Second in the all time appearances chart. Watch Yeini

Sheran Yeini’s second half substitute appearance against Hapoel Tel Aviv in Monday’s derby was his 518th appearance for Maccabi in all competitions. The 35-year-old captain who made his senior debut for Maccabi against Sakhnin in 2004 spoke about how his career evolved and took him this far: “I never thought about breaking any Maccabi records and find myself so high up in the appearances list. I thought about moving abroad, to Europe as my dream was to play for Ajax but I am glad with the way my career panned out. I started my senior in a Toto Cup match against Bnei Sakhnin, and I played in the middle against a player by the name of (Ernst) Etchi who was a giant of a man and as much as I am slim now I was even smaller then. I remember a few tough tackles with him as he gave me a welcoming reception to senior football”. Yeini, who leapfrogged past Eli Driks to capture the second place behind Miko Belo who made 599 appearances for Maccabi, added: “To reach this landmark now especially at such a match is very exciting”.

Ahead of Maccabi’s run-in, Yeini remained adamant: “Maccabi’s aim is to win all the time and collect as many points as possible. Sadly the victory in our last game didn’t bring us any closer so that we could still compete for the league title. What is important for us is to fight for titles, but if we are too far behind then we must do our best to collect as many points as possible for our remaining matches”.

For the 14th time: Maccabi ‘Shahar’ wins Youth Cup

Maccabi Tel Aviv ‘Shahar’ set a new Israeli record by winning the Youth Cup for the 14th time after beating Maccabi Petah Tikva 3-0 in Tuesday’s Youth Cup Final which was played at Netanya. Bar Lin (33,36) scored twice in the space of three first half minutes and Oscar Gloukh (79) who came off the bench sealed the victory for Peter van Den Berg’s side.
Maccabi ‘Shahar’ arrived at the Netanya stadium on the back of two successive defeats to Hapoel Be’ersheva and Bnei Sakhnin that saw them concede pole position in the table to Ashdod – the team they knocked out in the Semi Final. Petah Tikva came close to score in the opening minute but Shalev Daniel’s shot shaved the crossbar. Bar Lin set up Orel Baye in the 13th minute but the winger’s shot was caught by Petah Tikva’s keeper Maor Erlich. Four minutes later, Baye’s cut-back reached Lin in a dangerous position only for his shot to be blocked for a corner. Maccabi continued to look the dangerous side as Carlos Rivera’s through ball to Lin on 29 resulted with another save by Erlich in Petah Tikva’s goal. Three minutes after the half hour mark, Erlich could do nothing to prevent Maccabi from taking the lead. Roei Nawai headed the ball towards Lin who cut inside from the right flank before unleashing a powerful shot that deflected off a Petah Tikva defender to loop over the keeper and put Maccabi in front.Petah Tikva tried to level the score and sent players forward for a set piece but were caught on the counter attack. Baye charged forward and spotted Lin unmarked before the midfielder kept his calm and slotted in his and Maccabi’s second on 36.The second period was dominated by Petah Tikva’s attempts to cut the deficit and claw their way back into the game, while Maccabi tried increasing their lead. Rivera came close in the 66th minute but forced a save from Erlich before Tomer Alon denied Ariel Lugasi at the opposite end two minutes later.Twenty four hours after playing 78 minutes at Bloomfield in the first team’s 5-0 derby victory over Hapoel Tel Aviv, Oscar Gloukh was given a chance to re-join his fellow young teammates as he replaced Ori Halevi in the 72nd minute. Four minutes after his introduction, Gloukh exchanged passes with Linonly for a Petah Tikva defender to block the shot and deny the midfielder a hat trick. In the 78th minute however, Maccabi took the tie beyond Petah Tikva’s reach after Rivera and Baye had their initial efforts blocked as Gloukh pounced on the rebound and blasted in the third. With Maccabi’s owner’s representative Jack Angelides watching from the stands alongside the club’s management and the entire first team coaching staff, the U-19’s lifted the Avi Ran Youth Cup. Having won the Cup for the first time since the 2010/11 season, Maccabi ‘Shahar’ could now return to focus their efforts on the league in an attempt to emulate the achievement of that season by winning the double. Maccabi Tel Aviv: Tomer Alon, Ilay Tomer (Ari Merenstein 85), , Shon Edri, Adir Cordoba, Roy Revivo, Roei Nawi, Yonatan Paz (Anar Ushmandi 66), Bar Lin (Mohamad Abu Ayash 85), Ori Halevi (Oscar Gloukh 72), Orel Baye, Carlos Rivera (Ido Mizrahi 85).

