ID Card: Youth Department Coaches

Behind every first team player there’s a youth department where he honed his skills. At the club’s Academy there are plenty of staff who work around the clock to help the players develop into the best players that they can be. Let’s meet some of the coaches

One of the Youth Academy’s goals is to help players grow and develop into players who can contribute and play on the First Team. Behind the scene there are plenty of coaches and staff who work day and night who give their all to the Yellow & Blue youngsters in their quest to be the best that they can be. Let’s meet some of those important people:

Guy Tzarfati
Coach: Under-19
Years as football coach: 5 years
Why did you decide to become a coach: “The love of the game”
Number of seasons a coach with the club: 2nd season
What are your thoughts about the changes in the Youth Department? The new philosophy and the use of technology: “Professionalism, modernization and the ability to improve the players.”
What do you think is the most important thing to impart in young players in order for them to develop into professionals? “A strong mentality and the ability to cope with both success and difficulties, thinking during the match.”
How do you work on improving both yourself and your training ability? “I’m always trying to learn more and more within the framework that I’m in.”

Is there a player that trained under you who has succeeded in Israeli football? “Or Dasa took a huge step this year. I hope that he will continue on the same path and become a part of Maccabi’s First Team.”
Role Model: “I don’t have one, I try to take a little from everyone”
Favorite club in the world: “Maccabi of course.”
Unforgettable match: “7:0 over Beitar Jerusalem at Bloomfield.”
Something that we don’t know that’s unrelated to football: “I really like to be at home and on an off day I enjoy just walking around Dizengoff, my Tel Aviv childhood. I really love walking around the city.”
Where do you see yourself in 10 years: “I want to remain in the Maccabi system for many years and create a history in the area of coaching, just like I did as a player.”

Alon Peleg
Coach: Under-14 North
Years as football coach: 7 years (all at Maccabi)
Why did you decide to become a coach: “The passion for football and working with children and youth.”
What are your thoughts about the changes in the Youth Department? The new philosophy and the use of technology: “It’s a welcome change and congratulations to the people who pushed to make that move. When we go to continuing education seminars in Europe, we are beginning to see things that are similar to our Youth Department at Maccabi and that helps us continue to improve and move another step forward in developing better younger players and a higher level of football culture.”
What do you think is the most important thing to impart in young players in order for them to develop into professionals? “The pace of play os much higher than in the past and that’s the first thing a young player needs to adapt to which is thinking and reacting quickly which could be a very big advantage. There also needs to be a good defensive basis and tactical understanding. But most importantly we have to imbue professionalism as we can’t afford to lose a talented youngster due to a lack of professionalism.”
How do you work on improving both yourself and your training ability? “In my spare time I am still working on the pitch via the internet. I am always looking to read more about modern football and watch how other coaches dissect certain situations on YouTube. In addition, I enjoy learning form the Youth Department’s new professional staff and to take their experience and tips that they are happy to share with me.”

Is there a player that trained under you who has succeeded in Israeli football? “I’m still young but I believe in the near future I’ll be able to see one or two players with the First Team.”
Role Model: “Pep Guardiola”
Favorite club in the world: “Manchester United.”
Unforgettable match: “Maccabi’s 3:1 win over Maccabi Haifa at Kiryat Eliezer in 1995/96.”
Something that we don’t know that’s unrelated to football: “I recently got married (August 18), I have a degree in business administration and I really enjoy checking out new restaurants and tasting new dishes.”
Where do you see yourself in 10 years: “That’s a tough question because life is so dynamic, but I’d be happy to remain in the football field as a coach, professional director or someone behind the scenes. I invest plenty of time and I believe that this will ve the case as I’m very satisfied doing what I do now.”

