Facts and figures ahead of Suduva

This is the eighth season in which Maccabi is participating in the Europa League and its predecessor, the UEFA Cup – more than any other Israeli club. Maccabi has competed in the group stage on four occasions: 2011-12, 2013-14, 2016-17, 2017-18.

The competition’s format consists of three preliminary rounds and a playoff. All ties at all stages are played over two legs. This season, for the first time, Maccabi has entered the competition in the third preliminary round, meaning it will have to overcome two opponents to advance to the group stage.

In previous years, Maccabi once entered directly into the group stage after dropping out of Champions League playoff round, once to the competition’s playoff round, twice to the second preliminary round, and three times to the first preliminary round.

The UEFA Europa League was inaugurated in the 2009-10 season when it succeeded the UEFA Cup. The change included a merger with the Intertoto Cup, UEFA’s third-tier competition which was discontinued.

Maccabi played its first Europa League fixture in 2010 against FK Mogren of Montenegro, winning 2-0. Yoav Ziv scored the club’s inaugural goal in the competition and the team included Sheran Yeini, Maccabi’s current captain.

Maccabi has reached the third preliminary round on each of its previous five appearances in the competition and has never failed to advance to the playoff stage. The club’s record in all those fixtures amounts to eight wins, one draw and one defeat.

In four of those five ties, Maccabi played the first leg away and completed victory in the subsequent home leg, twice at Bloomfield and twice in Netanya.

The biggest win in the third preliminary round came in the 2011-12 campaign against FK Zeljeznicar Sarajevo of Bosnia-Herzegovina, when Maccabi won 6-0 at Bloomfield. Until this season, Israeli clubs have racked up a 100 percent record against Lithuanian clubs, with four successes, all of which came in preliminary round action. In the UEFA Cup, Maccabi beat FBK Kaunas in the 1999-2000 season and Zalgiris Vilnius in 2001-02. Hapoel Beersheba beat Zalgiris Vilnius in 1997-98 in the preliminary stage of the now-defunct European Cup-Winners’ Cup, and Hapoel Tel Aviv beat FK Ekranas in the playoff round of the Europa League in 2011-12.

Yeini: We are preparing for a tough encounter

Maccabi’s captain Sheran Yeini tells the news conference before tomorrow’s Europa League third qualifying round first leg tie that the team are preparing to face quality opposition and the players are expecting a tough encounter. Watch the press conference here

” We have seen our opponents and have analysed the video footage They are a good side and last season managed a good result against APOEL Nicosia. We respect them and will take this match with the utmost seriousness, this is a super-important competition for us and all the teams competing are quality sides so we are preparing for a tough encounter.

Q: Sheran, you said you have not yet trained with the team after returning from injury, are you ready to play and will we see you on the pitch?

A: It depends on the coach, I am trying my hardest to be in the best possible shape each day but it’s up to the coach.

Q: Is there a little pressure in the club following the loss to Cluj?

A: There is no pressure, this is part of football and it’s all to do with experience. I have encountered a situation where were knocked out by Basel in the Champions League, and following that we had an excellent run in the group stage of the Europa League and we even made it out of the groups. In football anything can happen, there is no point in panicking, we have to learn from the past, be prepared and through this increase our chances of victory, that’s all.

Q: Against Red Star Belgrade, even though they lost, Suduva made life very difficult for their opponents. The look like a good side.

A: In football it’s very easy to make life difficult for the opponents. I do not expect any easy games and we will have to be at our best and show a lot of courage and spirit. I think this club has great character and we will have to show that during the game.

Q: Maccabi is not usually at its peak for these matches because they take place before the start of the season while Suduva are mid-way through theirs, how will this affect you?

A: I have learned that there are no excuses; you have to give your best in every situation in order to get the result you need and that’s what we will do.

Q: How do you feel with the return of Eitan Tibi and that you will be cooperating again?

A: Eitan is a good friend and an excellent player, there are four players competing for the same position and they are all excellent. I respect and appreciate them all and the competition for places (in defence) will be challenging but we have a long season ahead (and there will be enough work for everybody). I am very pleased that he has returned.

Q: How do you assess your fitness level?

A: I think we are in a good situation, certainly from a physical fitness perspective but sometimes even if you are at your best level and you don’t control the game, you become tired but we want to control the pace, control the ball and decide when we want to increase the pace and when we want to play at a slower pace.

Q: Do you want to kill off the game in this leg?

A: From my experience, there is no such thing, there are very few games in which such things happen. It will be amazing if it does happen, but it rarely happens.

Honours for Maccabi Foundation and Educating for Excellence initiative

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin awarded an outstanding achievement plaque to the Maccabi Tel Aviv FC Foundation and the “Educating for Excellence” trust initiative on Monday for their work in community educational projects in Ramle, Netanya and Kiryat Shalom.

The club was represented at a ceremony at the President’s Residence by CEO Ben Mansford, coach Vladimir Ivic, captain Sheran Yeini and Foundation manager Yuval Shaham, who was accompanied by one of the girls participating in the programme.

Representatives from Israel’s Premier League clubs gathered for the event to celebrate a year of community initiatives throughout the country. The Maccabi and Educating for Excellence project was highlighted for its unique and outstanding work during the 2018/19 season.

President Rivlin awarded the plaque to Yuval Shaham, and 12-year-old Lia, a participant in the initiative’s activities at Kiryat Shalom.

Maccabi’s part of the initiative saw the club hold weekly soccer training sessions for boys and girls and contributed to their academic education to improve their chances of a bright future. It has been running for three years and during each year activities have expanded to include more participants and activities.