The crazy numbers following the 5-0 derby victory

An unforgettable night that resulted with a 5-0 Maccabi victory over Hapoel in the Tel Aviv derby. The day after the game and following the display and extra ordinary result we discovered some very interesting stats.

Eight years without a defeat in the derby

The 5-0 victory in Monday’s derby equaled the record victory in derbies which was achieved in 1970 and in 2016.

Maccabi’s unbeaten record

205 league matches have passed since the 5-0 victory and the derby which was the last time Maccabi won by a five goal margin.

Maccabi set a new all-time record of a 12 victory gap from Hapoel (48-46) as after 162 derbies played in the league Maccabi won 58, drawn 58 while Hapoel won 46 times.

Stipe Perica’s goal was the 200th league goal scored by a Maccabi player in Tel Aviv derbies as the current all time goal record is 200-154.

Maccabi’s last defeat in a Tel Aviv derby was recorded in the 2013/14 season on April 26th 2014 eight years ago almost to the day and exactly 2,922 days ago.

Respect: Yeini captures 2nd place in the all time appearance record

Sheran Yeini reached an impressive landmark as the 35-year-old veteran captain who made a second half substitute appearance in the derby made his 518th appearance for Maccabi in all competitions. Yeini, leapfrogged Eli Driks to capture the second place in the all-time appearance record. The only player ahead of Yeini is Miko Belo, who leads the all-time appearance record with 599.

The veteran Maccabi speaker, reached another landmark as he made his 29th appearance in Tel Aviv derbies to go level with two former legends Benny Tabak and Avi Nimni as the trio trail Miko Belo (33) by four derbies.

How many goals has Maccabi scored from a direct corner?

Djordje Jovanovic became the second player in Maccabi’s history (together with Vidar Kjratansson) who scored in his first two derbies.

The 23-year old Serbian forward scored a brace to take his tally in Tel Avi derbies to three goals with one derby still left to play. Only Eran Zahavi who scored 5 goals in the 2014 season and Eli Dricks with 4 in 1993 – scored more goals in derbies during one season.

Avi Rikan who scored twice and assisted another, was responsible for the fifth ever Maccabi goal directly from a corner. Rikan’s 72nd minute corner was the 97th goal scored from a direct corner in Israel’s league history and the first since the 2017/18 season.

Shiye Glazer scored three similar goals between 1958-1961 while Benny Tabak scored Maccabi’s last goal from a corner against Maccabi Netanya in December 1977.

In a symbolic manner, the memorable night of Maccabi’s number 22 (Rikan) was the 22nd time in Maccabi’s history that five second half goals are scored – and the first time since the 6-0 win over Maccabi Haifa in May 2016.

Legends Club: Avi Nimni

Avi Nimni, the player who gave Maccabi fans some of the finest moments, celebrates his 50th birthday today, April 26th. In his honor, the Legends Club looks back at his illustrious career, one of Maccabi Tel Aviv’s greatest, if not the greatest of them all. Nimni was born in 1972 and played with the club for nearly two decades, playing 18 seasons in Yellow & Blue. By scoring 194 league goals, he is the club’s all-time leading scorer.

Nimni went through the Maccabi Tel Aviv Youth Department and at the age of 18 made his first team debut in the second to last match of the 1989/90 season against Hapoel Kfar Saba. The following season he was a regular in the starting lineup and scored 10 goals across all competitions. Nimni’s first hat trick came in a 3:3 draw against Hapoel Petah Tikva when he was just 19 years of age in the 1991/92 championship season. During that same campaign the left footed midfielder scored 15 league goals and picked up his first title. Nimni proved to be a very important piece of the Maccabi puzzle over the next decade and played a huge part of the success of the club scoring in double digits in his first 7 seasons.