Boaz Bracha
Coach: Under-11 South
Years as football coach: 6 years (All at Maccabi)
Why did you decide to become a coach: “The love of the game and the desire to help develop young players, after I ended my career when I was a young player.”
What are your thoughts about the changes in the Youth Department? The new philosophy and the use of technology: “Changes and bringing in new things is always great when you want to continue to advance especially when this helps turn one into a better coach and better players. Every football club or an organized establishment needs to have a philosophy or a certain path in order to monitor and document advancements. I’m happy that they’ve added these tools in order for the coaches to give more and more to the players.”
What do you think is the most important thing to impart in young players in order for them to develop into professionals? “First and foremost is to give them the understanding that being a professional player is their dream and in order to reach that level they have to not only dream but also train at a certain standard and develop professionally from a young age. As well as to be aware that they need to continue to work hard to improve and train themselves in knowing what they need to do better in training and in a match as well as doing things outside of the regular training sessions.”

How do you work on improving both yourself and your training ability? “I’m always learning from more experienced coaches than me in the Youth Department and by asking questions and consulting with the professional staff. I also watch video and analyze matches in order to help me understand where the players need to improve.”
Is there a player that trained under you who has succeeded in Israeli football? “The players I have trained are still young and therefore it will take a number of years to see who will succeed. Four years ago, I was part of the Under-19 training staff where Dor Peretz was one of the players who was able to succeed as a professional.”
Role Model: “I teach the players that everyone of them could be a role model. It begins by taking responsibility for the small details off of the pitch and by being a leader and by handling situations on tiger field of play. From a young age, every player needs to develop leadership skills that will to only be able to help himself but also his club.”
Favorite club in the world: “Juventus.”
Unforgettable match: “2006 World Cup Final between France and Italy.”
Something that we don’t know that’s unrelated to football: “I recently got engaged and will marry my fiancee Neta in the near future.”
Where do you see yourself in 10 years: “To be a First Team coach or coaching in the Under-19 league.”

Maccabi “Shachar” defeats Ashdod 4:0

The Under-19 side defeated Ashdod on Matchday 23 of the Israel Youth Premier League. Eylon Almog, Tomer Altman, William Agada and Mufleh Shalata all scored for the Yellow & Blue

Matchday 23 of the Israel Youth Premier League saw Maccabi “Shachar” Tel Aviv visit SC Ironi Ashdod at the Yud Alef Stadium. The young Yellow & Blue came into the contest in first place even on points with Hapoel Raanana but with a better goal differential and with a match in hand. Ashdod began the day in 5th place and were winless in their last 5 matches.

Maccabi Starting XI: Daniel Peretz, Noam Cohen, Alon Shtrozberg, Fadi Najar, Yoav Hofmayster, Amit Glazer, Tomer Altman, Prince Thomas, Mufleh Shalata, Eylon Almog, William Agada.

First Half
Maccabi opened the match well and had a terrific chance in the 8’ when Agada’s threatened to score in the box but the Ashdod keeper Roie Beigel made an instinctive save. Five minutes later Altman found Almog on the wing who sent a beauty of a cross to Agada who headed the ball right into Beigel’s waiting hands as the contest remained goalless. Beigel again was alert in the 17’ when the Ashdod shot stopper made another save off of an Agada opportunity.

However, in the 26’ Almog found the back of the goal when he finished off a terrific team play. Hofmayster took the ball in Maccabi’s defensive half and sent it to Cohen who handed it off to Agada and then went to Almog who made his way by a defender and put his attempt behind Beigel for a 1:0 lead. Ashdod had their first dangerous chance in the 35’ when Liel Zimro’s opportunity was taken care of Peretz who sent the ball out for a corner.

Just one minute later Maccabi doubled their lead thanks to a Altman and Almog give and go as the former scored from inside the box for a 2:0 advantage. The young Yellow & Blue almost found their 3rd of the half a minute before the break when Shalata’s chance was saved by Beigel as Maccabi took a two goal lead into halftime.

Second Half
The second half began just as the first half ended as Shalata sent a ball into the middle of the box to Thomas who sent a header towards the goal but the Ashdod defense was able to clear the ball off the line.

Maccabi’s hard work paid off in the 62’ when Shalata slotted the ball to Agada who scored from in close for a 3:0 lead and just two minutes later Shalata himself added the club’s 4th goal for a insurmountable lead as the Yellow & Blue took home the 3-points and a 4:0 win.

