Glazer: It will be amazing as thousands of fans cheer us on

Maccabi Tel Aviv midfielder Dan Glazer will open a new chapter in his career as he and his teammates take to the pitch for the first time at the rebuilt Bloomfield Stadium when they host Bnei Yehuda on Sunday at 20:15.

“I didn’t play much at the old Bloomfield Stadium but I don’t need to remind how the venue has energised us in the past,” Glazer said in the pre-match news conference on Thursday. “We have had a tour of the stadium and all the players left with a feeling of great excitement. We are thrilled to imagine what it will be like when there will be 29,000 fans cheering for us. We really need to win our first game at the stadium.”

Bnei Yehuda will pose a formidable challenge, Glazer said. “This will be a tough test against stubborn opposition. The coaching staff will ensure we are prepared in the best possible way and I hope that we will be the dominant team. Bnei Yehuda are always strong opponents and they must never be under estimated. They played well in Europe, apart from their last game, and we expect a very tough test against a side that knows how to defend and mount counter attacks.”

Maccabi’s European disappointment had an effect, but the team has put that behind them, Glazer said. “It is undeniable that we failed in Europe and we felt bad for a few days, but the good thing about soccer is that there is always another match to look forward to and we can switch our focus. Since the loss (to Suduva) we have won twice and we opened the league season well. We need to look forward to the challenges that lie ahead and ensure we retain our title.”

Maccabi’s players are all geared up for the season, he said. “Our dressing room is amazing, we have been together for over a year. There are good people and great friends in there, both on the pitch and off it. We help and support each other when things get tough and long may it continue.”

Micha: I hope the floodgates have opened for me

Dor Micha opened his account in the new league season with a cracking strike, Maccabi’s first league goal of the season, in their 2-0 win over Ness Ziona on Saturday and gave his perspective of what happened in the match.

“I don’t think we did as much as we could but we had good passages of play. If we take the good parts of the game, we will do fine,” the midfielder said.

“We need to concentrate on the task ahead. The European campaign for this season is now behind us and we will devote all our efforts to repeat our great success last season,” Micha added.

He was particularly satisfied with his goal: “I don’t recall the last time I scored a goal like that. I hope it will open the flood gates for many more.”

Maccabi off to flying start, beat Ness Ziona 2:0

Maccabi Tel Aviv got off to a flying start in the TASE Premier League on Saturday with a comfortable 2-0 win over newcomers Ness Ziona.

Two first half goals, a powerful strike by Dor Micha in the 22nd minute and a penalty by Eliran Atar six minutes later sealed the points for the visitors.

The match opened at a fast pace with both sides showing excitement at the start of a new campaign but Ness Ziona, who were the underdogs, were immediately on the back foot as Maccabi dominated possession and laid siege to the home team’s goal.

Micha converted the dominance into an advantage with a thunderous right-foot volley from the edge of the area after latching on to a cross from the right by Dan Glazer which gave Ness Ziona goalkeeper Omri Glazer no chance.

Maccabi continued to pile on the pressure and were soon rewarded with a penalty that was only confirmed by referee Daniel Bar Natan after a VAR review. Eliran Atar buried the spot kick in the 28th minute with ‘keeper Glazer again stranded.

Additional attempts on goal were unsuccessful, including a powerful shot by Dor Peretz that was parried by the Ness Ziona ‘keeper.

The pace of the second half was far calmer despite further attempts by Maccabi to increase the score, including another powerful strike by Micha, which rebounded off the right post. Peretz also put the ball in the back of the net but it was from a clear offside position.

Ness Ziona’s first outing in the top flight after 51 years was an eye opener for them and they never got close to threatening the defending champions.

Youth team draw 2:2 with Beersheba

Maccabi Shahar Tel Aviv, the club’s youth team, opened their league campaign on Saturday at their new home ground in Ness Ziona and came back from a goal down to register a 2-2 draw. It was an inaugural appearance for coach Eliezer Ben Aharon who picked Omri Ram, Shai Balahssen and Raveh Assayag as his frontline players.

Maccabi opened strongly and Balahssen got the hosts off to a great start with a shot from the edge of the area in the fifth minute that left Beersheba’s goalkeeper no chance.

A subsequent attack, as Maccabi showed their dominance was thwarted by the Beersheba defence and the visitors managed to equalise in the 12th minute when Ilai Ben-Shitrit equalised from close range. Rom Elyagon almost made it 2-1 to Beersheba when he lobbed Or Yitzhak in Maccabi’s goal, but his shot bounced off the crossbar.

Maccabi dominated the first part of the second half but Beersheba went ahead against the run of play on the hour when Roei Avitan latched on to a cross from the left and shot diagonally to the right to make it 2-1 to the visitors.

Omri Ram restored parity in the 62nd minute when Beersheba goalkeeper failed to clear a shot from left back Shahar Rosen and Omri Ram connected with the rebound and rolled the ball home to seal a draw.

Nir Berkovich almost gave Maccabi the three points but his shot at goal in the 73rd minute rebounded off both uprights before being cleared by the Beersheba defence. Further attempts at goal were fruitless.

Maccabi’s lineup: Or Yitzhak; Guy Mizrahi, Dan Lugasi, Omer Itzhaki, Shahar Rosen; Nir Berkovich, Shai Balahssen (Nadav Nidam, 46), Rotem Yatzker, Raveh Assayag (Tal Turgeman, 81), Shaked Navon (Yahli Lazar, 60); Omri Ram.
