Maccabi “Shachar” Tel Aviv visited Kiryat Shemona as they took on their northern counterpart on Matchday 15 of the Youth Ligat Ha’Al. The young Yellow & Blue came into the contest with a 2 match win streak and looked to take home another three points.
Guy Tzarfati had to make do without the injured Amit Rosenboim and Daniel Peretz who was with the National Team as Hen Ozeri and Noam Cohen both got the start.
First Half
Both sides played tentative football over the first quarter hour, but it would be the hosts who would take a 1:0 lead thanks to Rotem Hatuel in the 18th minute. Or Dasa attempted to send a number of deep balls to his teammates over the Kiryat Shemona defense that didn’t find their marks while counterattacks by Eylon Almog and Dor Galili missed the target as Maccabi “Shachar” went into the break down by a goal.

Second Half
Just four minutes into the second half, Dasa was able to get a deep ball into the box right to Almog who took a terrific shot that Kiryat Shemona keeper Daniel Banish was able to kick save right onto the feet of Dor Galili who scored the equalizer from in close.
However, in the 77th minute, Kiryat Shemona regained the lead on a counter thanks to Itzhak Lugassi. Tzarfati’s players tried to draw the Yellow & Blue even but to no avail coming up short 2:1 versus Kiryat Shemona as they will now get ready for next week’s encounter against Beitar Tubruk.

NEW: Training Principles in Modern Football Course
The Club's Sports Science Department along with the Wingate Institute for Physical Education and Sports are proud to launch a course that combines both theoretical and practical implementation. Antonio Dello Iacono: "The advantage? Experienced lecturers"Over the last few years, sports science has become essential in providing information to plan, implement and monitor training programs in the field of football. This coming March, a brand new course will be launched in conjunction with the Maccabi Tel Aviv Sports Science Department and the Wingate Institute for Physical Education and Sports that will deal with training methodologies in modern football. The course which will be a total of 60 academic hours and will meet 12 times at Kiryat Shalom. Lecturers will include Dr. Antonio Dello Iacono, Course Coordinator, the Youth Department’s Performance Director Patrick van Leeuwen, Raymond Atteveld and other coaches from the department.
Registration for the course which begins on March 10th and will be held on Fridays between 09:30-14:30 is already open. In an interview with the Official Website, Dello Iacono discussed what awaits those who take part in the course.
What was the idea behind the course?
“This is something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time and it’s thanks to Patrick and the new work methods that have been implemented in the Youth Department which sped up the process of starting the course. We decided to not only touch on the theoretical side but also on the methodology of training along with the aspects of the professional, philosophical and tactical parts of the game.

Each class will be five academic hours and the course will be split up into three parts. The first will be in the classroom and will deal with the scientific and professional background which will include many practical examples. We will then move onto the pitch for part two where the Youth Department coaches will put what was learnt in the classroom into practice while the third part will be an open discussion, analysis of what was put into practice and a wrap up of both the theory and practical parts of the course.”
What requirements are necessary to enroll in the course?
“The criteria is that registrants must be football coaches and not a football counselor or group leader. They must have a professional background. A third year student who is a candidate for a physical education degree and has passed a test in scientific basics of physical fitness may register. A person without a background or experience may not register for the course because it will be taught at a very high professional level and we want the participants to be able to understand the course matter. Another goal further down the line is to expand the course to a year, but right now there will be 60 hours over 12 classes.”
What are the advantages of this course?
“The practical experience of the lecturers. Whether it’s a coach who was once a player, or a performance director who has managed both youth departments and first teams over the course of 15 years or one who has an academic background based on a tremendous amount of scientific research.”
Over the last few years, sports science has become essential in providing ...

State Cup Success: Maccabi downs Bnei Lod 3:0
Maccabi Tel Aviv began their State Cup Quest with a trip to Bnei Lod in the Round of 32 and came away with a 3:0 victory as Vidar Kjartansson scored a brace for the Yellow & BlueThe Yellow & Blue visited Bnei Lod for an Israel State Cup Round of 32 matchup and got their campaign off to a fine start with a 3:0 win thanks to a first half brace by Vidar Kjartansson and a second half marker by Yossi Benayoun.
Sports Director Jordi Cruyff stood on the sidelines for the Israel State Cup Round of 32 contest and the Starting XI consisted of keeper Predrag Rajikovic with a defensive quartet of Eli Dasa, Eitan Tibi, Egor Filipenka, Avi Rikan. Dor Peretz, Haris Medunjanin and Yossi Benayoun manned the midfield while Sagiv Yehezkel, Vidar Kjartansson and acting captain Tal Ben Chaim provided the attack.

Available on the bench were Daniel Lifshitz, Dor Micha, Tal Ben Haim, Eliel Peretz, Barak Itzhaki, Eden Ben Basat and Nosa Igiebor.
First Half
Peretz tried to get Maccabi going early with a 4th minute shot that missed target while Amran Elkrinawi’s attempt one minute later was caught by Rajikovic. In the 9th minute Wail Marisat almost put Bnei Lod on the board first but Rikan brilliantly cleared the ball by heading it over the goal.
In the 17th minute Ben Chaim sent a dangerous cross in the box that was cleared by Emil Duko while Tibi’s bicycle kick attempt off the ensuing corner just went wide left of the goal. Two minutes later Peretz had a chance on goal but his header went over the bar to keep the match goalless.

