sulk, need to lift ourselves ahead of Ajax”

Ido Shahar made a second half substitute appearance at Turner stadium as he came on at a crucial minute against Hapoel Kiryat Shmona but was unable to help the side avoid the 1-0 defeat. The 23-year-old stepped onto the pitch at Turner seconds before Eran Zahavi had a penalty saved while four minutes later Mohamad Abu Rumi scored the only goal of the game to inflict Maccabi their second league defeat. “We are disappointed we didn’t win” Shahar said at the post match press conference, “But we don’t have too much time to sulk because we have a match on Thursday (Ajax away) and there is a long season ahead of us with many targets both on the league and in Europe.”

“We didn’t want to lose the match. After the victory over Maccabi Haifa we felt that we were in a good momentum and that victory was important. But things like that happen in football. We did everything we could to try win the match and we are sorry for the fans who saw us lose for three matches in succession. I only have good words to say about the fans who travelled all the way to Be’ersheva on a day like this and I am sorry we didn’t win.”

“There are no easy matches” Shahar said, “We tend to look at it on a game by game basis. Now we have Ajax first. You saw that in Europe we come to win every game even when we are facing big opponents. We take the initiative in every game even against opponents that are regarded to be favorites against us. This will not be any different in Holland as we will also travel there with the intention of winning. We placed ourselves in a position where we have plenty of matches to play. This is every player’s dream to participate in such matches and play as many matches in a season.”
