The Yellow & Blue were eliminated on away goals from Toto Cup play losing to Kiryat Shemona 1:0 in the second leg of the quarterfinals after winning the first match last Month in Netanya 3:2. Ahmed Abed scored the lone marker of the match in the first half to help the northern club advance to the semifinals.

Prematch
Head Coach Shota Arveladze made a number of changes to the Starting XI that featured earlier this week in league play, however, Serbian keeper Predrag Rajikovic was in goal as usual with Avi Rikan, Tal Ben Haim, Egor Filipenka and Dor Peretz. Captain Gal Alberman, Eyal Golasa and Nosa Igiebor were in the midfield while Yossi Benayoun, Sagiv Yehezkel and Vidar Kjartansson provided the offense.

Available on the bench for the Georgian boss were keeper Barak Levy, Yuval Shpungin, Eitan Tibi, Omri Ben Harush, Dor Micha, Eliel Peretz and Barak Itzhaki.

First Half
Chances didn’t come easily for Maccabi early on as Rikan’s 10th minute laser from 16 meters hit a defender and went out while a quarter per hour later Peretz stole the ball sent it to Benayoun who in turn passed it to Kjartansson but the Icelander’s attempt was off the mark.
ad0y1878
Rikan again had a long range opportunity but his 26th minute screamer didn’t find the target while in the 37th minute Kjartansson found Benayoun but the veteran missed the goal as the score remained 0:0. However, it didn’t take Kiryat Shemona long to take advantage of the Yellow & Blue’s miscues as Ahmed Abed took an Oren Bitton pass in the 39th minute and found the back of the Maccabi goal to give the hosts a 1:0 lead.

Filipenka tried to get his side even three minutes later but just missed to left of keeper Itamar Nitzan as the team’s headed into the break with Kiryat Shemona ahead with two away goals on 3:3 aggregate.

Second Half
Maccabi made their first substitution of the evening replacing Peretz with Yuval Shpungin as the second half got underway while Barak Itzhaki, Dor Micha and Eitan Tibi all joined the game by the 60th minute as Alberman, Filipenka and Rikan all came out of the contest.
ad0y2033
Itzhaki’s 66th minute free kick from 30 meters was saved at the last second by Nitzan as Maccabi looked for the equalizer while at the other end of the pitch Rajikovic came up big taking care of Mauricio’s one-on-one opportunity and Shpungin cleared the followup off the line to keep the score as is.
ad0y1981
The 75th minute saw Shlomi Azulay almost find the goal but his header just went by the post and two minutes later Eliel Peretz joined the fray replacing Golasa. Benayoun’s 82nd minute header was taken care of by Nitzan after number 51 received a fine pass by Itzhaki as Maccabi came closer to scoring the tying goal and one that would put them into the Toto Cup semifinals. But it was not to be as the Yellow & Blue fell to the hosts 1:0 and were knocked out of the Toto Cup on away goals with a 3:3 aggregate score.

Saturday night at 18:15 Maccabi will host Hapoel Ashkelon at the Netanya Stadium as the Yellow & Blue will look to get back onto the winning track.

Patrick van Leeuwen: “We want to give all the players the best opportunities”

Performance Director Patrick van Leeuwen spoke about his first few months at Maccabi and what he has been working on in the Youth Department. He especially focussed on the importance of the Maccabi Tel Aviv School in the North of Tel Aviv and why it is as crucial as the one located at Kiryat Shalom:

“The Club’s plan is to keep working with both the school in the North of Tel Aviv and in the South at Kiryat Shalom because they are all part of the same family. I don’t see this changing over the next season because as a Club we need a bigger pond to fish from and to find quality talented players. The rumors of the North school closing are unfounded as this is a critical location for all of us at Maccabi. The information and statistics say that there are an equal amount of quality players coming from the North as from the South.”

Improving the Northern School’s facilities:

“It is crucial for us at Maccabi to improve the facilities and to give the best opportunities to the children at the North school. We need both schools in order for us to be able to develop the best players and evaluate the best talent that is available across Tel Aviv as well as the country. This will help us make the correct decisions in bringing the best players to the Under-16 or Under-17 Clubs.”