However, it wasn’t goalless for long. In the 23rd minute Kjartansson took a gorgeous long pass from none other than the keeper Rajikovic and scored to make it 1:0 for the Yellow & Blue. The Serbian had dribbled the ball out of the box and found the Icelander streaking down the left side who buried his chance behind the Bnei Lod keeper.
If you thought that Kjartansson was done you were mistaken as he took a pinpoint perfect corner kick from Medunjanin and headed it home for a 26th minute 2:0 Maccabi advantage. Just prior to the break Ben Chaim’s 45th minute left side free kick whacked off of the bar as the whistle sounded.

Second Half
After almost a quarter hour of quiet, Dasa fed Benayoun a nice ball in the box that the veteran easily slotted home to give the Yellow & Blue a 3:0 lead in the 58th minute. Three minutes later Dasa himself almost added his name to the scorers list after taking a gorgeous pass from Yehezkel but the right back’s effort just skipped by the far left hand post.
In the 64th minute Maccabi made a double substitution as Dor Micha & Eliel Peretz entered the fray in favor of Haris Medunjanin & Tal Ben Chaim while in the 75th minute Eden Ben Basat was introduced for Kjartansson. Three minutes later Micha smacked the ball off of the bar while Yehezkel’s follow up hit the left post.

In the 89th minute, Yehezkel had another good chance to score but came up empty while Micha also also had an opportunity that was saved by the keeper. As the clock hit the 93rd minute, the referee blew the whistle to end the contest giving Maccabi an Israel State Cup Round of 32 3:0 win.

Atteveld: “Our coaches want to learn”
Four coaches from the Maccabi Tel Aviv Youth Department along with Assistant Performance Director Raymond Atteveld visited Everton’s Academy and returned to Israel full of inspirationLast week four coaches from Maccabi Tel Aviv’s Youth Department spent a week at Everton in the city of Liverpool as they continued their ongoing professional education at the English Premier League Club.
Upon their return, the group summed up the experiences as the Assistant Performance Director Raymond Atteveld discussed what it was like to return to the Club where he had once played:
“It was a wonderful experience to be at a Premier League Club with training facilities of the highest level. For me personally, it was nice to be back at a place that I know really well from the time I was there as a player. We wanted our coaches to meet with other coaches who have different philosophies when dealing with the players on their teams. It’s important for every coach to see as many perspectives as possible, this is invaluable”

Atteveld continued: “Of course we want them to follow our philosophy, but it’s very important for them to gain other ideas along the way as this will just keep giving them more experiences to draw from and they will continue to improve because of that. We want them to be able to give over what they have learned to their players also. We saw some interesting examples that allowed the players to be coaches during the training sessions and in some cases they were able to try out various positions so they could also understand the holistic approach of the game.”
Other things the Maccabi coaches did during their time in England:
“We spoke to Everton’s first team assistant coach, senior staff at the Academy and we saw how they do video analysis and use the GPS System. We spent a lot of time with the Everton staff and they were extremely open and friendly to us. We received responses to anything and everything we asked and it was truly a fantastic experience. We also were able to see three matches that were all victories for them, so they really wanted us to stay.” Atteveld said with a smile.
What he learned about the Maccabi coaches:
“I was very happy to see that the coaches not only listened attentively but they asked questions about issues that were of interest and they weren’t afraid to ask again if they needed to. Every coach that came with us works with a different age group and they knew how to take the advice from their Everton counterparts. They prepared well before coming on the trip, they were active and they wanted to learn which made me very happy.”
Eliezer Ben Aharon, coach of Maccabi “Oded” Tel Aviv spoke about the Everton experience and tried to put his finger on the main differences between the academies: “This wasn’t the first time that I’ve travelled outside of Israel for continuing professional education. Overall the concept is similar between the two clubs, however the differences lie in the agenda of each of them. I was happy to see that this time compared to other trips I have been on, that we are on a similar path to that of a big European Club like Everton. This is in regards to the style of play built on training exercises, learning and improving, time management, set training program etc..
The main differences between the academies:
“I felt that we are on the correct path and it’s very encouraging going forward. I also learned that the gap between the quality of our players match play isn’t so great. The only gap that I can point to is in the mental part of the game. The players here come 100% focussed to every training session. The coaches don’t have to spend a lot of time on the mental side of the game whereas we have to do much more. I would be very happy if our players would come “full blast” to every practice.”
Alon Brumer, who played at the highest of levels with Maccabi also gave his thoughts on the trip:
“It was an amazing experience. This was my first continuing professional education program with the academy so I didn’t know what to expect. I was very pleasantly surprised. What really struck me was that everyone at Everton had the same goal; to make sure the players advance to the first team.”
On the differences between the departments:
“Their sports culture is different, where they deal with just the game itself. The children who are part of their youth department receive the utmost attention and the program is at a very high level from the most complex to the simplest of things. As coaches who work in the youth department, we try to stimulate the children. At Everton they begin working on the simpler and easier things and work their way up to that which is more difficult. It’s very much related to the sports culture because it is imbued in them at a very early age.”

Maccabi “Ilan” Tel Aviv coach, Amir Sofer also spoke about the Everton experience:
“It was truly fascinating. It’s always interesting to see a Club which is at a higher level especially in terms of conduct and practice. I was very impressed by Everton’s facilities and how they work on the tiniest details of the game during practice. I came back from then trip with a number of new ideas and there’s no question that we can all learn plenty from them.”
Last week four coaches from Maccabi Tel Aviv’s Youth Department spent a ...
