Andre possesses and excellent football pedigree and is part of a club renown for signing and developing some of the best talent in Europe. It was pleasing to see how excited Andre was to come and join Maccabi and I look forward to seeing him play in Yellow very soon. Geraldes already knows Nick Blackman from their time at Sporting Gijon last season so we are all confident that he will settle into life at Kiryat Shalom quickly. Welcome Andre. Finally, I would like to thank Mitch for enabling us to make this addition. Without his constant support and drive to push Maccabi forwards, it would be impossible to envisage signings such as this”.

Geraldes spent loan spells with Vitoria Setubal and a third stint with Belenenses before leaving Portugal to join Sporting Gijon of the Spanish second division where he played along with Nick Blackman.

Schoenfeld: “It’s a good start to the season”

The 2019/20 season opened up last night as Maccabi won the first title of the campaign after taking home the Champions Cup with a 1:0 win over Bnei Yehuda. Aaron Schoenfeld found the back of the goal for the Yellow & Blue’s lone goal of the contest and he spoke about the win following the match:

“I feel great. It’s always great to start the season by winning a title. It’s fantastic to score and it’s a good beginning to the new campaign which will give us confidence going forward.”

About the new season:
“Last season was quite long with many matches. We are feel like everything is new right now. We lost some players but it’s still the same Maccabi as the heart of the club remains. This is the same club and everyone is enthusiastic about the new season.”

Looking ahead to Cluj:
“We are going into the match with the goal to win and that’s the only thing that we are thinking about. We saw Cluj and they are a good team, but Maccabi is a team of winners; everyone wants to win all the time. Of course we want to win titles and that we want to be in the Champions League Group Stages but we have to take it one match at a time.”

Micha: “This will give us energy going forward”

Dor Micha, the Maccabi Tel Aviv midfielder looked back at his squad’s 1:0 victory against Bnei Yehuda to win the Champions Cup thanks to a goal by Aaron Schoenfeld. Micha also spoke about the Champions League qualifier against Cluj later this week:

“We’ll take the title but most importantly we need to get into match shape at this stage of the season. We have a few more days to prepare and it’s very important that we look good and play well.”

Closing a circle with Bnei Yehuda:
“This is actually closing a circle for the last time we lost the Champions Cup. I’m happy that today, which wasn’t a great game by us we knew how to win. This will give us energy to go forward.”

About the Champions League qualifier:
“We had two very intensive training camps and we worked very hard to prepare for the season. We know what we are heading into. This will be a totally different type of match from the Champions Cup and we have to look much better.”

Goals in Europe:
“I never go into a competition with the goal to lose and our goal is the Champions League. We really want to be there, it’s a dream and I know how much fun it is. We will give it our all and that is what we are going to work on.”

The upcoming season:
“In order for that to happen we have to be much better than last season. Our competition will be much better and it will be much harder. We will have to move up a gear.”

Personal goals ahead:
“I hope to have an even better season. I worked hard and I’m waiting to get going.”

Ivic: “It’s great to win a title to open the season”

Maccabi Tel Aviv opened up the 2019/20 season by winning the Champions Cup thanks to a first half goal by Aaron Schoenfeld. Following the victory, the Head Coach Vladimir Ivic spoke about the title plus he looked ahead to Wednesday night’s Champions League qualifier against Cluj:

“It’s great to win a title to open the season. It’s important that after a match like this we continue in with our next goal. We won the Cup today but it wasn’t simple. Bnei Yehuda made a number of personnel changes but they still maintained their aggressiveness and their mentality from the previous season.”

About the match against Cluj:
“You have to prepare properly for every match in Europe and we will do so and work hard. There are a number of players who are tired from the preseason but now we are really starting to play. We have three more days to get ready for the match.”

Adding another player to the squad:
“I believe that we will bring one or perhaps two players. We will know near the end of the transfer window. As of now we have a squad. We’ll work hard every match in order to do the best for Maccabi.”

The upcoming season:
“This year will be difficult of course. After last season, every club will want to beat us but I’m not worried. I’m happy with the work that the players have done this past month and we will prepare from match to match, that’s out philosophy.”