The all-important connection between the Maccabi School in the North and the one at Kiryat Shalom:

“As I mentioned, we have a difference between the two schools in terms of facilities but in terms of philosophy there is no difference between the schools because both sets of coaches get the same education and as a club the children in the North are as important for us as the children in the South. This is one of the tasks that together with Club management we are trying to improve. We want to have as many hours and the same level of facilities that we have in the South.”

Of course, developing the younger levels at Maccabi Tel Aviv is also a very important task which van Leeuwen believes is critical as to the success of the program:

“For me it’s a full package. We want to create an Under-8 and Under-9 club on a permanent basis as this is as important as creating a higher level for the Under-19 team. The philosophy that is put in means that it begins with the younger ages moving all the way up to the older ages. We try to prepare the youngsters to be technically able to handle the ball and to be able to play together. At these ages you start giving them the general feel of being a footballer and eventually it will end up where they will need to show us who is the best player or who can take a step to the first team.”

The Youth Department’s activities over the past few months have been numerous, but van Leeuwen points out a number of crucial points:

“There have been numerous activities going on in the Youth Department over the past few months, but there are some very important changes that have been made:

The first thing is that we have been focusing on developing the coaches to make sure that they get enough information about the philosophy that I want to have in the Maccabi Academy. This is related to how we want to play matches and how we want the coaches and players to prepare to play matches as well as to become better footballers individually.

Secondly, I wanted to improve the criteria around player development to do the physical training in a different fashion. This way it doesn’t take time away from the football practice because it’s done before the training session and that way the session is a pure football session.

I have added video analysis in a more demanding way from a management point of view in order to have every match and every single training session filmed. This way we can show the players visually what mistakes they made or what they did very well.

In addition, we are working together with the Wingate College for Physical Education And Sports Science on a first of a kind professional course for coaches at Kiryat Shalom where we can share our professional information amongst each other.

This phase has been going on for more than 4 months and we have made progress. I’m satisfied as to the efforts of the coaches and the efforts of the players. Even though we may be playing football, I am making different demands in the way the coaches and the players have to perform which they are trying to cope with.”

The department has been undergoing a revolution and the changes that are taking place have been planned by the Club’s management:

“In the beginning, there were some heads turning and eyes rolling around as to why there were different demands from what they had been used to. But this was the way I wanted to do things and what was also demanded of me by Sport Director Jordi Cruyff as well as the owner to make the appropriate changes to help bring the players and the coaches to the next level. I’m satisfied with the direction we are now going in.”

A very important key to the future relies on the addition of Raymond Atteveld to the staff:

“I can do a lot more now because Raymond Atteveld is working with me. He is spending time with the coaches on the field as well as with the players and he is trying to stimulate the coaches to bring everyone to a higher level. It’s great to have him here. With both of us now working together we can help improve the coaches and bring them to another level.

Raymond was a well known player from Holland and he has a lot of character. I brought him in when he first started coaching and I brought him to FC Kairat where we worked closely together to bring the players and the coaches together. This is exactly what I want to do at Maccabi. When he became free, I invited him to join us at Maccabi and to assist me with this project. It’s very important for him to handle the coaches and various other things as it frees up my time to focus on other issues at hand. We still have certain things to improve both with the players and the coaches as well as in organizational development.”

What are the the next steps:

“We are trying to further increase our knowledge of our players in Israel so the scouting department have some different demands than what they had before. We want to see the players but also those who we want to strengthen from the younger ages, 8-9 years old and up to 17 years old. The Maccabi Academy also had the intention to organize open days for children of local clubs to show their qualities to the coaches and scouts of Maccabi Tel Aviv.

An additional step is to bring the Medical Department of the Academy to another level where there is clear attention for the players on a daily basis. Since the hours on the field has increased that also means we have to make sure that we are doing everything to prevent them from being injured but also if they unfortunately do get hurt then we can treat them the best way ourselves.

Part of the Club also includes the commercial activities of the Football Schools. We want to make some adjustments which will make them even more fun for children to be a part of and experience the Maccabi Football Academy style. Whoever is part of the Football Schools and is performing well, potentially will have the opportunity to be invited to the Academy training sessions.”

