Yeini: “We really believe in ourselves as a team”

Maccabi’s 35-year old skipper Sheran Yeini spoke about the team recovering from the two points dropped at Ashdod: “We really believe in our ability and I don’t think there is a reason for any pressure, we are athletes competing in sport and can’t always guarantee victories. An away match at Ashdod is a tough fixture for any team. Ashdod are an excellent side, we reached our chances and strongly believe in ourselves as a team”.

Yeini, who is playing his 19th season at Maccabi paid tributes to the fans for their support: “I don’t think I ever witnessed in all my years at Maccabi such support specifically at this stadium in Ashdod. It was fantastic as with this level of support we felt it was like a home match. The fans’ support is obviously important for us as the fact they are showing their connection to us is good. They love to see us play and all want to be part of the teams’ success. We expect to see them all at Bloomfield on Saturday”.

Putting a smile on kids faces at Shamir medical center

The Maccabi Tel Aviv foundation continues its’ annual activities in the community as five first team players visited the Shamir Medical center at Assaf Harofeh ahead of Rosh Hashana. Shahar Piven, Dor Pertetz, Ofir Davidzada, Daniel Peretz and Gabi Kanichowsky handed official souvenirs to hospitalized kids in the various wards.

To sum-up the visit, Dor Peretz spoke about the privilege of making kids happy: “This is one of the annual activities organized by the Maccabi foundation which we take part in and are privilege to do so.

Anything we can do to bring a smile to a child’s face, by giving them a present, hopefully it helps a little bit. If we can put a smile on faces then that’s good.”

“A season is a marathon, one can’t win every game”

After three victories from the opening three league matches Maccabi Tel Aviv dropped points as Ashdod which held the Yellow and Blue to a 0-0 draw. Daniel Peretz, who kept a clean sheet for the third match this season, summed up what happened on the pitch at the Yud Alef stadium and related to the issue of his international call-up.

The 22-year-old keeper said after the game which saw his side miss a first half penalty before VAR denied Maccabi a late winner by disallowing a goal for offside: “I am not broken at all. This is part of football. We could have won the game as we were the better side, created plenty of chances against a side that defended a lot and made our lives difficult. Sadly, the ball didn’t go in”.

Peretz, who was named man of the match for another spectacular save he made which kept his goal locked once again, added: “Obviously I would prefer if another player would have been named man of the match and we would have scored goals and won the game but it doesn’t always happen. We struggled a bit today upfront, but still could have won the game as we created chances in the first half and had we scored the game would have developed completely different”.

Peretz, who has been a regular with Israel’s Under 21’s but has been on the verge of a call-up to the senior side, said: “I feel ready and its’ a privilege to represent your country and play for either the national team or the U21’s. I will play for whichever team that calls me up. I will accept this with open arms and just be happy to represent either team. They are both two amazing stages and as a player of Israel’s national teams I will be happy to represent my country”.

On the disappointment of celebrating a late goal which was chalked off by VAR, Peretz revealed: “I was delighted when we scored that 90th minute goal which was a reward for all our efforts throughout the game. But when the referee started making his way towards the VAR screen I guessed what was about to happen because they only do so when it is a 100% certain. We still had 8 minutes and I believed we are capable of scoring but ultimately it didn’t happen”.

Looking ahead at the remainder of the season, Perretz said: “A season is a marathon and we know we can’t win every match even though this is what we aim for. We are realistic enough to know that it will not happen. Ashdod are a tough side and we know they will cause other teams problems especially in this stadium”

MACCABI HELD TO 0-0 IN ASHDOD

Preview

Maccabi Tel Aviv arrived at the Yud Alef stadium ahead of the MD4 league encounter against Ashdod SC aiming to continue their perfect start to the season. Vladimir Ivic whose side recorded three victories from the opening three league matches against Maccabi Bnei Reineh, Hapoel Hadera and Ironi Kiryat Shmona with an impressive 14-1 goal record. Maccabi’s opponents Ashdod, coached by Ran Ben Shimon, experienced an indifferent start to the campaign winning 2 and losing 1 which placed them fourth in the table with six points.

