The morning after the 1:0 defeat to Astana on Matchday 4 of the Europa League Group Stages, Maccabi Tel Aviv had mixed feelings. On one hand there is disappointment that the result had eliminated the club from any chance of advancing out of their group. On the other hand there’s optimism amongst the players as to the quality of play that they displayed over the last few matches.

The Yellow & Blue left back, Ofir Davidzada wasn’t able to hide his disappointment:
“I think that for 90 minutes we played a level above them and we dominated the match as the statistics show. We just couldn’t find the finishing touch we have seen in other games but not against Astana. They had one chance and they scored, but that’s football. We are happy with how we played and we will take the good things away from the match.”

Looking ahead to Hapoel Raanana:
“We respect all of our opponents and they’ve had difficulties recently. But we are focusing on our game and the upcoming match with Hapoel Raanana is very important. If we play like we have then everything will be fine.”

Central defender Eitan Tibi also summed up the match against Astana:
“It’s disappointing. We played well but we lost. The stats were all in our favor and we controlled the pace of the game and we had plenty of chances, but at the end of the day we lost the match. I hope that if we continue to play like this there’s no question that the results will come soon.”

Being able to score goals and looking ahead:
“That’s part of the game and we have to learn from that. Unfortunately there’s no escaping the fact that we won’t advance to the next stage. I hope that we can keep the momentum up in league play.”

On Sunday Maccabi will face Hapoel Raanana on Matchday 10 of the Israel Premier League with the goal of extending their winning streak after a 5:2 victory over Hapoel Acre last Sunday. The club will have their final training session prior to the match on Saturday.

Sheran Yeini, the Maccabi Tel Aviv captain summed up the disappointing 1:0 loss to Astana on Matchday 4 of the Europa League Group Stages. Following the final whistle the captain looked back at the match that was:

“We had 23 chances compared to 6 by them. They had very few chances. We gave them a chance and they scored a goal,” Yeini commented.

“Everything went our way other than the goal,” added the captain. “We were all over the pitch and pressed. They are a smart team but we were able to play with them. Unfortunately we were the ones who came out on the short end of the stick. We played well and I don’t think we were just mediocre out there. I’m proud of my teammates, we gave 100%, played with passion and worked hard. It’s a disappointing result and we have to keep our heads high”

About the attack:
“We had plenty of chances and we had to score, but I don’t have a bad word to say about our attack.”

Jordi Cruyff, the Yellow & Blue Head Coach looked back at the club’s 1:0 loss to Astana on Matchday 4 of the Europa League:

“I think that the team is showing character. We were by far the better team, 23 shots on goal 67% possession but they had one chance and scored.”

Disappointment:
“I know it’s popular to press the panic button. We are disappointed that we are out of Europe, but I know that if we can play like this we can win our games. We are over demanding our players and they gave 200%. If you play this game 10 times you’ll win 9/10, today however, we lost.”

Taking the good points:
“There were good points today getting Schoenfeld and Micha back and there will be more coming soon. They weren’t able to play more than 30 minutes. I’ll take the positives out of it and I believe that we deserved to win, but I will watch the game again. If we continue like this I believe that we will have a good season.”

Scoring goals:
“If the team gives 100% and gives it all, no one can complain as they did today. We just couldn’t score and it’s part of football. They defended well and we tried but we couldn’t score goals. The last two games we scored 8 goals, today we couldn’t.”

Transfer targets for the league:
“The league is our first priority and we don’t talk about transfer targets. You can read all of that on the Official Website. Right now we will focus on the league and we have an important game on Sunday.”

The Yellow & Blue fell 1:0 to Astana on Matchday 4 of the Europa League after Patrick Twumasi scored a second half goal to take the three points in a contest that was controlled for the most part by the hosts. Maccabi will now get ready for Israel Premier League action at Hapoel Raanana on Sunday.

Head Coach Jordi Cruyff Starting XI featured Serbian keeper Predrag Rajikovic in goal with a defense of Ofir Davidzada, Jean-Sylvain Babin, Eitan Tibi and Captain Sheran Yeini. Avi Rikan, Cristian Battocchio, Or Dasa and Nick Blackman were in the midfield while Eliran Atar and Vidar Kjartansson were on the attack.

Available on the bench were keeper Daniel Tenenbaum, Aaron Schoenfeld, Omer Atzily, Yuval Shpungin, Dor Micha, Tal Ben Haim and Dor Peretz.

First Half
Maccabi went on the offensive right from the get go as Vidar had a 2’ chance but the keeper made the save while 4 minutes later Blackman found Dasa in close, but his header went out. Babin headed Battocchio’s 18’ corner but his effort just went wide of the goal and just one minute later Vidar’s chance in the box was miraculously saved again by keeper Nenad Eric.

Blackman swept into the box but his opportunity went off of a defender in the 22’ and 8 minutes later Atar’s long range strike was saved by the keeper and sent out for a corner. In the 34’ Battocchio’s stunner from just outside of the area went wide of the target and right before the halftime whistle Blackman sent a cross to Dasa but his effort just went over the bar as the club’s went into the break goalless.

Second Half
Atar came out flying to start the second half as the Astana keeper had to be alert to make the smart save and send the ball out for a corner. In the 52’ Rikan sent a screamer that Eric was able to stop yet again while Atar’s header attempt from a Yeini cross went wide of the goal. However, Astana took a 1:0 lead via Patrick Twumasi as the striker took a Absal Beysebekov cross and put it behind Rajikovic in the 57’.

Cruyff made a double substitution in the 65’ to freshen up the attack as Aaron Schoenfeld and Dor Micha came on for Or Dasa and Eliran Atar while Schoenfeld picked up a quick yellow just one minute later for a reckless tackle. Omer Atzily was the third substitution as he entered the match for Blackman in the 77’ as Maccabi looked for a goal. Rikan jumped on a 79’ rebound but his effort flew over the goal as the match ended in a 1:0 win for Astana.