“We have to collect ourselves and get out of this situation together”

It was hard to hide the disappointment following last night’s 1:0 loss to Bnei Yehuda on Matchday 11 of the Ligat Ha’Al at Haberfeld Stadium. Midfielder Dor Micha spoke about his feelings after his side couldn’t find a way past the host’s defense:

“It was very frustrating over the course of the match. We have been in this situation many times and in the past we have been able to score just like last week (against Kiryat Shemona) but this isn’t the way we want to play. We didn’t look good and we didn’t create many chances during the game. We were very lackadaisical and slow. It can’t continue this way.”

His personal feelings following the contest:

“We take every loss hard, especially now during these critical times when we move further away from the top of the table. So it’s hard on everyone and not just me.”

The Club’s poor play of late:

“I don’t have an answer. We come each and every week to give it our all and something just isn’t working in our game. When things aren’t going well, nothing is going well. The negative momentum continues to build when we have opportunities and we can’t score.”

The atmosphere in the dressing room:

“The atmosphere is not good right now and that’s understandable. This is perhaps the worst period of time we’ve had over the past four years. I don’t recall a situation like this or a month like this over the last four seasons. We have to find a way out of this together. We have to lift ourselves up because the season is still very young. We’ll have to collect ourselves and begin to play the football that we played two months ago.”

The midfielder added:

“We definitely believe in our coach and his ability to get us out of this funk. From the coaches to the players and everyone else here, we all believe in each other. We’ve already proved that we can play quality football which we did over the first few months with this squad and this coach. There is no reason to think that we can’t get back to how we played previously. In football there is momentum. Just as we had four wonderful seasons where everything went the right way, now we are in a down swing where nothing is going our way and it happens.”

Arveladze: “I’m very disappointed”

Shota Arveladze didn’t hide his disappointment following the Yellow & Blue’s disappointing 1:0 defeat to Bnei Yehuda at Haberfeld Stadium. Maccabi didn’t look good and gave up a lone goal off of a header by Almog Bozaglo. Arveladze spoke about his feelings at the end of the contest:

“Its difficult to express my thoughts right now because I’m very disappointed. This is the most difficult time for us. We had a bad game and there can be no excuses. The simplest explanation is that this is football. This isn’t the first time that a weaker club has defeated a stronger one. There are plenty of excuses and we can discuss them all, the travel, the injuries etc… the Sport Director is here to make decisions and he knows what needs to be changed. There has to be a change in our ability so we can get back to where we were a month and a half ago.”

On the future:

“I always look ahead and not backwards because I can’t change what has already happened. I’ll do my best together with the players to change the situation.”

On the rumors concerning Krasnodar:

“I won’t comment on rumors from Russia.”

Ben Haim: “This isn’t the Maccabi we want to see”

A disappointing result for the Yellow & Blue after 90 minutes of football at Haberfeld Stadium as Maccabi Tel Aviv fell 1:0 to Bnei Yehuda on Matchday Eleven of the Ligat Ha’Al. Veteran defender Tal Ben Haim spoke to the media following the loss: “When you lose it’s even harder on the players. At the end of the day we had a very so-so match. Eight points is a lot. There are periods of time that are like this. This is the situation.”

About the match:

“We didn’t start out the way we wanted to. Bnei Yehuda made it difficult for us and they stayed back to defend. This isn’t the Maccabi that we want to see but we’ll learn from this and improve because we don’t have a choice. We didn’t create enough chances and the match didn’t go the way we wanted it to.”

On the future:

“There are still plenty of matches left and right now we need to improve and we have to look at ourselves. When we improve only then we can then look ahead of us. I always believe and it’s still early but we have to start improving.”

Maccabi fall to Bnei Yehuda 1:0

Bnei Yehuda defeated Maccabi Tel Aviv 1:0 on a 79th minute header by Almog Bozaglo on Matchday Eleven of the Ligat Ha’Al at Haberfeld Stadium in Rishon Le’Zion to capture the three points. The Yellow & Blue will now get ready for the second leg of the Toto Cup Quarterfinals at Kiryat Shemona on Wednesday night as they hold a 3:2 advantage on aggregate from the first leg that was played last Month at the Netanya Stadium.

