Netanya scored in the opening minute due to our mistake. We got back into the contest and scored some gorgeous goals by the half and took the lead. We scored another goal at the beginning of the second half which for all intents and purposes finished off the game as Netanya stopped believing and then we scored two more goals. People are asking us what are we playing for at this point? You won the championship so where is the motivation coming from? Our answer is that we are trying to turn the season into something extra special. Our lead is sitting at 18 points from second place Maccabi Haifa. We want to continue on. We are now going on a National Team break and will return to play on May 16th against Kiryat Shemona and our goal will be to continue to play quality football. I want to wish good luck to the National Team players who are heading to the tournament in England. We have 5 players who will be representing Israel.”

Rikan: “We have to continue on, there are important matches ahead”

Avi Rikan, the Yellow & Blue midfielder looked back at Maccabi Tel Aviv’s 2:2 draw against Hapoel Haifa at Sammy Ofer Stadium:

“Of course it’s a big disappointment as we already saw the end of the match and the chance to take home the three points. But you have to play 90+ minutes and we came up short over the last few minutes. Despite the disappointment and pain after the match we have to lift ourselves up all together, work hard as we have a number of games left in the season which we have to win.”

Defending against Hapoel Haifa:
“We played Hapoel Haifa a number of times this season and we were aggressive along with controlling the majority of the game. But Hapoel Haifa have shown they play to the final whistle especially versus us and we were down to ten men and we had to all defend against long balls and the like. We’ll pull ourselves together, look at where we erred and contonie on as we have important matches ahead that we need to win.”

Battling for a place in Europe:
“Every match in the Championship Playoffs will be a battle for a European spot and every one will be important. If we would have won today we would have taken a huge step in securing the European spot and third place. We have our goals as do all the other teams and I believe that we will reach them.”

“Giving up the lead in 3 minutes should never happen”

Omer Atzily scored via penalty in the 47’ for the contest’s first goal and his 3rd in as many games as it looked like Maccabi was on their way to victory. However, drama would ensue as the match ended in a shocking 2:2 draw with Hapoel Haifa scoring two late goals.

“We are leading 2:0 and we’re about to win the game. But this was in essence a short summary of our season. We blew it again. Giving up the lead in 3 minutes should never happen.”

More about the final few minutes:
“I wasn’t on the pitch when Haifa drew even. We had a feeling that we were on our way to the win, but then we gave up a goal that cut the lead and we retreated and gave up the tying goal. That should never ever happen and it can’t be that this has happened to us time and time again.”

The battle for Europe:
“I don’t see a situation where we won’t be in Europe. We will do the maximum to make sure we are. Next week we have a match that is a direct battle for the European spot against Netanya. Right now we have to deal with our situation and then we will worry about all the rest.”

Cruyff: “This is the story of our season”

Jordi Cruyff, the Yellow & Blue Head Coach summed up his side’s disappointing 2:2 draw at Hapoel Haifa on Matchday 32 of the Israel Premier League Ligat Ha’Al”

“This is the story of our season. Very arguable second yellow card, knowing that Aaron (Schoenfeld) is a guy that goes for the ball. The Haifa player goes down and we lose it. For me it;s unbelievable. It’s part of who we are this season at deb key moments when you have it in your hands you let it go.”

Substitutions:
“It was 2:0 and we had some players with muscular problems and we made the substitutions that we needed to to refresh. Unfortunately they scored two goals from really nothing which is unbelievable and unacceptable from our part. We had it in our hands and let it go.”

Eitan Tibi coming on in place of Babin:
“I expect the players to be ready very quick especially when Babin was injured and asking for a substitution. I expect him to be ready much quicker as the team needed to defend the 2:0 lead and I expect the players to be ready on the bench to come on.”

More on the substitution:
“I turned around and told him him a few times to come on that we had an injured player and we weren’t going to play with ten men. It took a little bit longer than I wished and it’s the least important thing in the game after this result.”

Battling for the European spot:
“It’s hard for all the teams who are fighting for this place and we could have made a huge step today in the right direction to secure it and the that third spot a bit stronger but we let it escape once more this season.”

Maccabi and Hapoel Haifa draw 2:2

The Yellow & Blue took a point in a 2:2 draw against Hapoel Haifa at Sammy Ofer Stadium on Matchday 32 of the Israel Premier League Ligat Ha’Al. Omer Atzily opened the scoring on a penalty that was drawn by Aaron Schoenfeld while the American striker sent a beauty of a pass to Blackman to give Maccabi Tel Aviv a 2:0 lead in the 81’. However, Ben Basat scored a brace with his first goal coming in the 88’ and his second in the 93’ to split the points. Schoenfeld was issued a second yellow card in the 89’ leading to a red card and leaving Cruyff’s side with 10 men over the last few minutes of the contest.

