U19 TOURNAMENT PARTICIPANT: S.B.V. EXCELSIOR OF ROTTERDAM

Maccabi Tel Aviv’s youth academy will host a three-day international youth tournament next week for the third year in a row after two very successful previous events.

England’s Crystal Palace, S.B.V. Excelsior of Rotterdam, The Netherlands and Grasshoppers Zurich from Switzerland will participate alongside the hosts, Beitar Jerusalem and Hapoel Beersheba. The event will take place at Maccabi Tel Aviv’s PenguinPickUp training facility at Kiryat Shalom between January 23-25.

Here is a brief look at S.B.V. Excelsior of Rotterdam, who like Crystal Palace, are returning for the second year in a row. The club have ended the first half of their current youth campaign in seventh place in the Eerste Divisie U19. Last season they had success in the Dutch Cup, getting past fellow-Rotterdam outfit Feyenoord, and Twente before falling to Ajax Amsterdam in the semi-finals.

These are some of the most notable players to have turned out for Excelsior:

Robin van Persie: The striker played for Excelsior’s youth side before moving to Feyenoord. He is the top scorer for the Netherlands national team. Born in Rotterdam, Van Persie joined Excelsior when he was five but left for Feyenoord’s youth academy when he was 16. He made his full team debut at the Rotterdam outfit because of an injury crisis at the club and was quickly promoted into the first team. He made his debut for the club at 17, the first of 15 total starts during the 2001–02 season. After starting for Feyenoord in UEFA Cup final, he received the KNVB Best Young Talent award. After five years at Feyenoord, in 2004 Van Persie moved to Arsenal where he was a prolific striker, scoring  132 goals in 278 Premier League appearances. He moved to Manchester United in 2012 where he made 105 appearances and scored 58 goals. After leaving England in 2015, he moved to Turkey and joined Fenerbahce before making the final stop of his career back at Feyenoord in 2018 where he retired in last May.

Mounir El Hamdaoui: The Rotterdam-born striker joined the Excelsior youth academy in 2001 and played together with his youth friends Robin van Persie and Saïd Boutahar. In the 2001–02 season, he made debut for the Rotterdam side under manager Adrie Koster, scoring two goals in six appearances. El Hamdaoui played a total of 74 league matches for Excelsior, scoring 32 goals. He has gone on to play at Derby County, Willem II, AZ Alkmaar, Ajax Amsterdam, Fiorentina and Malaga.

As an under-21 he played for the Netherlands but switched allegiances and played for Morocco 16 times, scoring three goals. He is currently seeing out his playing career in Qatar.

Luigi Bruins: Attacking midfielder Bruins started playing at age six. He was initially turned down by Feyenoord and joined Excelsior instead. Bruins went through the complete Excelsior youth academy, until he made his professional debut in 2005. He played for Feyenoord, Red Bull Salzburg and Nice before returning to his boyhood club. He played 294 matches and scored 33 goals during his adult career and is currently still active as a player as well as taking on coaching duties of Excelsior’s  under-13s.

Maccabi, Tibi share three records in one game

Maccabi Tel Aviv beat Hapoel Hadera 3-0 in the TASE Premier League 18th round on Saturday to maintain a four-point gap at the top of the standings and the victory set a new Israeli record of 31 consecutive away games without defeat, overcoming Maccabi Haifa’s mark of 30 that was set in March 1995.

Maccabi’s last away defeat was against Beitar Jerusalem at Teddy Stadium in April 2018 and since then away fixtures have accounted for 25 wins and six draws, with a positive goal difference of 65-15.

Maccabi have played 15 different opponents during the record-setting run, with Bnei Yehuda the most-faced opponent, at four. Maccabi have won all of those fixtures.

The record has been achieved at ten different venues but the happiest hunting ground has been the Moshava Stadium in Petah Tikva from which Maccabi have returned with six wins and two draws.

The biggest away wins have been 4-0 results over Beitar Jerusalem and Hapoel Beersheba.

The only time that Maccabi have turned around a deficit was against Hapoel Kiryat Shmona in November 2018 when the hosts took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute before Omer Atzili scored twice, in the 38th and 65th for a 2-1 win.