First Half
The match got underway with Tibi picking up a 6th minute yellow card while three minutes later Alon Turgeman tested Rajikovic from 17 meters out but the shot stopper made the quick save parrying the ball out for a corner.
ad0y1026
In the 14th minute, Kjartansson had a chance in the box but his effort skipped wide right of the goal and in the 21st minute Yehezkel tried his luck from outside of the area but was easily collected by the Bnei Yehuda keeper Emilios Zobas. Three minutes later Dasa’s low screamer went wide right of the goal as the score remained 0:0.

As time wore down, Yehezkel who had been active for the whole half, had a wonderful chance in the box but his opportunity was just tipped away to safety by Zobas.

Second Half
Micha sent the first warning shot of the second half as his chance was scooped up by Zobas as Maccabi looked to get onto the board early on. Dasa had an opportunity on the 58th minute but he missed the mark while in the 62nd minute Nosa Igiebor was introduced in place of Eliel Peretz.
ad0y1156
Almog Bozaglo led a Bnei Yehuda attack in the 67th minute but the ball just went by the Maccabi goal and out for a corner and two minutes later Yossi Benayoun replaced Gal Alberman. In the 73rd minute Yehezkel again went for the goal but his chance missed the target.

As the match hit the 75th minute, Maccabi made their third and final substitution of the match inserting striker Barak Itzhaki in favor of Omri Ben Harush. However, it would be Bnei Yehuda who would strike first as Almog Bozaglo headed in the first goal of the match giving the hosts a 1:0 lead in the 79th minute.
ad0y1636
Maccabi pressed to find an equalizer but it was not to be as Bnei Yehuda took the victory and the three points. The Yellow & Blue will now prepare for the second leg of Toto Cup Quarterfinal at Kiryat Shemona on Wednesday night as the hold a 3:2 advantage of aggregate following last month’s first leg win at the Netanya Stadium.

Know Your Opponent: Bnei Yehuda

Stadium: Moshava (11,000)

The match will take place at Haberfeld Stadium in Rishon Le’Zion due to the winterization of the Petach Tikva stadium’s pitch.

Coach: Yakov Assayag

Assayag (57) who was one of Israel’s top keepers in the 1980’s & 90’s was the Bnei Yehuda shot stopper for their only league championship in 1988/89. At the beginning of 2000, Assayag joined Bnei Yehuda’s professional staff as the goalkeeping coach for the youth department along with the first team and also made a comeback in the 2000/01 campaign for three matches trying to stave off relegation.
AD0Y4761
He first stood on the sidelines as Bnei Yehuda’s Head Coach along with Hazi Shirazi upon the termination of Nitzan Shirazi z”l in the 2007/08 season. During the same campaign the pair also replaced Eli Cohen with only 8 matches remaining in the season and kept Bnei Yehuda from being relegated with 8 wins in 9 games.

Assayag was named Head Coach this season when the club decided to let go Arik Benado and will remain in the post until a new coach is appointed.

Comings & goings:

Benado along with new owner Barak Ambramov made numerous changes to the squad as veteran keeper Dele Aiyenugba, Dan Mori, Amir Agaev and Pedro Galvan all departed. Even Micki Siroshin who signed with the team over the summer left.
MTA__1425727592_IMG_9741
Some of the players who joined the ranks of the Orange include Dovev Gabbay, Saar Benbenishti, Alon Turgeman and Yonatan Cohen whom Maccabi loaned to the club.

What have we had up until now:

With only 7 points so far this season, Bnei Yehuda finds itself in the relegation zone and have lost two matches in a row under Assayag while collecting one point since he was named coach in a 2:2 draw against Beitar Jerusalem.

Up until now Bnei Yehuda have one win along with four draws and five defeats and have already faced Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Toto Cup beating the Yellow & Blue 2:1. In their first league match the Orange drew 1:1 versus Bnei Sakhnin which was followed by a loss to Hapoel Haifa and a draw against Maccabi Haifa. Matchday Four saw Bnei Yehuda pick up their only victory of the campaign defeating Hapoel Kfar Saba. Since then the club has only collected two points in six contests.
