First Half
Maccabi went on the offensive right from the get to and in the 2’ a Thomas free kick almost found the back of the goal but keeper Yair Hemo made the timely save and sent the ball out for a corner. Ten minutes later, Kartzev tried his luck from long distance but Hemo was in place while in the 15’ a mixup on the Yellow & Blue defensive end gave Yakir Natan a chance in close, but the opposing midfielder couldn’t get a good attempt off.

In the 22’ Dasa took control of the ball in the midfield and went by two defenders, but his opportunity was taken care of by Hemo. Four minutes later Petah Tikva midfielder Tal Zuares came in off the right wing and crossed the ball into the middle but Natan’s header missed the target. As the match hit the 38’ Agada went streaking down the left side, beat a defender and passed the ball to Almog, but his chance was saved by Hemo. Just before the halftime whistle Dasa took the ball in the midfield, but his shot from the top of the box was stopped by the keeper as Maccabi controlled the pace in the first half, however, went into the break goalless.

Second Half
Maccabi tried to break the ice early on in the second half, but in the 54’ it was almost Petah Tikva who would score first as the host’s found the back of the goal, however, it was ruled to be offside. Finally, three minutes later, the young Yellow & Blue would take a 1:0 lead when Almog came down the left and sent a magnificent cross to Agada who headed the ball home. With the U19’s pressing, they would find their second of the contest when Kartzev took a marvelous through ball and beat Hemo on a one-on-one situation for a 2:0 advantage.

In the 75’ Petah Tikva striker Ofer Osher’s chance from the top of the box made its way by the Maccabi defense but missed the post by centimeters. Six minutes later, substitutes Tomer Altman and Eyal Hen played give and go, but Hemo made the stop and in the 87’ Altman’s attempt in the box was saved by the host keeper yet again as Maccabi “Shachar” took home the 2:0 win and the three points.

Garcia: “I’m proud to be back home at Maccabi”

After Maccabi’s professional staff got an added boost yesterday, Carlos Garcia was already dressed in his training gear at Kiryat Shalom this morning. The Spaniard, who was appointed as an assistant coach after he decided to retire as an active player, helped lead the training session as the Yellow & Blue prepare for their league match on Monday against Bnei Sakhnin at the Acre Stadium.

CARLOS APPOINTED AS ASSISTANT COACH

Maccabi Tel Aviv FC are pleased to announce the appointment of Carlos Garcia as assistant coach.

The 33 year old Spaniard who spent 4 years at Maccabi winning 3 League Championships, 1 State Cup and 1 Toto Cup as well successful campaigns in Europe  scoring 7 goals in 173 appearances for Maccabis before moving  to Turkish in 2016, decided to hang up his boots and accept Maccabi’s offer to join the coaching staff.

Carlos told the club’s official website: “I am coming back home and starting a new stage in my life with the same motivation and ambition that I had when joined Maccabi as a player five years ago. I hope to match the level the biggest club in Israel deserves. Once again I feel proud to be part of Maccabi Tel Aviv”.

Maccabi’s coach Jordi Cruyff said: “Carlos is someone who doesn’t need an introduction to Maccabi Tel Aviv and Israeli football nor does he need time to adapt. His leadership, organisational skills and winning mentality we enjoyed on the pitch as he marshalled our defence and helped us win titles are assets we will all surely benefit from. I am certain that everyone connected to Maccabi will welcome him back in open arms”.

Maccabi’s CEO Ben Mansford added: “We are pleased to welcome Carlos back to the Maccabi family. Jordi feels Carlos is the right addition and we have moved swiftly to have Carlos back on the grass at Kiryat Shalom and alongside the rest of the coaching staff. Carlos knows what it takes to win titles at Maccabi and that knowledge will be important as we move forward with the rest of the season”.

Honoring the Legacy of Avi Cohen z”l

Avi Cohen z”l will always be thought of as one of the greatest players in the history of Maccabi Tel Aviv. When the term Maccabist is used, the thought of Avi is the first thing that comes to mind. With phrases like, “To be part of Maccabi Tel Aviv is to be the greatest, the most beautiful and the most successful” Avi entered the Yellow & Blue pantheon outside of the stadium as well. But of course it was number 5’s qualities on the pitch that separated him from the rest. To remember the legendary captain on the anniversary of his passing, Guy Zukerman, the Youth Department Manager spoke to the youngsters about Avi Cohen z”l right by the area dedicated to him at the Youth Academy compound.

On December 29, 2010 Maccabi Tel Aviv lost one of their greatest players in a tragic accident that shook the entire Israel football world.

Cohen was one of the all-time greats and will be remembered as one of the players who will be emulated by many until the end of time. He played the “Libero” position, a central defender who moved up in the attack, which was thought to be a much more modern way to play during his era. He was able to score one of the most memorable goals in the 1978/79 Derby due to this style of play.

Cohen made 64 appearances for the Israel National Team between 1976-1988 and scored one goal for the Blue & White. Following his playing career, Cohen coached a number of Premier League and Leumit League clubs while also serving as the President of the Players Association. On March 6, 2012, Maccabi Tel Aviv named the training facility at Kiryat Shalom after Avi Cohen z”l which will be an everlasting memorial for one of the greatest to ever wear the Yellow & Blue.

Maccabi Tel Aviv continued their preparations for their Matchday 16 date against Bnei Sakhnin next Monday January 1st (21:00 Acre). Maccabi’s former striker will be keeping fit at Kiryat Shalom over the coming days.

STEVE McCLAREN LEAVES MACCABI TEL AVIV

McClaren who joined the club earlier this summer and spent the past five months as part of Jordi Cruyff’s coaching staff told the club’s official website: “It’s with much regret I have to return to England and leave my role at Maccabi Tel Aviv. I would like to thank so many people for making my time at Maccabi such a wonderful experience. The loyal, hard-working staff who work tirelessly behind the scenes. A great set of talented players who I loved working with and passionate fans who showed their support both at home in Netanya and across the country. It’s been a pleasure to see Jordi and the team mature over the last few months, culminating with a Toto Cup final victory over Be’ersheva and the first trophy in 3 years. I wish Jordi, the staff, players and fans every success for the rest of the season and will surely come back to visit when Maccabi Tel Aviv win the Championship”.

Maccabi CEO, Ben Mansford, said: “We were delighted when Steve joined us in the summer to work with our coaching staff. Jordi and Steve alongside the rest of the staff have worked very well as a team. We are naturally disappointed Steve decided to pursue other options but this was something we knew could happen right from the start”.

Maccabi’s coach Jordi Cruyff added: “We are extremely grateful to Steve for the professional help he has given us over the past five months. He advised me a lot personally and we benefited from his input and the wealth of his experience. We knew right from the start that this was a temporary role, but in that short time managed to learn from a professional of the highest calibre. It wasn’t about me alone as everyone at Kiryat Shalom benefited from Steve’s presence, advice and positive work energy. I am certain that in Steve McClaren, Maccabi Tel Aviv has earned both a fan and an ambassador”.