Atzili also leads the 16 Maccabi players who have scored during the away record, he has struck 13 goals.

Another record that was set on Saturday was 10 wins in all 10 away fixtures since the beginning of a season.

The third record was for central defender Eitan Tibi, who doubled his own club goal-scoring tally to date after heading in twice against Hadera, making him the first Maccabi defender ever to score two goals in the same match with his head.

It was the seventh time ever that Maccabi have scored all three goals in a match with headers.

Ivic: I’m happy for Tibi, he has worked hard

Maccabi Tel Aviv returned to winning ways on Saturday in their 3-0 TASE Premier League away victory over Hapoel Hadera. It follows last week’s goalless draw with Beitar Jerusalem and it was a tough encounter against stubborn opponents.

Chico Ofoedu put Maccabi ahead in the 20th minute but the lead looked precarious until Eitan Tibi stepped up to net twice at the very end of the match.

Despite the win, coach Vladimir Ivic was not pleased with the performance during extended periods during the match but nevertheless said that the win was deserved.

“This was not an easy match, Hadera are a good side and they are fifth in the standings. They are very good in defence and in attack. We prepared for the sort of game that they threw at us but something did not work for us in the second half, although we deserved to win. We will have to be better prepared for the next match. We want to win, no matter who the opponents are,” Ivic said.

He said everybody needed to remember the club they were playing for but was happy for Tibi.

“I am really pleased that he scored two goals, he has been working hard and has proved that he can also contribute in attack.

“We have played three or four matches with the same players and this fixture comes after our last match which was last Monday, so this time we started with two different players from our previous stable lineup. I have a broad squad and the best players are the ones who get to start.

He said that Maccabi Haifa, the closest challengers in the title race did not concern him and he was concentrating only on his own squad.

Tibi: My hard work has paid off

Eitan Tibi scored two identical headed goals on Saturday against Hapoel Hadera to ensure the 3-0 win over Maccabi Tel Aviv’s stubborn opponents. It was the first time the central defender had netted since November 2014, when he scored against Maccabi Netanya.

“I’m a central defender but I’m so happy that I scored and helped secure the victory, I’m ecstatic,” Tibi said after the match.

“My path has not been easy lately but this campaign is compensation for last season when I had a very difficult time, but things happen for a reason. I believe that hard work is the best way for me to show my abilities on the pitch and I am pleased that it has happened and hope that it can continue,” said Tibi, who sat out most of last season because of injury.

He said that maintaining the four-point gap over Maccabi Haifa would not be easy but that it was not a prime consideration for the players.

“We have not thought about our situation in the standings, we had an aim to win today and I’m pleased that we managed to do so. Certainly, this title race will be much closer than last season. There is a good battle and I hope we can continue to win to keep our place at the top of the table,” Tibi said and signed off by dedicating the goals to his parents.

Maccabi pushed hard for 3-0 win over Hadera

Maccabi Tel Aviv had to work hard in driving rain before restoring their four-point lead over Maccabi Haifa at the top of the TASE Premier League on Saturday following their 3-0 away win over Hapoel Hadera in Netanya, all goals being scored with headers.

Hadera were no pushovers in this match, and although Maccabi held the vast majority of possession in the first half, their 1-0 lead in the 20th minute, achieved through a Chico Ofoedu header, looked very brittle for much of the remainder of the match.

During the second half Hadera worked hard, played as equals and threatened to score. They put the ball in the Maccabi net, although the goal was disallowed for offside after a VAR check.

Maccabi secured only in the final minutes of the game when Eitan Tibi scored twice with two identical headed goals from corners taken by Omer Atzili in the 87th minute and in the first of the four minutes of added time.

Ofoedu scored in the 20th minute with a header from a cross on the left by Eyal Golasa to the near post that also needed a VAR check for possible offside. The striker had missed a much easier chance to slot in only seconds earlier.