1991/92 4:0 Derby

Number 8 was a dominating figure as the club collected many titles over the first half of the 1990’s. Anytime Maccabi needed an important goal, Nimni was there especially during the Double Season of 1995/96. Nimni scored the goal that finished off the Match of the Season against Maccabi Haifa, he found the back of the goal in the State Cup Final and also scored the lone marker in the championship match against Beitar Jerusalem. Over the course his career, many players left or retired but Nimni remained a true Yellow & Blue. Other than a short spell at Spanish side Atletico Madrid and English outfit Derby County, the majority of Nimni’s career was spent at Kiryat Shalom. After a season in England, Nimni came back and scored 25 league goals to win the 2000/01 goal scoring title and also picked up a State Cup with a 3:0 victory over Maccabi Petah Tikva.

Nimni scores the 1995/96 Championship Goal

After winning another State Cup, Nimni spent the 2002/03 season between the Starting XI and the bench. But number 8 got back into the swing of things just in time. Six goals in the final 3-matches gave Maccabi a better goal differential over Maccabi Haifa to win the title. Following the championship, Nimni headed to Beitar Jerusalem where he played for two seasons before returning to the Yellow & Blue for the final three years of his career which ended after the 2007/08 campaign.

Nimni’s Hat-trick against Bnei Yehuda in 2002/03

His 194 all-time league goals rank third just behind Alon Mizrachi and Oded Macness. As the Club’s leading goal scorer he finds himself ahead of one of Maccabi’s legendary players in Sheya Glazer who found the back of the goal 130 times. Nimni also had a marvelous career for the Israel National Team making 80 appearances for the Blue & White, scoring 17 times for his country. After his playing career, Nimni was the Club’s manager between 2008-2011, winning the Toto Cup in the 2008/09 season.

Rikan: “You don’t get too many moments like that”

The 33-year-old midfielder who was instrumental in the 5-0 derby victory by scoring a brace and assisting another admitted: “I didn’t play too much lately but your character is judged in such times” Avi Rikan said. The veteran midfielder who joined Maccabi in 2015, added: “One has to work hard and train on a daily basis. I speak a lot with my teammates who are also in a similar situation and tell them that I had a long career and would like to extend it and enjoy it for as long as I possibly can. One has to work hard in order to be able to have such energies in matches like that. If I would have put my hands up and admitted defeat, I wouldn’t have been able to perform like I did today. I am part of a big club and a very strong team and will always be there to help when I am needed. A professional player’s career ends fast and I wish to extend it for as long as I possibly can. There are not many moments like that in a player’s career”.

MACCABI BEATS HAPOEL 5-0 IN DERBY

Preview

Ranked third in the table with 56 points from 30 matches and having failed to register a victory in their four opening Playoff matches, Maccabi arrived at Bloomfield stadium for the Tel Aviv derby.

The two disappointing back-to-back defeats to Hapoel Be’ersheva, a 1-0 defeat at Turner stadium in the league followed by a 3-1 State Cup Semi Final exit at Bloomfield three days later – ended all hopes of winning a trophy this season.

But with six matches still left to play in the 2021/22 campaign, Maccabi Tel Aviv’s coach Mladen Krstajic and his players have plenty to play for. Runaway leaders Maccabi Haifa are well beyond Maccabi’s reach as they are 13 points ahead in the table, but a seven point gap behind Be’ersheva is not something which can’t be achieved. While Maccabi failed to register a victory in its’ five recent League and Cup matches, when it comes to Tel Aviv derbies their unbeaten run against Hapoel now stretches to 21 matches in all competitions. The last Hapoel derby victory was recorded almost eight years ago in the 2013/14 season as Paulo Sousa was then in charge of the Yellow and Blue with Eran Zahavi scoring Maccabi’s consolation goal. Oscar Garcia, Pako Ayestaran, Slavisa Jokanovic, Peter Bosz, Shota Arveladze, Jordi Cruyff, Lito Vidigal, Cruyff for a second stint, Vladimir Ivic, Giorgios Donis, Patrick van Leeuwen and Barak Itzhaki hadn’t lost a Tel Aviv derby as coaches since.

Krstajic, who had no intention of being the first coach to end that run made several changes from the side that was knocked out of the State Cup as Daniel Peretz returned to goal and replaced Daniel Tenenbaum.

Josue Sa, was named as the defensive partner of Enric Saborit right in front of Peretz with Shahar Piven and Ofir Davidzada completing the back-four on the right and left respectively. Dan Glazer led the team out wearing the captain’s armband while Eyal Golasa who made a second half substitute appearances against Be’ersheva was also assigned to the midfield engine room. Avi Rikan and Oscar Gloukh both kept their places to complete a strong four-man midfield. Djordje Jovanovic who scored a late winner in the previous derby, led the line together with his striking partner Stipe Perica as the Balkan duo were facing two young Hapoel central defenders in Or Israelof and Stav Lemkin.