Ivic welcomed Nir Bitton back into the side as the 30-year-old central defender returned for the first time to his old stomping ground he left nine years ago before joining Scottish giants Celtic. Prior to kick-off, Bitton was handed a framed shirt as tribute for his services to the Ashdod club. Bitton, lined-up alongside Sheran Yeini and Enric Saborit as the three central defenders with Andre Geraldes and Ofir Davidzada completing Maccabi’s defensive line. Dan Glazer as the anchor-man welcomed back an old partner to the midfield engine room as Dor Peretz was handed his first start since re-joining the club. Gabi Kanichowsky who scored a brace against Kiryat Shmona last week kept his place in the starting line-up alongside Parfait Guiagon who scored Maccabi’s third. In the absence of Djordje Jovanovic who was serving his one-match touchline ban due to his sending off against Kiryat Shmona, Eran Zahavi led the line.

New signing Derrick Lukassen, made his first appearance in the squad as the Dutch central defender was named by Ivic amongst the substitutes. Having recovered from the ankle injury he sustained in Nice a fortnight ago, Lukassen’s fellow Dutchman Joris van Overeem, returned to the squad for the first time. Alongside the Dutch duo, Ivic named goalkeeper Daniel Tenenbaum, Dan Biton, Oscar Gloukh, Avi Rikan, Eyal Golasa, Maor Kandil and Matan Hozez who were all waiting for their chance to make an impact.

First Half

Some 4500 traveling Maccabi fans filled the majority of the stadium cheering the team on right from the start. Dor Peretz making his debut start in midfield created time and space on the ball as he broke through the middle but miscued his pass. Parfait Guiagon’s silky skills helped the diminutive midfielder win a corner which was cleared by Ashdod’s defence as Maccabi dominated the early stages. In the 12th minute however, the young Ivorian dribbled across the box and was tripped by a defender as referee Orel Grinfeld awarded a penalty. Eran Zahavi stepped up to take the spot kick but somehow lost his footing and managed to send the penalty over the crossbar to keep the score at 0-0.

In the 24th minute Ofir Davidzada’s cross from the left reached Andre Geraldes at the opposite flank before the Portuguese cut the ball back to Gabi Kanichowsky who flashed a shot wide of the post. Kanichowsky continued to look lively as four minutes later Sheran Yeini won a tackle in midfield and found the industrious midfielder who sent a weak left foot shot which was easily collected by Yoav Gerafi in Ashdod’s goal.

In the 38th minute and against the run of play Ashdod reached a glorious chance to break the deadlock. Hamoudi Kna’an raced clear through from the middle of the park before Daniel Peretz charged off his line and made a spectacular save to keep his goal locked. At the opposite end on 41 Dor Peretz came close as he met Kanichowsky’s corner with a diving header which was blocked by an Ashdod defender. Maccabi increased the pressure in a bid to translate their dominance to a goal before the break as the ball continued to travel across the hosts’ penalty area.

Zahavi teed-up Guiagon on the edge of the area before the Ivorian’s low powerful drive was caught by Gerafi in what proved to be the final action of the first period.

Second Half

With no changes to either side after the interval, a fireworks display from the away end in the 47th minute stopped the game for 5 minutes. AZfter all the smoke cleared and play was resumed, Maccabi continued to press Ashdod trying to carve an opening.

Ivic made his first change after the hour mark as Oscar Gloukh came in for Peretz while Matan Hozez replaced Guiagon in the 67th minute. Six minutes after their introduction, Hozez was let down by his first touch as he tried meeting Davidzada’s cross from the left and as Ashdod’s defence struggled to clear the danger, Gloukh fired the loose ball high over the crossbar. Two minutes later, Ashdod’s substitute Adir Levy forced Peretz to dive to his right and save a dangerous low drive which Maccabi’s keeper managed to turn for a corner.