In the second half, Atzili took a free kick that was well saved by Hadera goalkeeper Austin Agida in the 50th minute, and immediately at the other end, Hadera had a goal disallowed for offside when Roy Zikri beat the entire Maccabi defence and rounded goalkeeper Daniel Tenenbaum who came out of his area, but the ball ended up in the back of Maccabi’s net to no avail for Hadera. A VAR check did not find clear-cut evidence to overrule the assistant referee’s offside decision.

Atzili then had another good chance to score in the 58th minute when he ran into the area on the right but he shot into the side netting from about eight metres out.

Tibi finally put the result beyond doubt in the 87th minute when he headed in from an Atzili corner on the right that left the competent Agida with no chance. As the game entered injury time and Maccabi building up pressure, another corner yielded an identical goal from the same two protagonists in exactly the same positions, and the result was a hard-earned win. Tibi celebrated two goals in the same match for the first time in his career.

Late goals give Maccabi youth victory over Hapoel Ramat Gan

Maccabi Tel Aviv’s under-19 side were in complete command of their youth league clash with Hapoel Ramat Gan at their Ness Ziona home base on Saturday but only found the net with two very late goals to set them back to winning ways.

Maccabi had more than a handful of chances in the first half, as the dangerous Parfait Guiagon looked particularly potent but none of his four attempts managed to find the target. At the other end, Ramat Gan had a solitary attempt.

The second half was a similar affair, as Maccabi piled on the pressure to set up a similar number of chances, but the breakthrough came only in the 89th minute when Shaked Navon, who came on as substitute six minutes earlier, tapped in for 1-0 after an excellent pass from Or Roizman.

Guiagon provided Navon with his second goal seconds after the game entered injury time and he made no mistake once more.

Maccabi have now won nine of their 17 league outings this season and have amassed 34 points to put them in second place in the standings but they have played one more game than leaders Maccabi Haifa, who are on 39 points and Hapoel Tel Aviv in third, who are on 31 points.

Lineup: Tomer Alon, Guy Itzhaki, Mikel Mor, Itay Ben Hemo, Rotem Yatzkar, Afek Sapir Navot (Niv Berkovitz, 75), Shai Balahssen (Or Roizman, 45), Asaf Hershko (Nadav Nidam 61), Tal Torgeman (Omri Ram, 45), Parfait Guiagon, Ronen Hanchis (Shaked Navon, 83)

Half-term report: Maccabi’s achievements at the season mid-way point

Half the 2019-20 TASE Premier League season is now behind us and Maccabi Tel Aviv have maintained their position at the top of the standings for yet another week, and on Saturday our boys will begin the run-in towards the finish line against Hapoel Hadera as they look for another championship.

This is the state of play at the halfway point:

Maccabi have topped the standings at the halfway stage for the fourth time in the past eight seasons and statistically this is a good omen, as seven out of the last eight league leaders at this juncture have gone on to claim the title.

The 44 points accrued after 18 rounds equals Maccabi’s tally last year.

The team has an 81 percent success record, with 13 wins, five draws and no defeats. Four of the five draws have been goalless.

Maccabi have scored an average of 1.78 goals per game and have conceded only 0.22 goals for each of their 18 outings. The latter stat is better than the record for conceding for an entire season, 0.31 goals, held by Hapoel Yahud in 1977-78.

Another excellent achievement is the 100 percent record in away games at the halfway stage and this has been done only twice before, by Maccabi Tel Aviv in 1951-52 and by Hapoel Petah Tikva in 1954-55.

The current attack create an average of 14 threatening situations per game, 7.9 of which are realistic scoring chances.

Eleven players have scored for Maccabi this season and Yonatan Cohen leads his teammates with eight goals.

Maccabi have utilised 24 players in the league but only Daniel Tenenbaum, Eitan Tibi and Dan Glazer have played all 1,620 minutes, alongside ten other players at the other 13 outfits.

Of Maccabi’s 32 league goals, 24 have come from footwork in open play, 13 were scored with the right foot and 11 were left-footed. Three penalties have been scored  and two goals from headers, both by Chico Ofoedu. One goal has come from a free kick taken by Yonatan Cohen, and there have been two own-goals. The second half in matches has been slightly more productive, with 17 goals compared to 15 in the first period.