First Half

The Tel Aviv derby, in what has become an almost standard procedure, began with a barrage of flares and smoke grenades which were thrown onto the pitch immediately after kick-off causing a delay of several minutes. When the smoke finally cleared and visibility improved around 10 minutes later, referee Eitan Shmuelevic restarted the match.

The opening stages of the match were mostly at the centre of the pitch as tackles were flying thick and fast. Daniel Peretz seemed to be the busy keeper of the two as he was forced to stretch himself to keep out a dangerous Freddy Plumain header in the 11th minute following a Shlomi Azulay cross. Two minutes later at the opposite end Maccabi came close to break the deadlock as Avi Rikan cancelled Hapoel’s defence with a perfect dipping long ball into the path Djordje Jovanovic. The 22-year-old forward brought the ball down with a perfect first touch only to be denied by goalkeeper Bogdan Sarnavskyi who charged off his line to catch the Serb’s attempt of a chip.

Moments later, Dan Glazer stopped a Doron Leidner counter attack with a foul and consequently picked his 11th booking of the season. Azulay tried curling the resulting free kick but Peretz reacted well to catch the ball which was making its way into the top corner.

As the fourth official indicated 12 minutes of added time to the first half, Maccabi came close once again as Jovanovic rose high to meet Ofir Davidzada’s cross and send a header goal-bound. Sarnavskyi pulled a reflex save and needed to come to the rescue once again to keep out Stipe Perica’s rebound. Within a minute Hapoel were reduced to 10 men after Shai Elias was sent off following the intervention of VAR as he was spotted spitting at Enric Saborit.

Second Half

Mladen Krstajic made his first change after the interval as Matan Baltaxa replaced Davidzada at the restart. Maccabi’s claims for a penalty in the 51st minute after the ball struck Or Israelof’s hand inside the area were waved by Shmuelevic. But in the 56th minute the deadlock was finally broken at the end of a lethal Maccabi counter attack. Perica skipped past an Israelof tackle to charge down the right flank before sending a pinpoint cross towards Jovanovic who volleyed home giving Sarnavskyi no chance.

Avi Rikan forced a save from Hapoel’s keeper in the 59th minute as his low drive from the edge of the area was turned out for a corner. In the 63rd minute Krstajic made a double change as Andre Gerlades replaced the tired Shahar Piven while Gabi Kanichowsky came in for Eyal Golasa.

The dual between Jovanovic and Sarnavskyi continued in the 66th minute as the Serbian forward curled a surprising low drive that Hapoel’s keeper pushed out for another corner.

Avi Rikan flashed a low drive that almost doubled the score three minutes later. In the 63rd minute Krstajic made a double change as Andre Gerlades replaced the tired Shahar Piven while Gabi Kanichowsky came in for Eyal Golasa.

The dual between Jovanovic and Hapoel’s keeper continued in the 66th minute as the Serbian forward curled a surprising low drive from the edge of the area that Sarnavskyi pushed out for a corner.

Josue Sa should have opened his Maccabi account and double the lead on 69 as he found himself in an excellent position to score. The Portuguese central defender chested down a Saborit header following Rikan’s corner but sliced his shot wide of the post when it seemed easier to score. In the 72nd minute however, Bloomfield erupted once again as Rikan curled another corner which was spilled by Sarnavskyi into his net to double the score. Three minutes Rikan didn’t need any help from anyone. Oscar Gloukh exchanged passes with Saborit to break into the area and fire a shot which was blocked by an Hapoel defender before Rikan pounced onto the rebound and volleyed home Maccabi’s third and his second on the night. Krstajic made his fourth and fifth changes as Glazer and Gloukh bowed out and were replaced by Sheran Yeini and Eylon Almog on 76.

In the 80th minute Rikan added an assist to his brace. A counter attack which began with Almog reached the veteran midfielder who released Jovanovic with a perfectly timed pass. Jovanovic, lifted the ball over the keeper to score his second on the night and Maccabi’s fourth. The goal fest continued in the 85th minute with Almog playing an instrumental role as his accurate cross allowed Perica to join-in the celebration and seal the score at 5-0.

The numbers: Yeini following Nimni and Tabbak
