Eran Zahavi, who scored his 23rd and 24th league goals of the season in Maccabi's victory over Hapoel Beer Sheva on Monday, took the opportunity of his visit yesterday to the Maccabi shop to put things in perspective: "Our improving form is as important as the three points"

A day after Maccabi Tel Aviv's impressive 3-1 victory over nearest title rivals Hapoel Beer Sheva, midfielder Eran Zahavi and striker Barak Itzhaki took time out to visit the official Maccabi shop on Dizengoff St. in the heart of Tel Aviv. There they spent the afternoon mingling with the hundreds of adoring fans who flocked to see them in the hope of seeing some of that Maccabi Tel Aviv stardust rub off on them as well.

In between signing team shirts and posing for "selfies" with the eager Maccabi supporters, Monday night's double scorer Eran Zahavi found time to say a sobering word about the significance of the victory that opened up an eight point gap for Maccabi at the top of the Israeli Premier League table: "We beat Beer Sheva and took three very important points but the title ceremony is still some way off. The other two times we played them this season we also controlled the match but we didn't win and winning's what's important. All told I think we've been showing vastly improving form in our recent outings and that's as important as the three points. We just have to keep it up".

Zahavi also had something to say about his standing in the competition for European football's prestigious "Golden Boot" award. With international stars like Christiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Diego Costa ahead of him in the queue the midfielder admitted: "I won't be getting the "Golden Boot", that's for sure, but I can still do the very best I can for the team, game in game out. Scoring a lot of goals was not one of my targets at the start of the season. What I really wanted to do was help the team and improve as a player and scoring goals is one expression of realising that target. It's nice of course but what's most important is the good season we're having and hopefully we'll carry on that way".