Jordi Cruyff’s Starting XI featured Predrag Rajikovic in goal along with Yuval Shpungin, Tal Ben Haim, Jean-Sylvain Babin, Ofir Davidzada, Eyal Golasa, Avi Rikan, Dor Micha (C), Omer Atzily, Nick Blackman and Aaron Schoenfeld.

Available on the bench were keeper Daniel Tenenbaum, Prince Thomas, Tomer Altman, Vodar Kjartansson, Eitan Tibi, Elian Atar and Gidi Kanuk.

First Half
Haifa’s Eden Ben Basat had the contest’s first chance when he made his way past the defensive line, but Babin quelled the threat in the 5’ while three minutes later, Ben Basat tried to head the ball in off a Vermouth corner but his attempt was taken care of by the Maccabi defense. Rikan had the Yellow & Blue’s opening opportunity when he took a long distance shot from 20 meters off a counter but his chance missed the target in the 9’.

Rikan again was in the thick of the action when he took a shot off a short corner in the 13’ that hit the outside netting of the goal while three minutes later #22 tried his luck from far out to no avail. After close to twenty minutes of primarily midfield play, Schoenfeld was issued a yellow card in the 31’ while just a minute later Davidzada cleared a threat in the Maccabi box.

In the 35’ Nisto Mitrevski attempt went over the bar and three minutes later Maccabi had a good chance when Golasa sent the ball to Blackman, but the Englishman was a step too slow to get to the ball in time. Golasa then sent Blackman a gorgeous through ball but the winger couldn’t get a good shot off as the half ended goalless.

Second Half
The second half opened with a bang as Schoenfeld was pulled down in the box by Gabriel Tamas and the Yellow & Blue were awarded a penalty that Atzily promptly converted for his 3rd goal in as many games giving Maccabi a 1:0 lead. Schoenfeld then took a shot from the top of the box in the 50’ but his attempt missed the target while three minutes later Micha sent the ball to Rikan in the box but his chance went wide of the goal.

Babin almost doubled the Maccabi lead but his header was smartly saved by Ernestas Setkus, the Lithuanian National Team keeper in the 60’ and four minutes later Setkus made an amazing leading stop to deny Atzily sending the ball out for a corner. Maxim Plakuschenko took a chance form distance but his ball couldn’t find the intended target in the 65’ and Golasa did the same at the other end of the pitch which had the same result.

Cruyff made his first substitution in the 74’ when he inserted Gidi Kanuk in favor of goal scorer Atzily. and 2 minutes later Rikan picked up a yellow card. Turgeman almost drew Haifa even off a free kick that he headed just inches over the bar in the 77’ while Golasa’s attempt at the Haifa goal was saved by Setkus.

Maccabi found their second goal of the night when Schoenfeld sent a beauty of a pass from the left wing to Blackman who slotted the ball behind Setkus to give the Yellow & Blue a 2:0 lead in the 81’. Eitan Tibi entered the contest in favor of Babin following the goal and Eliran Atar came on for Micha in the 86’.

With Maccabi looking to wrap up the victory, Ben Basat took a Plakuschenko pass and put the ball behind Rajikovic in the 88’ to cut the Yellow & Blue advantage to 2:1. A minute later Schoenfeld was handed his second yellow card and was sent off leaving Maccabi with 10 men for the balance of the match. Plakuschenko tried to even the contest up by himself with a scorcher from 20 meters that Rajikovic was able to parry to safety but just a minute later the same Plakuschenko sent a brilliant pass to Ben Basat in the box that the striker headed behind the Maccabi shot stopper to draw Haifa even as the contest ended in a 2:2 draw with the side’s splitting the points.

Final Preparations: Heading to Sammy Ofer for the last time this season

After defeating Bnei Yehuda 2:0 last week, Jordi Cruyff will head to the Carmel with a number of players unavailable. Cristian Battocchio who was injured in the Bnei Yehuda match, Dor Peretz (yellow card accumulation), Barak Itzhaki (suspension) won’t be in the squad while Sheran Yeini is still recovering from his injury. Maccabi will look to pick up the win and inch closer to securing a Europa League qualification slot for next season.

“This wasn’t planned and it’s not pleasant that we are in this situation, but the players have something to battle for. The ticket to Europe is very important and the players are professionals who want to prove themselves for their own future as well,” Cruyff said at the pre-match press conference.

Defender Ofir Davidzada added, “In league play, a big club like Maccabi has to look good in every match and come into each game to win. We want to battle, look good and show everyone that we are Maccabi Tel Aviv.”
