Rikan: With a man down it’s natural to be more defensive

Midfielder Avi Rikan spoke to reporters after the goalless draw with Bnei Yehuda in Maccabi Tel Aviv’s first game back at the new Bloomfield stadium as hosts, he said the team would have to work harder in order to re-create last season’s excellent showing, but has no doubt that things will get back on track.

“Of course, the game changed after we went a man down but I think, still, we could have shown a bit more quality. It’s only natural that when you lose a player, you become more defensive as there were necessary changes (in the lineup).

“We really wanted to open our season at the new Bloomfield with a win, we only got a point but we’ll take the good things from this game and will carry on our quest.

“We didn’t start well, we know we need to look better than we did and I’m certain that it will happen as we progress. Sometimes this is a result of not yet being match fit combined with a few injury niggles, but I’m certain that with time we will gel.

“We have a short break now (during the national team’s matches) and I hope it will allow us to regroup and perhaps some injured players will return.

“Last season we began a little apprehensively but with time things fell into place and we were great. This time, there is an expectation for things to get off to a flying start, but it takes time but this is a different season, with different challenges. The players will have to work much harder this season to recreate the success from last year.

“It’s great to see Bloomfield swathed in yellow, unfortunately we sent the fans home with only a point but I’m sure that during the season we will make them happy in this stunning stadium.”

Glazer: It was thrilling to be back at Bloomfield

Dan Glazer and Maccabi Tel Aviv stepped onto the Bloomfield turf on Sunday but the side ended their much-awaited TASE Premier League clash with Bnei Yehuda in a frustrating goalless draw. This was the midfielder’s perspective.

“It was thrilling to be back at Bloomfield, this was a memorable experience” Glazer said.

“We always want to win every game we play, especially on this special occasion on our return to the new stadium. We wanted to make the crowd happy after they supported us from the kickoff but we are disappointed that we weren’t able to do so, although we will persevere,” he insisted. “I think we are working hard in training, we are only at the start of the season but today we showed that we are a tough team even after being left a player short. There are matches in which it is important not to lose, particularly when the circumstances dictate a difficult situation but I am certain that the coaching staff will ensure that we will look better as the season continues,” Glazer said.

He vowed to continue to work on his own game: “I need to see the recording of my own performance to see where I need to improve. Certainly, I need to work more on the attacking aspects of my game.”

Bnei Yehuda hold 10-man Maccabi to goalless draw on Bloomfield return

Maccabi Tel Aviv played out a frustrating goalless draw with city rivals Bnei Yehuda on Sunday in their first home fixture at the new Bloomfield Stadium.

Maccabi played the whole of the second half with ten men after Dor Peretz was shown a second yellow card in the 45th minute. A host of fouls and infringements, with seven other players being shown yellow cards, never allowed the game to develop into a free-flowing contest as with both defences worked hard to close down their rivals’ attacking moves on a sticky night.

Maccabi went into the match with great anticipation and fans voted with their feet, as 26,513 turned out to watch at the impressive new stadium which the club still hopes will be a fortress and will inspire continued success.

Referee Roei Rheinschreiber awarded Maccabi a penalty in the 33rd minute after Peretz appeared to be brought down in the area by Bnei Yehuda goalkeeper Emilios Zobas but after consulting the VAR system he overturned the decision and Peretz was shown the yellow card instead of Zobas.

Maccabi were saved in the 45th minute when a scissors kick by Bnei Yehuda’s Mohammed Gadir hit the right post. At the start of the second half, coach Vladimir Ivic substituted Dor Micha and Eliran Atar with Avi Rikan and Chico Ofuedo to restore some balance to the side. While the ten-man hosts held their own and even threatened intermittently, effective last-gasp defensive efforts by Bnei Yehuda, coupled with poor last passes or sloppy finishing ensured that no goals would be scored and the festive Bloomfield evening ended without the glory of a win.

Maccabi “Shachar” share points with Hapoel Ramat Gan

Maccabi Tel Aviv’s youth team registered their second draw in succession in the youth Premier League on Saturday after a 1-1 result away to Hapoel Ramat Gan. That followed the 2-2 home draw on the opening day of the season a week earlier, at home to Hapoel Beersheba.

Coach Eliezer Ben Aharon made one change to the previous Saturday’s opening lineup by introducing Nadav Nidam in attack in place of Rotem Yatzker, a change that was to prove vital.

Maccabi were all dominant from the start and had at least three good chances to take the lead before Nidam put the visitors into the lead in the 27th minute when he latched onto a pass from Omri Ram and shot diagonally into the back of the net from close range.

Ramat Gan almost managed to equalise four minutes later when a shot by Chauncy Freeman rebounded off the crossbar, and in the 38th, Maccabi were left ruing another missed opportunity when Shaked Navon narrowly missed the target.

The second half was still very much dominated by the visitors, who had at least three more good chances to find the net, but their misses cost them the three points when Freeman equalised in the 89th minute against the run of play with a well taken header.

Maccabi’s lineup: Or Yitzhak; Guy Mizrahi, Dan Lugasi, Omer Yitzhaki, Shahar Rosen; Niv Berkovitz, Shai Balahsan (Or Reisman, 57), Nadav Nidam (Afek Sapir Navot, 65); Raveh Assayag (Tal Turgeman, 74) Shaked Navon (Fafara Guyagon, 46), Omri Ram.

Parfait Guiagon named in U19’s squad to face Hapoel Ramat Gan

Parfait Guiagon joined Maccabi on a one-season-long loan-spell after an agreement was reached with his Club Omnisport Rigo-Dadie.
The 18-year-old Ivory Coast midfielder who is a member of his country’s U-23 national side, impressed Maccabi’s academy staff during a trial period which could also lead to him making the move permanent.

Maccabi Tel Aviv’s Performance Director, Patrick van Leeuwen, told the club’s official website: “Parfait was one of several Ivory Coast players who had a trial period at the club at the end of last season and left a good impression. He is a very skillful player who can play in various positions across the midfield and should be a good addition to the attacking qualities we already have in our team”.