Maccabi “Oded” Tel Aviv 2:1 Bnei Sakhnin
The Under-17 side remained undefeated with a home win over Bnei Sakhnin. The Yellow & Blue scored a goal in each half while the visitors cut the lead with 20 minutes left in the contest despite a red card to Rave Assayag. The victory increased the U17’s lead a top the table to 17 points thanks to goal scorers Rave Assayag and Omri Ram. Head Coach Eliezer Ben Anton summed up the win: “We pretty much controlled the pace of play over the whole match. Over the last few minutes we were lucky not to give up a tying goal. Sakhnin played with ten men on the 16 meter line which makes it very difficult to play a fast paced game. I think in these types of cases, patience is very important and today we weren’t patient enough. I’m happy with the win and that we increased our lead at the top of the table, but it’s hard to keep the intensity of the players at the highest levels when there is such a big gap and this is where we get into the mental side of the game. We have to create more goals for the season such as remaining undefeated until the end of the campaign and to continue to increase our first place lead. These are goals that we want to achieve over the matches we have until the end of the season. I want to also wish good luck to the U17 National Team that will be playing in the Elite stage especially to our players that will be heading out for the competition over the next 10 days. We return to action on April 4th with a big game against Maccabi Haifa with the mission to record another win.”

Hapoel Rishon Le’Zion 1:4 Maccabi “Eli Fuchs” Tel Aviv
After last Matchday’s big win where the side scored 11 goals, the Under-16 team continued with their fine play. The young Yellow & Blue took care of Rishon away which helped them move into 4th place, just 6 points off the top of the table. Tal Turgeman, Nehorai Bitton x2 and Yonatan Imberg all scored. Head Coach Raymond Atteveld looked back at the win: “We played a good match and we led by two goals but instead of pressing on the gas and getting a third to finish the game off, we gave up a goal which allowed Rishon to feel that they could get back into the contest. We made a number of substitutions and that helped get us back into the game. We controlled the pace of play for the most part, but we didn’t convert enough of our chances. Despite that, we are the team that leads the league in scoring and I hope we can continue that way, take advantage of more of our opportunities and not put it into our heads that we are scoring a lot of goals. We have to be serious and score when we have the chance to. One thing that we learned last week was how to really continuously pressure our opponent on the pitch. This was a good result against one of our rivals, I’m happy about that.”

Maccabi “Eldad” Tel Aviv 7:0 Ironi Kiryat Gat
After their important win over Maccabi Haifa last week in State Cup action, the Under-15 South team again put up a quality performance on Matchday 22 against Ironi Kiryat Gat. The young Yellow & Blue are in 2nd place just one point off the top of the table. Goal scorers included Ener Oshmandi and Liel Shota with braces, Elad Kaplan, Ohad Mizrachi and Rotem Grama. Head Coach Ori David discussed the win: “We played versus a side that wanted to defend but an easy goal opened up the game and turned the contest into an easy victory. The players did their jobs and I’m proud of that.”

Maccabi “Max” Haifa 4:0 Maccabi “Ilan” Tel Aviv
After moving onto the semifinal round of the State Cup, the Under-15 North squad we’re stopped cold by the Carmel Greens. The young Yellow & Blue are in 3rd place, 8 points out of first place. Head Coach Asaf Heber summed up the defeat: “This wasn’t one of our better matches. We were still in the game after the first half but we didn’t show up in the second half. We allowed Haifa to control the play, we didn’t press in the midfield, we were naive in our defensive game and we gave out gifts to our opponent. This was not a good day to say the least and we have to forget about the game and continue ahead to our next home match.”

Fifteen minutes later the Yellow & Blue had another opportunity when Cohen sent a through ball to Shalata on the left wing who went by a couple of defenders and Agada’s shot went off a defender to end the threat. In the 40’ Haifa central defender Giorgi Drasila took a long shot but Peretz was in place to make the save as Maccabi took a 1:0 lead into the break.

Second Half