As the clock kept ticking, Enric Saborit tried his luck with a long range effort in the 80th minute only to be denied by the alerted Gerafi. Ashdod’s keeper pulled a stunning save in the 87th minute this time to keep out Hozez’s close range effort following a pinpoint Saborit square ball. In a last throw of the dice Ivic made a triple change on 88 as Derrick Lukassen, Joris van Overeem and Dan Biton came in for Yeini, Dan Glazer, and Kanichowsky. In their first touch of the ball Biton whipped in a free kick which reached Lukassen who managed to push the ball in off the post and past Gerafi. But Lukassen’s celebrations were short-lived as the goal was disallowed by referee Orel Grinfeld who was called to review the incident by VAR.

Despite 8 minutes of added time Ashdod managed to hang on as the hosts celebrated the point at the final whistle. The visitors on the other hand dropped points for the first time this season as the point gained took Maccabi’s tally to 10 points from a possible 12 and a home match against Beitar Jerusalem on September 17th.

“If I would have successfully converted the penalty things would have been different”.

After the game which saw Maccabi drop points for the first time this season Zahavi, who could have broken the deadlock but slipped and sent his spot-kick over the crossbar, admitted after the match: “I slipped before the penalty which was unlucky”, Zahavi said. “If I would have scored the penalty it would have looked totally different for us, maybe it would have been an easier game. It is a pity, we dropped two important points in the rave but we still have a long season ahead and we will keep on doing everything to get the result we want”.

On the difficult match against a tough opponent, Zahavi added: “It was very difficult to play against a side that defends so deep with so many players inside their own half. I think we created a lot of chances. We had shots on goal and had we been accurate on the final delivery we could have scored. But today it didn’t happen and we will look forward. We found solutions in the past against similar opponents but today it just didn’t happen. I take responsibility for missing the penalty but we will take the positives from this match eventhough it is only one point”.

Ivic: “Disapointed with the result. There is room for improvement”

Maccabi’s coach Vladimir Ivic didn’t hide his disappointment from the 0-0 draw against Ashdod SC on Saturday. At the end of the match the coach who saw his charges drop points for the first time this season, said: “We knew before the game that we should expect a tough opponent who played exactly how we expected them to play – with many players behind the ball. I believe that in the first half we were the better side, created enough chances to score but we can’t be satisfied with the result or our performance in parts of the game. There were moments that we played better and moments we didn’t make enough movements which is something we should work on”.

On his team’s inability to score for the first time in the league, Ivic added: “We need to improve our attacking game. We tried to do something a little different in the game with the players who played close to Eran (Zahavi) so they could reach chances. It was difficult. We didn’t score today which is the reason why we didn’t collect three points”.

Watch: Glazer ahead of Ashdod

Maccabi Tel Aviv travel to the Yud Alef stadium on Saturday (20:15) ahead of the fourth league round against Ashdod SC. Maccabi’s midfielder Dan Glazer spoke at the press conference about the team’s preparations ahead of the match.

Ashdod is a very good opponent especially in their home ground which we all know how it is to play there. The statistics of that ground speak for themselves but we know we will be prepared”.

The 25-year-old midfielder who played an integral part in Maccabi’s start to the season of three wins from the opening three matches, acknowledged the fact that the 3-1 victory over Kiryat Shmona dented the unblemished start to the campaign: “We know we didn’t have a perfect match against Kiryat Shmona, as we were not happy with our performance. Two days after the match we already analyzed the video with our mistakes, worked on them in training and hopefully will correct them”.

On his personal goals for the campaign, Glazer said: “I would like to play a key role in the team but also to improve on my statistics”.

Glazer refused to reveal the content of the personal conversations he has with his close friend and former teammate, Yonatan Cohen when asked about the chances of a potential return: “I will keep our conversations to myself, but I still miss him and hope he returns. Every player has his journey and while I have a big dream to play in Europe, I am currently playing for a European club and I am happy where I am. Hopefully, I will fulfill my dream one day, but for the moment I am enjoying every single day which is the most important thing”.

It is going to be a tough match against a strong opponent, a team that wants to play and knows how to attack and defend with quality players all over the park and a very good coach”.
