Drums and banners welcome again at Bloomfield

After extensive negotiations and great efforts by Maccabi Tel Aviv, agreement has been reached with the police and other authorities to readmit supporter aids — mainly drums and banners — for home games at Bloomfield.

The decision will be implemented immediately and banners and drums will be allowed in for the next home game on Monday against Hapoel Raanana (kickoff at 20:15).

As the title race hots up, the addition of supporter aids will be a bonus for the club and we hope it will help bring more success.

We do, however, expect our supporters to maintain their decorum at all times and not to spoil the equipment.

Ofoedu: We should have killed it off

Chico Ofoedu, who scored Maccabi Tel Aviv’ goal in their 1-1 draw with Hapoel Beersheba said he was disappointed with the outcome of Wednesday’s TASE Premier League clash and had expected to win.

“My goal was not enough to win this match and I hope that in the next game we will win,” the striker said.

“I’m happy and sad at the same time because our form and fortitude were good, but my goal was not enough.”

“We had many chances in the second half and we should have killed off the game but we depend only on ourselves and the points we will accrue in our next games. This is a tough season and we keep that in mind, although we concentrate only on ourselves,” he said.

Ivic: We should have scored more

Maccabi Tel Aviv ended their away encounter with Hapoel Beersheba in a fast-paced 1-1 draw on Wednesday and coach Vladimir Ivic said his charges were the better side and should have scored more goals.

“I feel we deserved more than just a point, we missed so many chances today,” Ivic said.

“We could have scored five or six goals but in the first half we created only two chances and I don’t know what happened to our attack but the second period saw us create many chances to attack,” the Serbian coach added.

Ivic said that despite the dropped points, there were still plenty more games and lots of points on offer and that he was preparing for a close-run race for the title all the way to the end.

Ivic praised the hosts on the night and said they deserved to be taken seriously.

“Hapoel Beersheba are a very good side, they have won three championships in the past five seasons but today we proved that in all departments and if you fail to score you get punished, and that is exactly what happened,” he said.

Beersheba hold Maccabi to 1-1 draw

Hapoel Beersheba spoiled Maccabi Tel Aviv’s perfect season away record on Wednesday in a thrilling 1-1 draw at Toto Turner Stadium.

A fast-paced match improved significantly in the second half with Maccabi retaining the bulk of possession and the better chances but Vladimir Ivic’s players were undone by a swift counterattack that brought Beersheba level for a share of the points.

A fast-paced first half was generally untidy as both teams managed two shots on goal, although they were not dangerous enough to force the goalkeepers into evasive action.

The second period was far more organised and Chico Ofoedu finally put Maccabi ahead in the 52nd minute. A well worked goal that involved four players ended with Yonatan Cohen in the box with his back to the goal setting up the Ofoedu’s scoring shot from seven metres out.

Maccabi then suddenly began piling on the pressure and Avi Rikan had his own chance to score in the 58th minute but he shot directly at Ernests Shetkos in the Beersheba goal.

Maccabi were piling men forward and paid the price in the 68th minute when Niv Zrihan equalised from a similar situation to Ofoedu’s goal as he stabbed the ball past Daniel Tenenbaum in the Maccabi goal with his left foot as he advanced forward after a sharp cross in from the left by Nigel Hasselbaink.

The Beersheba forward missed his first opportunity but managed to sneak past the Maccabi defence to score.

Substitute Eylon Almog had an excellent chance to restore Maccabi’s lead in the 84th minute but Shetkos, who was having a heroic night, managed to get in the way of the Tel Aviv player’s shot and he deflected the ball to safety.

The tempo remained high to the end with Maccabi more dominant and controlling play, but they were unable to add to their tally.

Maccabi’s positive record against Beersheba

Maccabi Tel Aviv will play at Turner Stadium against Hapoel Beersheba tonight (kickoff at 20:15).

Maccabi go into the match with a string of 31 unbeaten away matches in the league and are the first team ever to secure a 100 percent record in away matches since the start of a season.

The previous best run of unbeaten away matches was also achieved by Maccabi, in 1951-52 — nine wins and a draw.

Maccabi’s current goal difference in the away streak of wins is 24-3. Nine of the ten matches have ended with a clean sheet.

Vladimir Ivic has included 23 players in those fixtures, four of whom have played all 900 minutes: Daniel Tenenbaum, Dan Glazer, Eitan Tibi and Andre Geraldes.

The current string of wins in away matches actually began in the last round of last season when Maccabi returned victorious from Toto-Turner stadium with a 4-0 win.

Maccabi’s all-time away record against Beersheba shows 21 wins, 17 draws and 16 defeats, with a goal difference of 72-54. Indeed, Maccabi’s 49 percent success rate against their opponents tonight is the best of all 26 clubs who have played in Beersheba.

At the new Turner ground, the record is two wins for Maccabi, two draws and three defeats.

Maccabi have met Beersheba in the 21st round in four of the last ten seasons (2012-14-17-18) and all four of those were home Maccabi games which they won.

Yossi Abuksis, Beersheba’s new coach, does not have a sparkling record against Maccabi when leading clubs against us and his tally stands at four wins, five draws and 15 defeats.
